We've been without power here for a few days, so I haven't had time to visit Tripawds much this week. But I wanted to update everyone on Queen Nova, who will be celebrating her 44 MONTH ampuversary this week. Things remain to be WONDERFUL after Nova's scary weekend (Memorial Day weekend) when our vet told us she likely had a brain tumor. However, she has not shown any of the symptoms she had that weekend since then, and has been nothing but happy, healthy and hungry.
We haven't been back to the vet. Frankly, I am frustrated with the diagnosis they gave me, and a little angry because I believed them and honestly thought that we were near the end with Nova. Obviously we weren't. I guess I will never really know for sure if there is anything going on in there in that big ol' head of hers. I am thankful that the crisis we went through forced me to think through some of the details on how to prepare to say goodbye to her, whenever that time may come. And it sure doesn't seem to be any time soon. But I know that Danes typically live 6-10 years and Nova has lived over 8.5... over 3.5 of those years beating cancer... so each day with her is a precious gift.
We had a power outage this past week, and I was sick with worry over the girls being left at home all day in the heat. Nova does not do well with heat, and Memorial Day weekend was unbearably hot too, so it brought some bad memories to the surface. Thankfully, we have a generator, but still were not able to run the air conditioning. My husband and sons made sure the girls were comfortable to help reassure me... my husband even went out and got this monstrous industrial-sized fan to keep them cool. My sons hand fed the girls ice cubes during the day, watered them down with the hose to help them cool off, and texted me updates at work so I could see that they were fine.
It seems like Nova has gained some weight back, although I can not take her to the vet until next week to get her on the scale. My husband is camping in Minnesota all this week, and he has taken the Queen's "Mobile Throne"... (our minivan), which is the only vehicle that Nova can be transported in. I am keeping my fingers crossed for no dog emergencies this week, because there is no way that I can get Nova into my little Honda. I am trying my best to relax and not worry, but, well, you know how it is.... you never stop worrying!
Anyway, I wanted to share this picture I took today of the Queen. It was the first time this week that she's been able to spend an extended time outside (since the heat was so horrendous this week). Doesn't she look beautiful and so happy? She looks skinnier than she actually is though.
Dane Mom Sue at nova.tripawds.com and Mom to Beautiful Great Dane Queen Nova, a Blind Tripawd, who kicked cancer's butt from 11/08-03/13. The Queen is Spirit Nova now, but her legacy lives on here at Tripawds!
Oh, Sue, what a great update!!!! Nova, may you continue to make your vets look silly for a long time to come!!!
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

I couldn't agree more. Keep the vets looking silly Nova. You look wonderful. And your mum certainly knows how to take good photos.
Karen and Spirit Magnum
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
Hooray for a good update.
(Abby would say that's not skinny, that's "super-model perfect!")

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
We are honored to be her royal subjects! Dog Hail the Queen! Dog Hail the Queen!
Sue, thanks for updating. I was wondering how the pack was doing and hoping that all was well in the Queendom. So happy to hear it is. Nova is truly an inspirational superstar, she makes our hearts sing!
Breathe, relax, your girls are doing great. We send all our three-legged love your way, and lots of good wishes for a long healthy happy summer!

Oh, I have been wondering how the Queen was doing!!! I am soooo happy she's doing so well. She looks healthy, happy and oh, so regal! I know it's hard not to worry about what's coming and when (I thought I had the market cornered on that), but look at her!!! She's fabulous! Breathe deep and try to enjoy it! And if you don't mind, send a little of that warm our way -- it's July, and we've only had maybe three or four days above 70 this year!
Long live the Queen!!!
