Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
Oh my god, what a couple of weeks.
Still camped out on the floor with her - she would have a good day, a great day, and then cry and not move for a day. No matter how much we rested her, it still kept happening. Sunday was particularly bad.
So we took her in yesterday and were there for THREE HOURS while they did a gazillion tests. Her oncologist was afraid she might have tumors in her spine after all.
But after xrays, they concluded -
She's just an old lady with arthritis.
Which, really is the best possible outcome of all of this. We're so happy.
They've started her on Amantadine - so that, rimadyl (upped that), gabapentin, the metronomic chemo, a multivitamin every other day, artemesenin... not to mention the slew of drugs we have but never used - this dog is starting her own pharmacy!!!
But hopefully we can get her feeling better again. I gave her the amantadine last night and this morning she woke me up, drug me outside, pooped FOUR times, ran back in, demanded breakfast! So hungry! She seemed in great spirits 🙂
(her at the vet yesterday)
Geez! What a crazy time! Soooo glad it is not anything bad!!! Only people here cheer madly when it's a diagnosis of arthritis!!! YAY!!
And Injust realized I often referred to the magnificent ATHLA as Athia!! Anyway, so happy to hear Athla is doing great now!
A d that picture...OMD...SOOOOO CUTE!! PRICELESS!! 🙂
Tha ks for updating us!
Love!

SUPER great news! Here's to being an old lady with "only" arthritis!
She's simply amazing and will continue to be that very special girl who is KICKING BUTT. YAY!

What great news! Sometimes we all get so caught up in cancer we forget there are lots of other, much less serious, things out there - like arthritis and pulled muscles! Glad she is doing well.

I knew it.
I knew it a month ago - I knew it on Monday when they told us it was just arthritis and I knew it at 11:18pm today when my girl was crying, sobbing, suffering in my lap.
I called Blake and told him this was bad - she wasn't ok. He said, "Laura this isn't lung cancer! She'll be fine!"
And I said, "No. No this is the thing that will take her from us."
During xrays Monday, while the bones look fine there's a large circle in the abdominal cavity the drs thought was her bladder. It's not.
It's the size of a melon. It's osteo, but it went to the soft tissues instead of her lungs. Nobody even thought to look there. But, that's in the past, and we did everything we could.
I'm not going to operate. I'm not going radiate. We're going to give the max we can in painkillers and we are going to rent a cabin next weekend and I am going to give her all the foods with sugar I stopped giving her and I'm going to make her chili and curry and banana smoothies and we are going to cuddle and I am going to remind her every minute of time she has left that she is so, so loved and that I have never BEEN loved like she's loved me.
And then I will hire a woman to come to my house and we will let her go.
This is so hard.
This is just devastating, Laura. I am so, so sorry.
Sending love and strength to you as you share this precious, precious time together. I love your plans for the cabin and the spoiling. It is heartbreaking, but it is beautiful too, this celebration of your love. Nothing can ever rob you of that. Your love will live on eternally, of that I am certain.

Oh my ... I can feel the pain in your post... I am so sorry ... a mother always knows. That is what I told myself with Shelby and when they kept sending me home, I knew in my heart something wasn't right.
This is the absolute hardest part of this journey ... I am so sorry. So incredibly sorry. I am so happy you have made some plans before you say goodbye... that will help you in your process (I know it helped me having a plan and doing it).
She is beautiful as always and her star will shine the brightest!
Sending you love and peace in the days to come ...
much love,
alison with spirit shelby in her heart

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
