Thank you to all who post and answer on this site as Nellie is now 15 days post op right rear leg amputation and 11 years old (Greyhound) this site has been my saviour never have I needed the support of so many to ensure I'm doing the right things so thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Nellie is making slow steady progress, we have some pain crying only for couple of seconds couple of times a day so think its nerve (checking on site) and I have looked at exercises to help give strength! Pain med stopped now just in inflacam eating (well hand feed) managed to poo without assistance so very proud a real milestone.
Appears to be tiring on the one back leg hence the need to try to strengthen any particular food any good??
Aww you are so sweet! Yay to YOU and Nellie, what a great team you make!
Sounds like you're doing all the right things with her. Give it time, 15 days is not a lot of time to build up strength. As for foods, my feeling is to just keep doing what you're doing and making sure she doesn't gain any weight. It's easy to over-treat our dogs while we're giving them some exercise activity. As you focus on building stronger core muscles that remaining back leg will appear to get stronger and stronger. Slow and steady, you'll both get there.
Tell us more about the exercises you're doing. Maybe in Size and Age Matters? It's a good place to talk about senior dog recoveries.

Oh, this is so good to hear, Nellie is doing well and you are being an excellent Mom
Yep, 2 weeks is still early days but as soon as her stitches come out (should be soon, no?) she will be more confident and more mobile, as happens with most of our doggies here.
I would try to meet a physiotherapist in a couple of weeks to see what can be done to help her strengthening her core muscles.
Hydrotherapy might be an option as she would get to use her muscles without putting any strain on her legs.
Eurydice will start hydro soon, not because she desperately needs it as she is only 5 but because due to her weight (150 Pounds) I want her to keep her muscles going as efficiently as possible. Also, I know she will love being in the pool !
I'm sure pawrents of older dogs will give you more specific advice, so hang in there!
As for food, the important thing now is to make sure she eats enough.
I had to hand feed my girl for a month after surgery but after that she slowly went back to being independent there too.
And yay for the !
Sending you a big bear hug and cuddles to your girl, you are doing a great job
