Will you look at this face!?!
I adopted my tripawd from this shelter 6 months ago. I am tempted to go back for this guy, but we are dealing with the aftermath of Fourmile Canyon Fire. Our trail system has been destroyed by the recent wildfire. I'm having a hard enough time getting tripawd #1 outdoors in the burn zone. So, I'd better stay away from the shelter! How about you?
Thanks for posting about Hopalong! To keep others from being confused that maybe it was the dog pictured in your avatar who is available, here he is ...

I love him! He has Sammy eyes, the color and the shape. Oh, I just want to squeeze him. I wonder what his personality is? Cattle dogs are incredibly smart! How did he come to be 3 legged??

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us. Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
I get a great feeling about this boy. I wish I could take him myself but my balance wouldn't work here with 3 boys. I WILL contact all of my friends though and see where they are in the scheme of things. He looks like a wonderful boy and would make someone a really happy friend! There are moments in this world when things click, and he looks to me like he would be one in a million kind of dog. It is in his eyes.

Okay, it is confirmed that he is a total sweetie!
I went to visit "hopalong" (which is so clearly not what his name should be) today. He is about 60 lbs, but could stand to lose a few pounds. He has a "labby" face but a curly tail. He is a hoppy boy! He came right over to me and gave me lots of lovin'. He practically sat in my lap. There was lots going on around us- dogs coming and going, cars pulling up, trains going by. He took it all in stride. He was very interested in other dogs and birds. He greeted a small dog that went by with no problem. He is in a kennel with another dog, and they are fine together. He did bark at one big dog that walked by, but aside from that he was quiet. He wagged his tail a lot and ran around some, but he was fairly mellow.
Hopalong was transfered to the Boulder Humane Society from Aztec, NM. This is right next to a large Navajo reservation. The median (family) income of Aztec is below 25,000. Hopalong doesn't have great teeth. He didn't seem to know any commands and he likes to jump up on the windowsills and fence at the shelter. He seems like he definitely could have been a "rez dog". He did seem sweet and smart, and I bet he would learn quickly.
He was a real love-bug cuddler! He would love to hop around someone's back yard. I hope someone snatches him up!

Melissa, thanks for letting us know about him, we put him on the Tripawds Facebook page.
You're right, if a dog has to end up in the shelter, the Boulder one is one of the best in the country! We hope he finds a home soon. Keep us posted with updates and we'll keep trying to get the word out.

So if he was some kind of "rez" dog he probably didn't lose his leg to cancer, that is good! I am also glad he is out of the kill shelter. I am looking into trying to find him some foster care. I don't know how or if I can, but trying isn't going to hurt. Cattle dogs are brilliant, I haven't met one yet that wasn't a dog brainiac, so I bet with a little training he will do well wherever he is.
I am wondering, if I can find someone to foster him for a little while, is there a way we could get him out to the coast?

Just a matter of coordinating a rescue road trip like we did for Miles. Too bad we won't be able to help with this one since we're hitting the road next week.

I have spread the word too, but so far everyone is full and can't take on a dog, especially one who has "special needs".
I want to help him so I will keep on trying. What great pictures! How tall is he and how much does he weigh?
