Hi Everyone,

I came across this forum a week ago and read up on options for our dog Cuddles.

He's had soft tissue sarcoma since before Christmas, and ever since the vet took samples of it it's started to grow exponentially to a point where it's obstructing his ability to walk.

The cancer is soft tissue sarcoma on his hind leg (the oncologist believes it's localized) on his metatarsals, between the tarsal bones and his foot. My guess is the growth is partially caused by infection from him licking it (he's had really bad breath for a long time now)

He's a American Eskimo and some sort of terrier cross, and although he's almost 18 (in June), before the cancer developing he's still been quite aggressive towards strangers trying to touch him aka lots of energy (he's always been like that but if you don't touch him he's super cute)

I've noticed on forums people talk about old dogs getting amputation done and recovering quite nicely, but I haven't noticed anyone mention dogs over the age of 16.

He still looks very sharp (even sharper since we started giving him codeine, my guess is the pain is significantly less when he's on it), drinks a lot of water, but is refusing to eat on his own anymore so we've had to force feed him for the last few days now... I am wondering if this is a sign of him wanting to go. He does have severe inflammation because of his periodontosis.

I am wondering if someone has any experience with ancient dogs like this, and whether we are being selfish even thinking about amputation as I can tell he's in a lot of pain with the tumor, and instead he should be euthanized? Any thoughts or advice would help. Feel free to throw any medical terms at me, I do have a background in biology. Thanks

Cuddles sounds adorable!! And almost 18 yres old!!! 18!!! Spectacular accomplishment!!! What a well loved and cared for dog!! And clearly Cuddles has a lot of spunk!

I really can't offer anything vut love and support. As the Admin Guy mentioned, there have been older dogs who have gotten extended quality time.

I'm glad the lain meds are helping some They coukd be interfering with his feeling like eating. Ask the vet if that's a possibility and maybe he could give you something to coat his tummy.

This is difficult. Is he showing you signs that the aging process is catching up with him? Certainly a likely possibility. The painfu leg doesn't help matters.

Clearly, clearly, clearly you have Cuddles' best interest at heart. You are agonizing over a very hard decision, not because you are selfish, but because you love him and we will all do what is necessary to keep our dogs with us...as long as their quality is good!

All I can say for now is, make the most out of every single moment. The now is all that matters. Let nothing rob you of your time together, Cuddles sure isn't!

When you can, please post some pictures of this adorable feisty senior! We already know he's adorably cute!!

With love

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS. I do recall a small Poodle who was sixteen and had heart issues, as well as needing the dreaded amputation. They did the amputation for pain relief. They enjoyed an additional bonus time of six weeks before the heart issue took its toll. Her humans did NOT regret their decision, even though their extended time was short. Sorry I cannot recall the name so I coukd send you to the post.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Cuddles and family, welcome. We are sorry you're faced with this situation, it's especially tough when you have an older dog. The thing is, age is just a number. Now that our pets have the kind of vet care that can give them an awesome quality of life for longer than ever, age isn't what it used to be. So don't get too hung up on that. Focus on YOUR dog and what he's like, don't compare against others because every dog is different.

I think the Poodle sally is referring to is James the Poodle, who was 17.
