January 25th was Rusty’s 2nd anniversary of his amputation! Every day that we have with him is a blessing. Two years ago we had almost no hope that he would still be with us; that he is, is a testament to the fight that he has put up against this terrible disease, two outstanding Dr.’s and the love and support from dozens of his supporters. He thrives on the love of his human friends as much as seeing his doggie friends. He has maintained a great attitude throughout his ordeal; even on the days when he is sick he doesn’t complain and seems apologetic that we have to clean up after him. It has been challenging at times for us, we are both in our 70’s, but extremely rewarding seeing how he deals with his cancer, amputation and all of the related issues; we have learned a lot about life from him which we will be forever grateful.
The past two months have been relatively quiet medically for Rusty; we saw Dr. Macy on the 5th and he was pleased with the improvements in Rusty’s liver and kidney functions. Between the medications and four meals a day, all of his test results were in normal ranges, with the exception of the liver ATL which has been elevated since his chemo treatments. He also gained almost two pounds. Dr. Macy has been checking with his colleagues around the country regarding the treatment of “Fanconi Syndrome”. So far he has not found anyone who has treated this condition; he is still optimistic that with treatment this will not have a long term impact on Rusty’s liver and kidneys.
Dr. Macy had us up the dosage of the potassium citrate which immediately put Rusty into intestinal distress with vomiting and diarrhea; Dr. Macy said I guess we have pushed the limits of what his stomach can handle. After “resetting” his stomach and resuming the regular dosage of meds Rusty has been doing very well and his weight is holding steady.

Jackie, Angel Abby and MBBunnyRita's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. — Beth and Spirit Smilin' Sammy
Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
Happy Ampuversary Rusty! I am not exaggerating when I say that you are one of our heroes! Keep up the good fight!
Lisa and Zeus
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...
