My Callie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma September 2015, she was 7 years old at the time of diagnosis. Callie is a Great Pyrenees and a rescue I had adopted her from Great Pyrenees Rescue of Wisconsin when she was 5 years old so she had only had her forever home for 2 years when she was diagnosed. Prior to being relinquished to the rescue I adopted her from she lived her life at the end of a chain. To say upon hearing the diagnosis I was heart broken would be an understatement.... so many questions go through your mind with this diagnosis.
Callie went through a front limb amputation, 6 iv chemo treatments and 3 months of oral chemo. This months she is 15 months post amputation and diagnosis. I am posting this today to tell those who have just received this diagnosis there is hope and my Callie is proof of that. She has done triple rolls in the snow and what I can only describe to you as snow body surfing. She runs, she barks and she does what all Pyrenees love to do which is guard her family. Within 24 hours of the amputation she was standing up and greeting her vet and with 48 hours of coming home she was back up on her sofa.
Many told me a giant breed could not handle a front limb amputation but I am here to tell you not only does she handle it she ROCKS it! I don't know how much time Callie and I will have but what I do know is that I have been blessed with every moment of the last 15 months with her.
Her last lung x-ray was still clear but I live in the moment with her and treat each one we get as a gift. If you are interested in seeing a video of her playing in the snow message me and I will send you the link. If you have just gotten this diagnosis and what to chat I am here to help however I can. But in this holiday season Callie and I want to send you the message that there is hope, that a giant breed can handle an amputation and that there are options with this diagnosis.
Much love and letting you know that tripawds ROCK! Callie and Cindy
I couldn't get the link to the video to work in this post so just message me if you would like to see it. I took the video of her playing in the snow 3 months post amputation and a couple of days after a chemo session.
Cindy thank you so much for sharing Callie's story. I hope you don't mind but I moved your post here since this spot is really great for inspiring people with giant breed dogs like her. A big congrats on her amazing ampuversary and to you as well, for having such a great attitude! You are BOTH a big inspawration here.
P.S. What format is the video in? I might be able to help. I also hid your email address for you, since it's not a good idea to expose it on the web (spammers love that). But all people need to do to contact you is either use the Private Messaging system here (see the little envelope icon on the top right of your post?), or click on the link and they can email you there. Let me know if I can help.
