Thanks Karen! I think we'll figure something out. Right now he's so drugged that the hard plastic one is fine. He's not banging into anything as he's pretty much sleeping, snacking and occasionally going potty. He's home and still panting/crying but not nearly as bad as it was yesterday in the hospital. He can hop on his own but we're helping with a sling/towel anyway to prevent him falling on the incision.
Would post pics, but don't know how to do that here!

Well, we made it through the first 3 days home and Rascal is doing great! He doesn't want help getting around, he hates when I try to use a towel as a sling. He was a little wobbly about peeing the first day, but he has no problem with it now. It took us a couple of days to get his pain meds adjusted, but we got it down now. We see a holistic vet tomorrow who does Nutritional Response Testing as well as acupuncture.
I ordered a "Comfy Cone" online as he really has been banging that plastic one into everything now that he's feeling better.
Also been trying different low carb canned foods (EVO, and Blue Buffalo Wilderness). He hates the Budwig diet (cottage cheese/flaxseed oil blended). He gets canned salmon and Hebrew International hot dog bits for treats...and canned pumpkin to try to get his stool softer. It took him 6 days post op to have a bowel movement.
I think I will have to start a blog to post pictures.

YAY Rascal! So glad to hear you are coming along with your recovery. And double YAY for the POOP.
Daisy was the same way with a sling. I tried to use it but she would have none of it. Would.not.budge. Although she is fine with a sling now since I've been using one these past 7 weeks since her knee surgery. Go figure.
It'll take a while for him to rebuild his strength but before you know it he'll be back to his old self.

Sounds good, and poop.......yea! Maggie didn't go until day 6 or 7 either, pain meds can be constipating. I never did need to help Maggie hop, she was also a rear amp. She did not like the feel of anything around her chest or ab area so I don't think she would have been to happy with a sling. The other thing I tried with her was raising her food dish. She looked at me like I was possessed and patiently waited until I put it on the ground where it belonged. She was little, but she had trouble balancing long enough to eat. At the beginning she would sit and rest for a few seconds, then stand and eat again. She never tried to eat sitting or laying down. Stubborn little pug!
I hope Rascal continues to do well, and let us know what the holistic vet has to say. My quad pug Tani has cancer and arthritis and we set up her diet and supplements through a holistic vet that we also see for chiropractic.

Rascal is wearing his new "Comfy Cone"...it's much better. I think he likes it better too. It's still a cone, but it doesn't get caught on things as easily as that plastic one.
We went to the Holistic DVM yesterday for NRT and the initial findings were his liver, adrenals and thyroid were below optimal functioning. The main culprit was showing pesticides. We will get the full report and recommended supplements and what food is best for him tomorrow.
Right now anything I can get him to eat is what he is getting. Blue Buffalo Wilderness canned, EPO canned, sardines, Hebrew International Hot Dogs, cottage cheese and canned pumpkin. First thing in the early am is the worst time to get him to eat which is so NOT him, he used to bark at me to get up at 4 AM because he was hungry. He has always been a good eater. I know part of it is the Tramadol...actually, most of it is the Tramadol! He was still a good eater before surgery even with the broken leg! Post surgery though, we had to up the Tramadol. Anyway, a couple hours after we get up in the AM he is ready to eat, but he's really gotten to like to be hand fed...that's ok. We love him. The other dogs love the hand feeding as they always get a bite of whatever it is!
Just wanted to update our progress. Haven't figured out the blog page yet.

Update! Yesterday was Rascal's 4 month ampuversary! He's doing great eating homemade food (including some raw)and taking lots of supplements and no chemo. We started the Nutritional Response Testing two weeks post surgery and have continued with that since. He's got his old bossy attitude back with the other dogs and he rules the roost mostly from a lying down position, in the biggest doggy bed we have (he is outweighed by either of the other dogs by at least 30#)!! He hates being left at home when I take the other two for a run, but have yet to find a cart/jogger that will work that we can afford. He gets to go for a little walk when I return and it seems to make him happy. Thank-you everyone for all the information and support. I could not have done this without the website!

Rascal made it through his one year ampuversary!!! He's now 15 and a half years young. He's still loving life and has a great appetite. He has a little more trouble getting around, but we have been working on making a comfy sling that he can wear all day, so we can help him whenever he needs it. He is still on lots of anti-cancer supplements, and eats all home made food. He also gets Budwig diet once a day (cottage cheese blended with flaxseed oil). Never did any chemo.
Love and Light,
Jill and Rascal
