Our Duke just turned 8 years old and is in really good health except for allergies (under control) and an odd neck sprain last week. Now that he is a senior boy I'm beginning to think about the kinds of things we should be doing to make sure he continues to be mobile, happy and healthy. His amputation was right rear leg and he gets around very well, except he is now a little timid on our hard wood floors but we've put down some non-slip rugs to help him navigate.

What types of things should we do or consider to help make sure Duke's senior years are safe and healthy?

Have you considered having Duke evaluated by a certified rehab vet? There any number of helpful exercises and other protocols (such as laser treatments and acupuncture) that can be accomplished by one of these specialists. Our Murphy was particularly impressed by the fact that he got to go "swimming" in the tank. He considered that to be his own private part of the rehab center. Also check out the Tripawds blogs addressing exercises for strengthening Duke's core muscles.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

That's exactly why we wrote Loving Life On Three Legs !smiley Check it out for lots of professional tips, how to videos, and information about helpful exercises, stretches and massage techniques.

Or, consider taking advantage of the Maggie Moo Fund for Tripawd Rehab to get a free consult with a certified canine rehab vet/tech who can provide an analysis and homework for keeping Duke fit and strong!
