Hi all, I know I have been AWOL for several months. Work, dogs and home life have kept me very busy and things are only going to get busier with a granddaughter due any time now and a new business venture starting. However I wanted to take a moment while I could to wish our wonderful Radar a happy ampuversary (1 year next week) and send some of his positive energy out to those here in the forum. At this time there are no signs of mets or cancer in him at all and other than the missing leg he is a happy healthy borzoi.
In the past year Radar has had to learn to do things differently. His attitude about certain things has changed – giving us joy and challanges. In ways he has had to rethink his place in the world: among the other dogs where he was once alpha he now is best buds with the dogs lowest in the pack heirarchy. He is more loving, giving and needing of attention, worries about his food when other dogs are around but still keeps up with the gang while running in the yard. He even has taken to digging – yes, digging holes with his one front leg. It is a bit humorous to watch but the determination and hard work he puts into getting the job done can only be admired.
This past spring we took him to the borzoi nationals to participate in the parade of companions and visit with some of his friends and admirers. Radar was one of those dogs who “loved” being in the show ring, preening, prancing and being in the limelight. As soon as he saw the ring he wanted to go in and got so excited it was funny. When we did the parade of companions he got to go around the ring and smiled the whole way. He was, however, obviously dissapointed when no judge came over to check him out and didn't want to leave the ring until someone did. He's such a ham.
Here are some pics we took of him at the nationals.

tired but happy
Even though I don't come and visit here often any more, all of you and your special pups our in our hearts and thoughts. We often tell folks about this site and hope that some of them have been able to come by and get the inspiration and help that they need.
Thanks to everyone who was there for us when we needed it and here's looking to another year.

Connie, what a beautiful update, thank you. It's so good to hear about how life has been for Radar, and how well he's adapted. He is definitely the superstar that he looks like in the pictures! Congratulations on a year out, may there be many many more!

Thank you all.
We are definitely thrilled that Radar is doing so well and hope that he and his success serve as inspiration for anyone who might be questioning the decision to amputate.
Since the moment he was born Radar has been special to me and I guarantee you that your feelings for what makes a dog special do not change after amputation. In fact, the versatility, strength, joy and ability to adapt that they continue to show you only make you admire and love them more.
