Well we can't believe it, Romeo celebrated his two month ampuversary October 17th!!!! And a big thank you to Jakesmom
for posting Jake's one month ampuversary which reminded us
it was Romeo's special day as well.
We've been very lucky Romeo's made a wonderful recovery. Those first two weeks were rough, but things seem pretty much back to normal now. And normal, as Toto's mom noted, normal feels like a blessing. We went to Vermont last week and we visited Romeo's favorite place Indian Brook Reservoir. We always walk out to our favorite secret spot we call the swimming spot.We all swim there together.Early on after surgery, we witnessed the change in Romeo's stamina and felt we had to accept we'd never make it back to the swimming spot. It's a rocky, hilly trail around the water. Well on October 10 Romeo made it back to the swimming spot! We didn't go swimming (October in Vermont is pretty chilly), but Romeo waded around!
Romeo's enjoyed some celebrity staus as a Tripawd. He visited my daughter's new school---her entire class came out to greet him. And he inspired a series of Tripawd dog drawings! In Vermont we tried to take Romeo to Applefest in the Champlain Islands. Well they had blocked off the road and the parking was a long way from the festivities and the shuttle bus was not an option. We explained to the police officer we had a three legged dog who wanted to attend, but wouldn't make
it all the way. Well, the officer took one look at Romeo
and radioed to the officer down the road. We got to drive Romeo right to heart of the festival. He had a great time socializing with other dogs, sniffing antiques, meeting some goats, and eating a hotdog! Advocate for Tripawd access!
Romeo had a great day yesterday visiting his horse friends
and playing with his puppy friends Maizy and Chou Chou.
We're keeping up with the acupuncture, chinese herbs, and supplements. Unfortunately, Romeo doesn't seem to be able to tolerate any NSAIDS. He ends up with bloody diarrhea every time. Metacam was our last hope. We really wish we could keep him on a maintenance dose, but unfortunately that doesn't seem
like it is an option. This also means we won't be able to do
metronomics
if we decided we wanted too.
We might have to take a break from our blog. Our computer crashed (I hooked up this old dinosaur). We lost tons of pictures (back up! don't be a fool like me!). The car needs major work, we need a new computer, we're buried in student loans, and scrambling every month to pay our daughter's private school tuition (very bad public schools here in New Haven). I could really freak out about everything right now. But last night I said to my partner, "No matter what I feel like any day Romeo is still with us is a great day."
Thanks to all of you for your support and your inspiration.
And a special shout out to Karin and Zoe. Zoe had her surgery the day after Romeo. How is she doing?
Eve, Romeo,and family
Ok, maybe this seems silly but I just have to say I am mortified I wrote "too" in place of "to." Can I plead computer problems? This old computer makes it impossible to go back and correct what I've written. And my post is full of typos.
I realize this apology is silly, but I have my pride.....
And Romeo says "Hey Mom! Don't make me look bad!"
Yay Romeo!! It sounds like you got your happy life back, and you're making your mom's days happy too. Congratulations on your ampuversary!
Eve, I can empathize with your stress level--aren't dogs wonderful about caring only for the "now"? When people comment on my ability to stay calm, I say it's because I live with dogs. They teach us so much.

Yeah Romeo!! Way to go!!
I just love hearing about these special puppy dogs doing well. They all deserve it.
It is fun to see all the added attention our tripawds get isn't it? Rocky gets love and attention everywhere he goes. Sounds like Romeo is enjoying it too.
Michelle
Happy 2 month Ampuversary Romeo!! I am so glad that Romeo is doing so well, and has become a celebrity at your daughter's school AND at the Applefest!! Did you take any pictures? Hopefully, they weren't some of the ones lost in your computer breakdown.
I understand to well the pressures of finances these days, but you're so right... just one look at my Jake, and we're just so happy he's still here with us... we forget about all our other problems... at least for a short while...
I hope that Romeo gets to celebrate many more happy ampuversaries!!!! Whatever you're doing with him... it's working... so keep it up!!!
Luv,
Jake's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Hi Eve,
I'm so glad to hear that Romeo is doing well. I was thinking about you guys recently and wondering how you were doing. Thanks for the shout out for Zoe. She too is enjoying life as a tripawd. She is climbing hills, gone on a short hike in the woods, and has mastered jumping on and off her favorite spot, which is the couch so she can watch what is going on in the backyard. Sometimes she takes off running and I don't even think she realizes she is missing a leg. I took her with me yesterday to my Grandma's 90th birthday party, she definetely loves all the extra attention she gets now. She really knows how to work a room. She goes to every single person to make sure they see her.
I agree, I am focusing on the now and thinking that everything else will works itself out, because it always does. It is these times in life that we put things in perspective, slow down and realize what is truly important to us. We see that every day with them is a blessing and we enjoy it that much more. We just hope and pray that we have many more ampuversaries to come.
Please try to keep us posted, even if you have to use the old dinosaur, every so often. Again, I'm so glad to hear from you. It is uplifting to hear Romeo is so happy and enjoying life.
Karin and Zoe
Romeo! How wonderful it had to be to go to your old stomping grounds! There's nothing like feeding the dog spirit with trips like that. I hope you were able to get a few pix from then, because I'll bet it was absolutely stunningly beautiful outside. Then you add Romeo and his colors to the picture. Oh, glorious. I've already got it in my head. Happy guy. Happy family. Happy day!
May 2001-Jan 21, 2010.....I'm a dog and I'm AWESOME!..... Always.
Eve, it's so great to hear about Romeo's progress! We've been wondering how he was doing. Congratulations on getting past the hurdles, and living life the Romeo way, one hop at a time. Ain't it funny how you couldn't see this far ahead just a few short weeks ago?
Isn't it great, the celebrity status you get just by being a Tripawd? Wow, pretty cool getting the cops to allow you to drive up to the entrance gates like that! Tripawds are heroes everywhere, and it's so awesome the way we make an impact on so many people.
Karin and Zoe are so right; cancer sucks, but one of the unexpected gifts that it does bring is that it shows you what's really impawtant in life.
Keep it up Romeo, we're cheering you on from here in Colorado!

October 17 is a pretty momentous anniversary around here too---our last big earthquake. I wasn't around then but mom says it was wicked scary!
