These last two weeks have been really difficult.
We found out 10/25 that our 7 1/2 year old St Bernard - Riza - had an osteosarcoma in her front left leg after taking her to the vet for some pronounced limping that had only been happening for about two days. After a day of thinking about it, my husband and I decided to amputate her leg since they didn't see anything in her lungs and she's only 110lbs (she's always been a skinny, light St Bernard).
It's been really difficult to get our heads wrapped around our situation and we hope we're doing the right thing for her. We talked about it and don't want her to be in pain, but she loves to check the yard for squirrels and lay on the couch while we work during the day - we just want to make sure that she has a quality life as long as she's with us. I'm very nervous about her recovery and her new life on three legs.
I've been reading a lot of forums and blogs on this site for some relief, but I'm so upset and nervous about the surgery.
Hi Becky, Riza and Dad. We are glad you decided to post. Please consider registering as a member so your posts won't need to wait for approval (after the first one).
Well we are sorry you are joining our club, but glad you found us. How can we help? What kinds of questions do you have? As you've probably seen by now, giant breed Tripawds can do really well on three! Riza isn't the biggest Tripawd we've ever had, even for a Saint. Check out Thurston's blog as an example. He's an angel now but he really kicked osteosarcoma's butt for longer than anyone expected!
I'm going to bet that Riza will still be able to do what she loves. Dogs do pretty darn well on three, and once recovery is over you will be so impressed by her bounce-back. Although bigger dogs do take a bit longer to recover than most, they still do it!
