Dr. Waters' story on Good Morning America about his Grey Muzzle Tour of the US.  He is gathering info on Rotties in their teens (very rare) to learn their secrets of being cancer-free.

In case I didn't embed this correctly:

View Rottweiller Cancer Cure Story on ABC.

Rottie Raven, osteosarcoma at 8-1/2 years old, amputation in October '09 and in February '10 due to liver mets he went back to heaven where he came from.  raven.tripawds.com

Now I have Miles, rottie mix amputee from a shelter and traveled 1500 miles to find his way here through the Rescue Railroad thanks to tripawds.com.  miles.tripawds.com

Thanks Dawn--great story.  I like the theory I've been hearing more and more lately that cancer could be a chronic disease instead of a terminal one.  Maybe the "gray muzzles" will get us one step closer!

Yes, thanks for sharing this story. Looks like we finally got it to embed properly! It just takes a while to load form the ABC site.

wow.  Isn't that something.....especially the part about LIVING with the cancer and powering through it....I wonder if other breeds can do the same thing....thanks so much for posting this.  I know some breeds are more prone to some diseases than others, which is one of the reasons it is said that mixed breeds are SUPPOSED to be healthier...but I sometimes wonder if the mixes can also bring whatever the bad stuff is right into the mix.  I guess it is a crapshoot no matter what....and us humans have to learn to power through it (the crapshoot!!)

Thanks again for posting it.

Very, very cool story (of course, I did have a moment of pouting and wondering why my Rottweiler couldn't have been one of the lucky ones to live into his teens confused)  It would be wonderful if this (or anything, really!) could help us become closer to figuring out this terrible disease and how to beat it … or at least live with it.  Thanks for sharing this!

(It's nice to see a positive news piece involving Rottweilers, as well.)

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.

Really interesting.  Question:  Does anyone know if The American Cancer Society funds canine cancer studies?  I have been doing a lot of thinking about how money can be raised for canine cancer studies, but more specifically for studies that focus more so on the homeopathic end of things.

Scientific studies that involve nutrition, supplements, biologically available substances/supplements tend to not be on the receiving end of funds because in the end, even if a treatment is discovered, there is no money to be made since you cannot patent a "naturally occuring" substance.  Or am I totally misinformed?

Anyway, how can we funnel more money to canine cancer studies (and not just the ones that are testing chemo drugs).  I didn't go the homeopathic way with Opie, but sort of wish that I had jumped into that arena.  At the very least as an addition to chemo.

Something was "right" in these Rottie's lives if they are able to live with cancer and keep it in check.  What is the common denominator?  Genetics?  Diet? Habitat? Exercise?  Some combination?  I find myself very interested.  Thanks for posting this.

Nancy, you're not misinformed, we too have read these same conclusions elsewhere. You're questions are great, we're going to send them to our oncologist contacts and see what they have to say. What I do know is that The American Cancer Society does not deal with canine cancer, but the Morris Animal Foundation does. This is why Team Tripawds raises money to participate in their fundraising events like this Saturday's K9 Cancer Walk in Sacramento. We love the Morris Foundation since they are the oldest and most respected animal health research organization in the world. Here's a list of some of their studies.
