Hi Nindri!  My 11 year old 86lb dog was just diagnosed with osteosarcoma.  They told me one of my options is to remove his right hind leg but he only will live for 6-12 months.  I worry about the pain after the initial amputation surgery and I am distraught over the short life expectancy afterwards.  Can you provide some insight?

Hi, sorry to hear about the diagnose. Ami was in pain after the op but she was on good pain medication. She did have phantom pain after as well but it has been well worth it. Just talk to your vet about your concerns and see what they say, might be better to put your mind at rest. And regards of life expectancy, we've had 5 years after amputation :)

Ami
11.04.2002 - 14.02.2014

Our tripawed Ami passed away on friday the 14.2.14. It was over 5 years post amputation (osteo sarcoma) and she was very nearly 12 years. She had gone through so much having had gdv, pyo, pancreatitis and mammary tumors since the amputation. She was such a fighter but on thursday arthritis on her back seem to have got so bad that she could not support her weight and she was already on nearly maximum painrelief so there was not much we could do. This time we could see that there was just no fight left in her to get over this. We had to make a one the most difficult disisions of our lifes to let her go. The vet visited our home next day and she went very quickly and peacefully laying in her bed and eating chicken. She has been so special dog for us and we miss her so much. Hopefully she has given some hope for the others that big dogs can do well on three legs and get over osteo sarcoma.

Thank you so much for your kindness and caring enough to come back here and update this topic as well as posting in Coping with  Loss.

Your compassion, your love for Ami knows no bounds. We are so very, very sorry to hear about her passing but I hope it brings you some comfort knowing that she will always, forever be an inspiration to this entire community. What an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime dog she was.

So sorry for your loss, she was a special dog for having fought through so much and still lived to a good age of ~12. Plus Ami's recovery from osteosarcoma is quite an amazing story, 5 years woot woot! She will be a great story as you say for other large breed dogs that are also facing a similar situation.

XOXO

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog
