Hi all,

I've been thinking about a post asking about how your dog got his/her name.  I sort of forgot, but was reminded when I read Wyatt's blog (sorry admin, I'm stealing).

For the pug girls:

They were bred by my Uncle Paul who was an actor who lived in LA. He named all his pugs after Shakespearean Characters, he used Avoncliff as the breeder name. The girls are sisters from different litters.  Their mom was Cordelia (King Lear), their grandpa was Malvolio (Twelfth Night).  Mag's litter mate brother was Enobarbus (Antony and Cleopatra).

I picked  Maggie's name with defference to my uncle: Avoncliff's Margaret, since there are several Margarets in Shakespeare's plays, and I was POSITIVE that I would name her Molly. The first time I saw her at 10 weeks old I knew she was a Maggie!

Paul named my other pug: Avoncliff's Titania.  Titania is the fairy queen from A Midsummer's Nights Dream.  That is a mouthful for a name, so my mom and I came up with Tani.  I brought Tani home at 10 months old.

Maggie's main nickname is Spud. Why? Well just look at her.  It also helps to know her a little- she is just a spud.   And sometimes I use the collective Spuds when talking about both of them.  I also call Tani monkey dog because she is kind of crazy and throws her body around. And then there are the standard Magster, Tanster, Maggie Mae, Tani Fae.

Of course when they were younger both of them were named 'NO!!', or '#%@# NO!!'.  But with pugs NO is usually followed by some amount of giggling because what ever they are doing is pretty funny.

How cute is that!?

Comet came with hers from the shelter.  It stuck because I was at a loss for names at the time.  I had Mugsy, Snooker and a Dot.  I thought I would never come up with a name for Dot and kept changing it.  (she had black dot on her tongue)  A friend finally bought me something with "Dot" on it and I didn't have a choice.

So, with Comet - I didn't want to think about a name.  I  call her Commie Com or Pumpkin.

Rocket - oh my.   I stole that from another shelter dog's name.  Monkeybutt  - need I explain?

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Cemil came to me as a gift from his Uncle Zeki who passed away very unexpectedly.   Being an Anatolian Shepherd, I thought he needed a Turkish name, and since he was a baby, I got to name him.  Research brought me to Cemil, which means "a good gift", of the kind that you'd give someone as a compliment or to do something nice. I like to think that he was Zeki's gift to me; besides that, he was born just 6 days after my father died, when I really needed something nice.

Cemil and mom Mary, Mujde and Radzi….appreciating and enjoying Today

My husband is from South Dakota and neither of us liked "Dakota" for a dogs name, too hard to say quickly when calling for him, so we shortened it to Koda.  Koda's best friend is our cat Loca - spanish for crazy when referring to a female, and she is pretty crazy!!!  Just ask Koda about when she jumps out at him or chases after his tale.  I love a lot of American city/state names as childrens names also but my husband has band me from them when we have children as he can't stand them....

Oh forgot to mention that Koda's kennel name is Kopafield Pipers Piping.  He is a Christmas Eve baby so the litter got all Christmassy names.

My husband, Joe, and I had a long list of names for our soon to be acquired golden retriever puppy.  I wanted to name him Atticus, after the father in To Kill a Mockingbird.  Joe thought that was dumb...can you believe he never read the book and never saw the movie?  Sheesh.  Anyway, he wanted to name him, Bullet.  I didn't like that one, and if you knew Opie, you would know that he is definitely no bullet.  Opie is slow moving and frankly, kind of lazy.  We came to an agreement that since Opie was a red golden, we should name him something to do with his color.  We explored, Rusty, Red, & the word for red in many languages.  We could come to no agreement.

Then my sister said, "What about Opie?"  (after Sheriff Andy Taylor's kid in The Andy Griffith Show).  Ron Howard played Opie and even though the show was black and white, you could tell that Opie was definitely a red-head.  So, Opie, it was.  His papered name is Alaska's Rufous opus, meaning red work of art.

Nicknames:  Leonardo DaGrinchy Toes (he gets really hairy feet in the winter), Stink Neck (He does a lot of swimming in the river during summer months and the thick fur around his neck takes a long time to dry, allowing bacterial growth, and often smells like a dirty dishrag...pleasant, huh?),  Mr. Licktenschtein, Sir Poopsalot, Goomer, Booter, Best Boy Ever, Myopia, Opie-Os, and Scoot.

Dogs from my past:  Ring (I wanted a ring for my finger when I was nearly five.  My Dad came home after work on my birthday and pulled a little beagle pup out of his coat pocket and said, "Here's your Ring."  Freckles (a beautiful little speckled Brittany Spaniel), Trent (a sled dog reject from an Athabaskan village in Alaska (Fort Yukon), he was a Norwegian Elkhound/G Shepherd mix, Tundra (a pound dog Rhodesian Ridgeback and Rottie mix), Griz, a golden retriever, Zach (Griz's son with the Great Pyrenees girl (Liz) next store, and now my Opie, a golden and my first tripawd.

Karen,

After discussing this at the last NorCal TriPawd gathering, I was wondering when you would be posting this topic. Actually, I touched upon this on an earlier posting.

My first, was a shelter pup that I was able to have for more than 17½ years.  She became part of the family early in December, so she was called Chrissy for the season.

When it came to “The Girls”, I wanted to continue with a name that began with “C” and had a touch of elegance consistent with their line.  (They shared a grandmother with a white Standard Poodle that won Westminster Kennel Club.)  The decision to bring home two at once was made just weeks before bringing them home, again in early December.  The difficulty was to get two names, beginning with “C”, of similar origin, but would allow call/nicknames that could easily be distinct from each other.  The result was Cassiopeia and Cassandra and they would be called Cassy and Sandy.  Full names, Sierra Cassiopeia of AuroFarm, UD and Sierra Cassandra of AuroFarm, UD.

Miss Cherry missed the usual December entry and came in mid January.  In keeping with the Greek Mythology theme, she was named Charites, which is the collective reference to the three Greek Goddesses of Love, Beauty and Vitality.  Boy was that ever fitting for Miss Cherry, which became her call/nickname.  I also would call her “Cherry Tease” since she was a big tease and phonetically it was her name.  Full name, Blue Skies Espree Charites, CDX.

FYI, one does not have to go very far back to realize that “The Girls” and Miss Cherry are related – share a grand or great-grand parent.  (Sperm freezing).

Many of you have heard the story of how we got Emily but for those that haven't here is how she got her name.

We were attending a church out in the country.  One Sunday it is cold and rainy.  There was this little dog that kept jumping on all the cars.  After church two of my sons and  my husand had praise band practice.  My other son found the dog laying under the gas meter shivering, trying to stay warm and dry.  He kept nagging me to go look at this puppy.  Absolutely not, we were not taking this dog home.  After looking at this poor pup several times I called the Hmane Society.  Not open on Sundays.  Okay so we will take her home but I will take her to the Humane Society the next day.  My sons left in one car with the dog.  My husband and I left in another car.  My husband said if there is anyway we were going to keep the dog we better call Bryan because he was calling her Freddie Prinze Jr.    I said no her name is Emily Grace.  Emily just because I love the name and Grace because she came to us from church by the grace of God.

I did actually call the Humane Society because I couldn't imagine anyone abandoning her.  She was such a sweet loving little girl - also wild and in desperate need for training but hey, she was a puppy.

We didn't get enough time with her but I am so grateful for the time we had.  I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Anyway, she didn't really have a nickname except we called her The Girl, (our other dogs are boys)  Princess, or Em, or Gracie, and all kinds of variations of her name.

My other dogs are Bentley, a choc. lab.  We wanted a name that was sophisticated and classy and Marley, a min pin, who is named after Bob Marley.  Only his name is Marley Bob. He has so many nicknames it would take an hour to type them.

Our first dog was Tristan, a black lab, named after the characrtor in All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriott.

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.

OOOO!  What a fun topic!  Everyone has such cute and/or interesting ways of how the names came about.  Here is ours...

I found a dog online that I loved, and my sister and I went out to get him.  His name was Gino and he was dark brindle.  Well, when we arrived at the shelter, he had already been taken, but his brother, Marco, was there.  Marco was a light brown/khaki color.  The shelter man said that the 6 brothers and sisters that came in were all given Italian names, the dark ones were given Southern names, and the light ones were given Northern names.  So, we took home Marco.  Both my sister and I were obsessed with Pirates of the Caribbean (i think we saw it 8 times in the theater) and wanted to name the puppy Captain Jack.  So we did!  It worked out perfectly because he had "eyeliner", liked to steal things, and liked booty.  And now, he can officially claim a peg leg (I swear we didn't plan this part of it)!!!!!  So, Jack was originally Marco, the Northern Italian gentleman.  And now he is the naughty little pirate he was always meant to be 🙂

Oh, yay, a topic that is "light" enough that I think I can post without crying.  🙂

I touched on this in his blog, but here's Raven's name story:

I had his grandmother Emma (registered name, she was AKC papered and I rescued her from the pound).  Emma was pregnant and she had her puppies just before I left the country to go on location for a movie shoot with a friend Christopher Lambert, the actor starring in it.  Christopher starred in a cult classic film called Highlander, his character was Conner MacLeod.  So, when time to name my pick of that litter, I registered Raven's dad "Conner MacLeod Simas".

I showed Conner and made a sperm donation at a show for the sperm bank so that I could neuter him.  Then when he died of cancer, I used that to "make" a puppy by AI.  My pick from that litter was Raven.  I named him that because that movie had a tv series from it with a kinsman named Duncan MacLeod starring in it.  Two puppies from that litter were named Duncan for that reason by the families.  The tv series had a "sequel knockoff" called Raven, about another immortal character.  Since Raven was a Sequel Knockoff to Conner, I named him Raven MacLeod Simas.  Also, the Raven totem signifies immortality, and my Raven made Conner live on in my life.

🙂  Dawn

Rottie Raven, osteosarcoma at 8-1/2 years old, amputation in October '09 and in February '10 due to liver mets he went back to heaven where he came from.  raven.tripawds.com

Now I have Miles, rottie mix amputee from a shelter and traveled 1500 miles to find his way here through the Rescue Railroad thanks to tripawds.com.  miles.tripawds.com

Trouble came into our lives when we had absolutley zero plans for having a dog.  Our last dog had been a stray I rescued, and after my husband spent several weeks away from home one summer, Chewy decided he didn't live with us any longer.  She was so upset when he came home, we ended up having to rehome her.  At that point we declared there would be no more dogs.

Several years later, a friend had an accidental litter.  We were at their house when the pups were about 10 weeks old.  Sharon asked jokingly if we wanted a puppy.  We looked at each other and said what a sweet little thing that red puppy was, but no, we didn't need a puppy.  We went home and talked about having a new puppy, went back to see it, and told her we'd take the pup.  The comment was made, 'We're in trouble now."  Thus the appropriate name - Trouble.

I know now we were 'chosen' to care for this beautiful girl.  We were her gift - her chance at a longer life.

When we rescued Tasha she already had her name, we thought about changing it but she was 3 years old and was used to her name so we left it.

We still call her Tasha but we also call her The Bully Dog. Bully because sometimes she can be sooo stubborn and she is so strong she can just can just bully her way through.  Big Blink

Tasha 8 years old, First cancer diagnosis 6/26/09, Last cancer diagnosis 9/26/09, Amputation 10/01/09, Loving our girl moment by moment.

Tasha lost her battle and became my Angel on May 4 2011. Forever in my heart….

For Jerry, I just wanted a name that sounded cool if I was running down the street screaming it. (GD fans grin here.) His full name, Jerry G Dawg. We can thank the Oaktown pack for the name of his legacy, Wyatt Ray Dawg.

Over the last 20 years we have had 6 dogs in all.  First was Chance, we named him that because we got him from some friends that couldn't keep him anymore.  Thus the 2nd Chance!  To keep him company we adopted a german shep. female and named her Ava after Ava Gardner because she was so beautiful.  When we moved from Chicago to AZ, Chance became ill and had to be put down.  A few months later we went to one of the local shelters to find a companion for Ava.  Ava passed away from old age in Jan. 2007.  There was a little spaniel mix locked in a crate with the biggest, saddest brown eyes.  He just sucked my husband right into the crate with him and we adopted Glee.  Glee was so named because he was always a happy go lucky little guy.  We lost him to mast cell in July 2007.

In May of 2004 we took a friend to the local humane society to find a dog, he had lost both of his shepherds the year before and wanted a companion. (he's a confirmed bachelor)  While there, we saw a kennel with 2 pups.  Looking at the paperwork on the kennel, there were originally 10 puppies but only 2 were left.  One was already being adopted, I asked the volunteer if there was a reason for the one not being adopted.  She said "That puppy is mean & nasty".  We adopted her and being she was a shep. mix, of course a German name!  Gretchen

After losing Ava & Glee, Gretchen was alone and you could see she was lonely.  I was at PetSmart checking out the dogs at the rescue there and saw Chuy.  Fell in Love right away.  Went home, brought back Gretchen and they hit it off right away.  We felt that Chuy was a good Spanish name for a dog from Mexico (that's where the shelter is based), so we just kept it.

And the new little sister Anka.  We just couldn't find a German name we liked, so we picked a Swedish one instead!

Chuy, showing everyone that Tripawds do everything 3 times better than regular dogs!

Harley is a rescue dog, so he had the name when we got him, but I think it has something to do with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

Nicknames: Harley-Barley; Har-Bar; Har; Har-Har; Poopie-Scoopie; Pooper-Dog.

(Storm, I see you posted your husband is from South Dakota … what area? I'm from Spearfish. Harley is from a shelter in Brookings, where I went to college.)

Toby, our Basenji, also came to us with his name.

Nicknames: Tobe; Tobers; Too-Bee; Little Man; Gmoby; Mr Wrinkles.

Our dogs have such boring name explanations! LOL

-Gwen & Harley (& Toby, too)

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
