Yeah for the oldie but goodies!! Congrats on your Great Dane's progress! Today is the 1 year ampuversary for my Cleo who is 12 years, 10 months old. She was hit by a car. Being a small dog it is a wonder she survived. 2 broken ribs, bruised lung and a de-gloved front leg. We love her to no end and treasure every additional day we have been given with her.

Right at the top of best news ever. 11 yr old Dane and five years post amp? Yowza that is amazing.
As our mutty puppy just kept growing and growing and growing, I fretted about the whole big dog-short life thing. So I tried to ready myself and just enjoy the time we would have. Then when he was 7 and diagnosed with OS (but thankfully with no lung spots), I just hoped that he could see another snow season. Now 14 months later we're looking forward to his favorite season again and he is moving toward 9 yrs old, and still our puppy.
Your post has put a very wide smile on my face. Size and age may matter, but clearly it's in a good way. Happy days.
THIS IS AMAZING!!!! We have Tank who is an almost 6 year old Great Dane and he just celebrated his 4 month ampuversary. I was telling my husband last night that I feel like I have read A TON of stories lately of dogs who have died between the 6 and 9 month mark. This give me such huge amounts of hope... and a reason to quit feeling like this will be Tanks "last" everything this year. I can't tell you how much this had cheered me up!!!!!!!!!
Wow thats amazing our baby is coming up on her 1 year ampuversary I remember out sick I was last year trying to make the right decisión. After some long crying nights my wife and I decided to give her a fighting chance and have her leg removed. She loves life and her next lung xray is Feb 14th, I just hope she wil be around for many years to come. Thanks tanksmom for giving us hope.
Hi Nindri! My 11 year old 86lb dog was just diagnosed with osteosarcoma. They told me one of my options is to remove his right hind leg but he only will live for 6-12 months. I worry about the pain after the initial amputation surgery and I am distraught over the short life expectancy afterwards. Can you provide some insight?

Hi there! I'm sorry I just missed you in the chat. Try to visit later tonight, you'll usually find some folks in there during the evening. Please consider starting a new topic in Presentation and Diagnosis so folks can see your story and help you.
Meanwhile, I'm really sorry to hear about the diagnosis. While 11 isn't young it's also not the oldest dog to ever go through this. Does your vet think he's a good candidate for surgery?
As for the life expectancy, remember that its only humans who count days on a calendar. Dogs have no concept of "time," which is why they know how to live life to the fullest, and make the most of each day. While the standard prognosis of a few months after surgery is shocking, take comfort in knowing that MANY Tripawds outlive that prognosis. Check out this great discussion about time, by another new member who is in the same boat as you. I hope it helps. Keep us posted OK?

We are now 4 months away of 12 years. We said originally after they gave us the 10-12 months survival time that anything over the 10 months will be bonus :). It scares me how close we were not to go through with it. Best of luck with your puppy and we wish him long happy life.

Well done Tank!!!! You keep going boy!! We are 4 months away from 12 years and over 5 years post amputation. We did the hole last of everything for first couple years and then gave up as she just kept suprising us, got to say we have now started to do it again as her mammary tumours are spreading and she is not operable anymore. But we are so grateful for all this amazing extra time that we got with her.

We felt exactly the same at the time and were so close going to other way. Good luck to the next xray! Hopefully you have years as well to spend with your baby.
