Hi all, hopefully some of you will remember me/Wilson, its been quite awhile since ive posted, and hello to all the newcomers !

Just wanted to give a quick update on Wilsy, my going on 13, senior pup, with front leg mid humeral amp ...he is doing great, March 23rd was his 10 month ampuversary, he had this done when he was 11, and he will be 13 in July, i am so happy i made this decision for him, as at the time i wasnt sure, with his age ...but he has sailed thru this like a champ, still acts like a puppy, with same awesome character, and the same zest for life, just gets pooped out from running a little easier. At the rate he's going i wouldnt be surprised if he makes 14-15+, but even if i lost him tomorrow, there would be no regrets, so far we've had 10 extra months, that may not have been.

Thought this might be encouraging for others with seniors, that find themselves needing to make this huge decision. One day when i can find the time, ill try to figure out how to post pics of him, im somewhat computer illiterate, but ill do my best !!!

Take care, and again thanks to all who helped with advice during the recovery period  ....i wish everybody/puppy the best !!!

Wilson of course we remember you! I hope you don't mind I moved your post to "Size and Age Matters." As a gentledog of a certain age, I know your story will inspire others who need hope for their own seniors.

Yay! Congratulations on TEN MONTHS! clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap

You can tell your people they can check out these instructions for adding a photo to forum posts. If they still have challenges just email one to us and we'll be happy to post it for them. We can't wait to see your handsome mugshot!

Thanks for checking in, it's always good to know how our Tripawds members are doing.

What great news....Wilson is so handsome.  Its good to hear he still has his zest for life.  This will be an inspiration to a lot of folks with older dogs and who are having a hard time deciding what to do.  Dogs are so resilient and adjust to life's curve balls so much better than we do.  Glad to hear he is enjoying himself.

Wilson you are showing them you can teach an old dog new tricks and the old dog can teach everyone else a lot! Glad you are doing so well.

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Wilson, you handsome pup!  Way to go!  Keep on rockin' it!!!  We look up to you!  clapclapclap

Was Wilson amp'd b/c of cancer?

~ Katy

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hi Katy, yes, but luckily not bone cancer, he had a mass cell tumor on the top of his foot, had it removed/debulked twice, both times a pretty major surgery, over a period of 5 years or so. The third time it came back it got so bad it was starting to grow in between toes and coming out the bottom of paw, so he would put pressure on it when he walked, besides that it never caused him any pain at all, at first sign of discomfort the 3rd time around, decided with vet that amputation was best case scenario, as it would just keep coming back and skin was already so compromised from prior 2 surgeries, that it would likely not be a good result to remove/debulk again. At time of amp his lungs, and blood work was clear of mets, and have not done any chemo or special meds. I feel very fortunate that his was not an aggressive cancer, although he must have about 8 random lumps and bumps under surface skin, here and there, but vet says as long as they are loose just under surface of skin not to worry, just watch them and if the ones on belly and around rib cage (or anywhere) ever feel like they are becoming connected to anything other than the skin, then perhaps a concern. At this point, and considering his age, we are just enjoying life, so far none of the lumps and bumps have changed except for finding the odd new one pop up, and getting slightly larger, but still nice and loose just under the skin surface, likely a lot of them are just fatty deposits, but you never know, i check them all, every couple days :)

Lypomas!  I guess that's what your vet is talking about.  Yeah, they are unslightly and make for petting kinda a bumpy road, but I understand they don't do anything.  Wilson is one lucky pup!  I bet he LOVES not having those darn tumors continuing to erupt on his paw.  Awwww, dear pup.  Play on today!
