I am currently fostering a Great Dane named Drew, He started limping and his owner was going to shoot him, I love him but i dont have the time and money to spend on him that he deserves. Drew is about 8 months old and is having a problem with one of the bones in his back left leg. My vet is attempting to cure the problem by putting him on medication, he told me if this medicine was going to work i would see a big difference in less than 10 days, but if it doesnt work we are looking at amputation. The vet is trying to avoid the amputation because of the size of the dog, but from what i seen the growth plate in the leg has been destroyed so i am not sure it wouldnt be better in the long run if he got it removed. Drew is in need of a home, a home that can afford to take care of him and a pawrent that can understand how to care for him if it comes down to amputation. Other than this leg there is nothing i have found wrong with him he is great with other animals other dogs and kids and is going to make someone a very loving dog. I have rehomed a lot of dogs before this, but I dont want him going to just anyone someone with experience would be best, If any of you can help Drew or if you know some who can will you please contact me, chasenthunder@gmail.com

Aww! What a sweet sounding boy. I hope he finds a great home.
Someone remind me, what year are we in? Who the hell shoots their dogs anymore!???? So frickin' inhumane!

Ohhhh, Drew, your story is so much like Gerry's! Also a case of a growth plate being too damaged that led to his amputation, I was told. Not to mention that even though Gerry is probably a dobe mixed with something smaller, he believes himself to be part Great Dane. (He will occassionally plop his butt down in my lap, and does a lot of head butting, which I've seen/heard Great Danes enjoy doing as well).
Wish I could take that sweet big boy in too, but I couldn't give him what he needs, with my little house and little savings account. However, if you hear from anyone near or north of Madison, WI, perhaps I could help transport him? I'd love to help, if there's anything I can do. Gerry and I will keep our eyes and ears open for suitable pawrents for him too. My neighbor has told me about a guy she met somewhere around here who makes a point of only adopting three-legged dogs, (shocking that I don't know him yet, isn't it?) but she noted he has two currently, so he likely doesn't have room currently either. Maybe somebody will walk into the Humane Society while I'm there looking for a Great Dane and I can tell them about all the joys of having a tripawd Great Dane.
Paws crossed for Drew!!!
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

if that is gerry on your picture, he looks almost like a dane doberman mix, is he that big? and thank you for your offer i will keep that in mind.... i could send drew to a dane rescue but i feel like he would be better off if i keep him until i find him a home rather than send him to a rescue first....
thanks everyone for your comments its much appreciated
That is Gerry, but he's not big enough by half - barely 50 lbs. He also tries to convince me he's a Husky. He won't leave them alone at dog parks, always must play with them (sometimes to his peril), and he pulls like a sled dog on his ruffwear harness - but who doesn't?
Are you thinking about distributing posters? I could definitely get some put up around here, some pet stores will, libraries and there's a bulletin board at my work that already has posters advertising for cats that need new homes. Don't want to rush you - I know you want to enjoy the time you have fostering him, but the wider the pool the better the chance of finding someone worthy enough of him. I'll send you a PM about this soon. No pressure. I just have had occasion to distribute a lot of posters over the years, so it's always the first solution I think of to a problem - haha!

We are working on walking, it turned off rainy hear today so he was a little more sore than normal but we are up to about a half mile walk every day and his meds went from being 150 a week to 40 a week because the vet took him off some things that he should not need anymore, I still have yet to find anyone willing to take him in, mostly because he is so big, but he is a charmer and i just adore him. i now have to tie all my gates shut because he has figured out how to bite them just right to get them open(altho he only did this when i was outside the fience but i had to stop him cause the road is so close) he is gaining weight and eating good and the back muscle on his good leg is just about back to its original size. the muscle on his injured leg is still quit small but when we walk he puts weight on the leg for about a half rotation so we are working on building that up too.... He has the potential to be a very beautiful boy, and despite the lack of nutrition he was givin as a puppy his bones seem to be growing great 🙂
I am so proud of him, I just love him to death.

Awww, I just wish you would get some awesome good luck and be able to keep him. I'm still thinking up all the dog lovers I've evern known and asking them to continue to spread the word and keep eyes and ears peeled for big dog lovers especially. Also got some posters up around down. I'll keep chippin' away at that effort. Best of luck!
And good boy, Drew! Way to go!!!

got some not-so-good news today on drew, I have to go talk to my vet in person tomorrow but he called me today and he is starting to think that he isnt getting any better, we have been at the same point in his walking progress for the past week. He is thinking maybe that jungus has messed up hin knee join to the point that, even tho what i see is him still limping, maybe that is all the joint is ever going to rotate. Im gonna go back and talk to him tomorrow..... someone called me today looking for a dog, Him and his woman work in the factory near here and at different shifts so someone is always home, he has two kids and a fienced in back yard, his last dog was a st.bernard mix. he is unsure about getting one drews age but i am going to be talking to him agian see if i cant change his mind.
