I just got a new Flip video camera - love it. But the only problem is trying to figure out how to compress the files so they're a lot smaller so I can upload my videos. Some of the movies I've made are over 80 MB! I've contacted Flip and they say I need to get a 3rd party software to compress these files. Since so many blogs have uploaded videos (including the fip) I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or suggestions on what I should do. Another option might be to send it to Youtube, which I've never used, but I'm also not really comfortable with that since it's such a public forum, unless I'm mistaken and you can add private settings so the whole world can't view? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Kami
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
Your best bet is Youtube.
You can change the settings on each video at youtube to where no on can comment on it. When I did a video tribute for my brother who died, it was my first attempt at youtube and I only did it because I had no means of sharing the video. So, I used the privacy feature.
After doing it, I wasn't so concerned about my private videos since there are a gazillion uploaded daily.

Thanks Comet's Mom for the tip! I will try this and see what happens :). So sorry to hear about your brother - must have been a very special video tribute.

You are welcome!
Once you do that, we can show you how to show it on the boards and your blog - it's easy if you don't try to make it complicated like I did at first!

Uploading your movies to YouTube or another video sharing site is the best (and easiest) way to share movies on your blog or here in the forums. As a Tripawds Supporter , you have two ways to easily embed movies:
- All members can now simply include the YouTube video display page url on a line by itself and the movie will automatically embed.
- Supporters can also activate and use the Viper's Video Tags Plugin to easily share videos from numerous video sharing sites.
Regardless, you do not want to upload video files directly to your Tripawds blog. They are more difficult to embed, anything over 10MB will fail, and such large files will quickly consume your upload space quota. With such robust and free video embedding options like YouTube that exist, we feel this is the best way to make use of free and supporter Tripawds blogs .
Hope this helps, to answer your question about compressing movies? Do you run Mac OS or windows. On our Mac we use the bundled iMovie software to produce movies and render them all at "CD Quality" or 320x240 which is fine for online display and saves upload time. For Windoze, review this topic discussing various software solutions for making movies and slideshows. FYI: YouTube will take care of compressing the files for you if you don't want to bother and have the bandwidth to spare. Their max. movie size for upload is 1 GB!

Wow! Both of you thanks so much for all this great information. I actually went onto the link and saw that this topic was extensively written about just recently which was great. Comet's Mom, I couldn't help but view your brother's tribute - it was so beautiful. I can see why it would make it very difficult to put it together and watch. It brought tears to my eyes. Just beautiful. Thank you both again for being so helpful on this. Keeping my paws crossed that I'll be uploading videos very soon! Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

Thank you Kami for lovely comments. It's still hard to realize that it happened so suddenly. He just went to bed one night and died from water on the brain from a malfunctioning shunt he had since a child. He was special person.
He was also the "sweet" one ... My poor mom is now stuck with the "backtalker" one!
For Windoze,
I'm kinda liking my Window 7 now.

I could tell from the video that your brother was very special. I imagine you miss him everyday. What a huge loss....so now your mother is stuck with the backtalker but I bet comedienne fits right in there somewhere too :). Please let Cometdog know how much she makes us laugh! 🙂

Hi Kami,
I got a Flip video camera for Christmas! I love it! I first upload my videos to my YouTube site, which compresses it, and then I post on the blog or forums... I've used their movie maker to make a couple of videos... It's pretty easy... Just takes a little while to get the hang of it! Wish I had it when Jake was still here... Can't wait to see your videos!!!!

Hi Angel Jake's Mom,
I know, isn't it the greatest little gadget?? I absolutely love it. I wish I had gotten it sooner too - so many things I would have taken videos of. I'm glad to hear you got the hang of it on Youtube so definitely will be doing that too.
