It was a cold, rainy day so decided to take the kids to visit the local SPCA and give the dogs there some love when I came across Colby.

  • Name and location of animal shelter: Harrisonburg, Rockingham SPCA, http://www.rhspca.org He's not on petfinder yet, but I'll watch for him there too.
  • Age of dog and date of amputation, if known: About 1 year old, birth defects.  Left front leg is 'amputated' at elbow, Right front leg is deformed but usable.  Showed some ability to walk on rear legs only!
  • Breed and sex of dog: Male, Lab/cocker spaniel mix.  About 30-40 pounds full grown.  Black.
  • Cause for amputation, if known: Appears to be birth defects
  • Any special needs (i.e.; diet, medication, mobility, etc.): None known, very skinny.  Was a stray found running on side of road.  He just got released from hold on the 10th.
  • Contact information for further details: http://www.rhspca.org, Can call 540-434-5270.

He was such a cutie!!!  His size is really nice, small but not too small.  He was super sweet, didn't bark at kids and was very comfortable around them.  He jumped and was an active 1 year old like you'd expect!  Everyone at the shelter just melted when I asked about him.

His front right leg was a little deformed as well, seemed small and the shape of the paw wasn't 'right' but it was very useable.  Like I said, he definitely seemed comfortable walking on just his hind legs.

The only negative was that he peed a little when I first got him out and one of the women there said he did that when he was excited, but they thought it might stop when he learned manners or when he was neutered.

He was a really sweetie!  We aren't in the place to adopt him now, but he'd make someone a great pet!!!!  Let me know if I can help any!

Amy

How did he walk on his hind legs alone? Like a human? Or a bunny hop?

Like a human!  It was crazy!  I once saw this video of a dog walking on 2 legs and he was similar, though not as good as the video.  It was only for a short time, but he definitely did it easier than most dogs, it was pretty amazing!
