I updated my avatar after the upgrade but the next time I got on the site it was gone. I went to my dashboard and it looked like it was there; nevertheless, I downloaded a new photo and thought the problem was solved. Nope, the next time, same problem.
Last night I worked on it for an hour or so but couldn't get it to appear at all. Tonight, it didn't show up on the discussion forum although it did appear on the home page. I went to my profile page, where I got a message about uploading a new avatar. I followed the link and, lo and behold, there was my avatar.
I am downloading a jpeg file off my computer and cropping it to fit. I use a Mac. Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? (I have noticed a number of empty frames where other avatars are missing also. I thought they hadn't updated, but perhaps others are having a problem too.)

Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
I can see your avatar! Sorry you spent an hour fussing over it! YIKES!
If for some reason you can't see it im the future or if you change it and can't see the new version, always hit "refresh" to refresh the page. You may have to do it a couple of times. The old browser page may be showing the old page since it is cached on your computer and hitting refresh will show you the update.
A couple of things if you are still having problems. When you upload it, use the "alternative upload" button instead. Don't ask me why, but it's always worked right for me and seems to when others use it too. You won't be able to crop it, so you'll have to do it before uploaded. Also try not to upload a ginormous picture either. Most pics coming direct off a camera are ginormous, so reduce it to a smaller size nor more than 600 pixels wide or so. You can do all of that in any photo program. (usually pre-installed on your computer or with your camera software)
Lastly, sometimes avatar pics of folks are little red "x"'s and don't show up. (usually called a broken link). Circa late 2010 that started happening here. It's very random. A mystery that no one seems to have figured out! Hitting refresh will usually fix it.
Hope that helps!

She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Thanks! I can see his pretty face now ...

Sorry we didn't get to see this disappearing act in action. What do you mean? What was appearing in it's place?
If the old avatar was showing after uploading a new one, it was clearly just an issue of your browser displaying the cached version. Which is what browsers are designed to do.
If a black box appeared instead of the avatar, an invalid file format or size may have been uploaded. In this case, cometdog's suggestion should help.
If something else showed where your avatar should be in these forums, we definitely want to know what happened so we can try to replicate the issue and fix it. There has never been any report of the avatar image disappearing altogether.
NOTE TO ALL: You may notice in various tech support topics that the solution for refreshing your avatar after successful upload is to force reload the page (option cmd refresh on a Mac) or to clear the browser cache, or just wait and it the new image will eventually load.

Thanks for weighing in on this issue. What showed up was a white box with a question mark in it. Sometimes when I went to the site to up load my avatar, the old one appeared there. Sometimes another one that I had uploaded (for consideration) was there and other times the new one I had selected was there. None of them showed on the forum page, but one appeared on the right side of the home page where it says "Welcome Smilin' Sammy."
I am pretty sure that cometdog was right and it was a cache problem. I don't know what she did, but it is fine now.
I guess I assumed that uploading a new photo automatically replaced/refreshed the page. Huh, who knew? I used to do page layout but, I confess, this process confuses me! I haven't quite figured out how to resize the photos so I import them from jpeg files on my computer and crop them. I have iphoto on my mac, but I cannot find a way to reduce the resolution. Macs are great for publishing and graphics, so I am sure there must be some option I am missing. I know Quark XPress, but don't have it on my computer since retirement. Any ideas?
Just in case this avatar problem reappears, I will save your advice.
Thanks!
Beth

Jerry actually wrote some detailed instructions for how to optimize photos for web use o help Tripawds bloggers make the use of free blogs. iPhoto is really much more of a library than an imaging tool. Search the iPhoto Help menu for tips on exporting images at various different sizes.
Hope this helps!
