Here's the update from today's onc visit. When I went in he said right from the get-go, "it's up to you if you want to do x-rays today." (He's always reading my mind, that Dr. V....)
He said if we are happy with what we're doing (MP w/ cytoxan/piroxicam + arte) and don't want to consider doing anything else (since she's tolerating those so well), then he totally respects that and there's no point in doing xrays. But, if we did xrays and they showed progression of the disease, we could give up on the cytoxan and he said there are 2 options: either try another IV chemo (adriamycin, which I don't really want to do) or another at home daily chemo pill (Masitinib). (Obviously if the xrays showed the mets were stable we'd just stick with what we're doing.)
So, I need to research Masitinib a bit and see if we'd be interested in trying it. He said it is similar to Palladia, but some dogs do fine on one and not on the other. He also gave me an estimate so I can compare the cost of the masitinib v. the cytoxan. Have to do some research and if we are willing to give it a try, then we'll go ahead and do the x-rays.
Anyway, the good news is that he listened to her lungs for a long time and they still sound great. (Also her CBC was "perfect.")
She is ready for her medicinal nap now!
(If anyone has good/bad experience with masitinib, I'd be interested to hear it - you can PM me. I'll also search the forums and see what I find...)
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
We are gonna party like rock stars tomorrow! Granted its our annual Halloween Bash, but also it's our Abby-girl's ampuversary — a whole freakin' year!!!! That girl is aMAZing!!!
We had next to no troubles with the Masitinib (Kinavet) — just a teensy bit of tummy rumbling and gas the first few days… the blood work also indicated that there was no trouble handling the meds. It has really good statistics as far as effectiveness — hence, why we tried it. Rio was only on it for a month though — so it's a small data pool. If you decide to go there, hopefully it will be more effective for you…

Way to go Abby, keep slappin' that crap in the face, love it. The monkey pudge pug here is having weight issues, so I think he will have to settle for cherrios for his treat, Big Paws up to Abby, Spirit Gus and Dan
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
Woo hoo! Congratulations Abby-girl! Not that you are even going to see this today (the BIG day) - you'll be too busy celebrating!

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end. On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
