Thanks for the details Heather, you have a good memory. Were you taking notes? What an awesome Mom you are.

We're so glad you got to see him. Is he sleeping with his Barney?

We'll pray that his counts go down and that this is all very manageable. Zeus can kick this thing's butt, whatever it is, we know it. Keep us posted OK?

Heather,

How high are his blood values?  The main kidney indicators are BUN, creatinine, and phosphorus.  Is he anemic?  The fact that he is eating and making urine is very good.  Depending on what part of the country you are in it is also a good idea to test for Leptospirosis, a bacteria that can affect the kidneys.  Your vets are smart for doing a urine culture; did they mention if he has protein in his urine?

It sounds like he is getting great care!  His blood pressure really is high and that can be secondary to kidney disease and IV fluid treatment or could be a primary thing that is making his kidneys worse.  I am glad that they started him on blood pressure meds (usually benazepril or amlodipine).

Please keep us updated.

I will get a copy of everything tonight - I honestly didn't think to keep one on Monday. Kecia gave me xrays and blood work and sent me rushing off to South Paws in Rush Hour traffic which in Virigina could take HOURS...luckily it only took 45 min. Anyway...if I remember correctly, the creatinine was 11.4 (yeah, I know - off the chart) and it came down in 12 hours to 10. I don't remember the BUN off the top of my head, but it was really high too - it came down a couple points. I'll be sure to get all that for you - I would love your input. He is not anemic they said.

I will ask about the Leptospirosis - I'm in Northern VA - crazy Washington DC tri-state area. I don't believe there is protein in the urine - I can't 100% recall. I'll check on that as well.

I just checked on him and he slept like a champ last night, no vomiting and ate well. The blood pressure is down to 148 - GOOD BOY!!! Blood work this morning - I'm so anxious about it but I KNOW IT WILL BE GOOD NEWS!!! Staying pawsitive. We have a few things left to do yet, like write our book, "SAVING ZEUS"

I'll update later -

All our love

I FORGOT BARNEY last night...I went right from work, Barney is coming to work with me today so I can take him to Zeus tonight. I did have his harness in the car and put that on him last night, he instantly became more confident when I did that and was wagging his tail like crazy when I was getting it on him. HE LOVES THAT HARNESS - it must give off good vibes you think?Winker I told them not to take it off unless absolutely necessary.

It's his SuperDog Cape.

Love you Jer!

I got Zeus' Blood work results and I tell ya, my boy ROCKS Cool I'm such a proud mom!

His BUN count when we took him in on Monday night was 144 and it's down to 77!!!!!

His Creatinine was 11.4 when we took him in on Monday night and it's down to 8.1 !!! This is HUGE! It had to have been ALL THE PRAYERS and love and yes - that harness too. We would like to see it to 2 or 3, but we'll take 5.

I told him last night how much everyone was praying and routing for him...he knows...

I'll check in later Big Blink

MOMMY IS SO HOPPY I COULD CRY!

Hi Heather

I am guessing the values you gave are reversed (77 for Creatinine and 8.1 for BUN), unless your lab uses a different scale which is not uncommon. Those are great values and it sounds as though you are out of the woods. What a Big Scare !!!!

We noticed that Tazzie's creatinine crept up the last couple of weeks (and we did not use Cisplatin for the last chemo - just a very high protein diet for the last few weeks and Carboplatin). I think I need to bring the protein down in his diet (his kibble is 40% protein). It is hard to juggle cancer and kidneys and Zeus's crisis brings this home as something a few of us need to seriously consider.

OSA is no fun, but neither is kidney disease.

Keep up the good work, Zeusy.

I am sooooo happy to hear that Zeus pulled through and is doing better!  I was thinking about ya and worried.  You sound like my posts, spouting out kidney values lol.  I've become somewhat of a kidney amateur expert (an oxymoron I know) if I say so myself.  Mac's kidneys were bright in spots on his ultrasound too.  The blood test results have stayed about the same for a couple weeks now, with his BUN about 35, creatinine around 3.5, albumin 1.5, and creatinine/protein ratio at 13.5.  I'm sure they told you but when they're on lots of fluids the results of some test can be skewed because things become dilute, but it sounds like he's on the right track.  I'm so glad he's able to eat the bland diet.  I don't know what exactly he's eating, but if it's the Science Diet K/D, I applaud him more than you know.  That stuff is the nastiest looking "food" I've ever seen.  We're going to try Purina N/F, but for now we're trying to feed a low-protein high-carb diet of mostly pasta, rice, potatoes, and vegetables with some chicken and good quality protein thrown in.  I wish Mac had Zeus' appetite, it's been a pain trying to get him to eat, and especially taking pills.  He doesn't have high blood pressure but he is taking Enalapril for the kidneys and fish oil twice a day.

I really pity you for having to drive in rush hour in NoVa.  I'd rather have a root canal performed with a dull spoon and no painkillers Laughing.  I have to say I do get a guilty pleasure going on 66 toward Centreville at rush hour and watching all the cars on the left stuck at a standstill while I speed by.  I'm all "mwahahahaha suckers!".........until I leave too late one day and have to be in the same situation.

Hi Everyone - I wanted to give you guys an update on Zeus...

There is nothing super eventful except that Mommy REALLY misses her boy...his counts came down again this morning by a point (7.1 creatinine yeah!) and we are just staying the course with fluids until they level out and then we can determine where we are with the kidney disease and how we're going to manage it long term. Blood will be drawn tomorrow morning again and I'm throwing out to the Universe that we want a 5.5 creatinine!! I want my baby home on Sunday!

He's had a few VERYminor complications from all the fluid and blood drawing and he is obviously stiff from being in a crate, but they take him out every 3 hours and even put a walkway of mats from his crate to the door (I saw it myself!) - he is being treated like a king there. I had a physical therapist work with him to massage and stretch and she said that he did super with his PT. I went to visit tonight and he just fell asleep in my lap and snored away. He'll have PT again tomorrow Smile

Thanks again everyone for all your thoughts and prayers - if you think of it, please keep them coming.

Much love,

Heather and Zeus too...
