If you have a food processor, you can lightly steam or blanch the veggies and then chop them up really small to hide them. Lucy will eat broccoli and Brussels that way but NOT kale!

Oh nice! We can definitely do that! Thanks! And we can do it in the beginning of the week to food prep for the rest of the meals that week! This is why I love this forum - thanks for your help as we navigate this first week here!

Sounds like Sage is ROCKIN' recovery!!! I'm pretty sure that's because her humans are so confident & positive! The picture of her ripping up the pee pads is just so funny. As for the medication, it sounds like what she's on now is working great. I know for Lady there was a lot of tweaking in this first few weeks, but Sage seems to be doing great with what's being given to her. When you go to get the staples out, the vet will likely talk to you about medications moving forward and such.

The veggie thing is a great idea. Sounds like you're doing everything right by her. You just watch, the pounds will fall off fast for her. If only it were so easy for humans!!

Thanks everyone! Good to know that the vet will talk to us again about meds schedules and doses when she gets her staples out. That is already set for Nov 11 - along with her first rehab consult!

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to give a quick update on Sage! She is 2 weeks and 1 day post op. She got her staples out today, had her first round of chemo (so far so good on side effects), and her rehab consult. For now, rehab said she is doing well and they sent us home with helpful stretches, exercises, and massages to give Sage! We can also officially get off the gabapentin today, so I'm hoping that brings the last bit of life back to her as it does tend to make her a little drowsy. We will stay on the anti-inflammatory for now, especially until she sheds some more weight.

She went from 146lb - 130lb, pre-amp to now. Which we are pretty sure accounts for more than just the amputation, given we are working so hard on her diet. (She looks a little leaner to us, but it is hard to tell.) I'm sure now that she is able to move around more, and slowly but surely get a little more exercise, she will burn even more calories and start losing a bit more weight!

The weather has been unseasonably nice here in DC so Sage has been soaking up the sun and the views outside and LOVING IT! She can hop around on her own, pee and poop on her own, and get up and down the few front porch steps all by herself! (She still wears the harness and we still spot her, of course.) I'm sure she will be pumped for her first very short walk today, as she has been itching to get past that gate. We're amazed with her perseverance and at how hard she is trying only two weeks out, and we look forward to continuing to see her progress!

Thanks everyone!

YAY FOR STITCH REMOVAL!!!   AND YAY FOR  BEING FIT AND TRIM!👏👏Such a great ipdate!

Check with your Vet about a step down approach on the Gaba. We usual see a gradual reduction here, but your Vet can  advise you  on that.

We would loooove to see a video of her first outing  beyond the gate!  We know she will be thrilled to go sniff around and pee on lots of spots!

And this picture of Sage is BEAUTIFUL!!! She is so stunning and looks so Regal.

Hugs

WOW! APPLAWSE! APPLAWSE! Sage, you are a role model for getting fit after amputation. I'll bet you feel so much lighter! That is a lot of weight loss, done safely and smartly. We would love to hear more about how you did it. Care to share in Eating Healthy? You can post your weight loss story here

Yes yes yes, more photos and a video of her freedom walk. Congratulations!

Thanks for the tip about the gradual reduction in gabapentin! The vet hadn't mentioned that at first, but when I called back, they indeed told me to cut the dosage in half for now. And yes, I'd love to share Sage's weight loss story! Part of what likely helped is her temporarily reduced appetite, and we are still working out the exact portions of veggies and such, but once I have a concise story to tell I will absolutely share because it seems to be working! I know that reading others' stories helped us!sp_hearticon2

Here is Sage past the gate! I took this video on Friday - so 2 weeks and 3 days post-op. We are only doing quick 3-4 minute walks for now, but that will gradually increase. The harness makes her look a bit heavier than she really is, but without it on she is starting to look much leaner than before! Seems like the rest of the weight she has to loose she is still carrying a bit in her chest and neck. Once that goes, I bet walking around will be even easier! The bandana she is wearing is something a friend made for her during her recovery, as well as a matching one for her beloved cat brother, Puma. I'll share a pic of the two of them here as well!

SUPER SAGE and PAWERFUL PUMA! I love this! Awwww this just made us so hoppy! Look at her GO! She's like "I'm back! Look at meeeeee!"

She really looks fantastic, the weight loss is showing and you are such a good parent for making that happen.

It's a joy to see the Get-a-Grip harness working on her. Mind if we share that with others in the Tripawds Gear blog ?

I hope your weekend is nice and easy just like Sage. Keep it up!
