Wanted to let you know that someone here suggested I contact the local network of shelters/humane societies to see why I could not find the tripawed that was listed on Petfinder. I explained that I had been searching for the dog for a couple of weeks, and was concerned because the foster parent did not return calls or emails. The local humane society JUMPED on it! They immediately checked on the welfare of the animals she was fostering, and to our great relief, it turned out that she had left the country for two weeks, but had someone caring for the animals, just not checking messages.
She is home now and I spoke with her today. She says Barley's injury was suspected from him having been chained, getting caught in his chain, and he chewed his paw off to get free. She sent me photos of the missing paw which were terribly graphic [but, being a nurse, I was interested from a medical standpoint]. Apparently, amputating at the shoulder became the only option because Barley was hobbling on the open bone.
I am planning the trip for next weekend. I hope to bring this boy home.
I agree. Well done for being so persistent.
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
That is wonderful news. Wow-- so pleasing to get answers so soon-- and fingers crossed you have found your boy and can bring him home soon! Keep us updated.
Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
What wonderful news!!! When I suggested that, I had hoped for this outcome for you! The rescue that I volunteered with in NC for many years was always happy to help if we could and I figured you could find someone who felt that way. If someone contacted us about a dog on the euth. list at the shelter in our town because they were interested but couldn't get there in time, we would even go pull the dog (and a few more if we could!) and hold it for the person.
My heart is in rescue and I applaud you for considering not only adoption, but a dog that most people would not commit to. I sincerely wish you the best with the meeting and potential adoption!
Lisa (and Zeus, living proof that shelter dogs rock!!)
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Love Never Ends
I'm so glad it is working out! I just read your post in the rescue forum. I too have had a hard time getting in touch with a rescue; but it is one all of the way up in Canada, so I'm just suspecting that they don't want to adopt to someone in GA. Good luck with Barley! That story is just awful. Hopefully he will work out for you and he can have a happy life!
Jac and Angel Spencer. Spencer was 5.25 years old. He fought a grade 3 fibrosarcoma, started on his shoulder. Left front leg amputated in August 2011. 15 weeks of chemo finished 12/22/11 (mytox and adria). Lung mets found on x-rays 12/28/11. Started carboplatin 1/6/12. Went to Heaven on 2/27/12. I miss him like crazy every day. See his blog here: http://spencer.tripawds.com/
