Hello,

I keep telling you guys how pics of your pups give me goosebumps.  Sammy and Coop look so much like my Bo-dog that I had as a kid.  I found him as a puppy and couldn't find an owner.  I talked my parents into letting me keep him.  I kept saying "he won't get that big...". My parents let me keep him even though his paws were already the size of saucers!

Anyway- the vet guessed he was a newfie-mix.  Definitely newfie- I never knew for sure what else, but I suspected Lab.

Here are a couple of scanned photos, not good quality, but all I have of him.  He passed in 1986..... so a few dog generations have passed.  Who knows, maybe Sammy and Coop have roots in California!!

The image urls looked bad, or perhaps the Facebook photos may not be set for public viewing.

Wow, I pulled up the picture of your Bo-dog and my co-worker said it was Sammy!  You are right, they look like they could all be from the same pack.

I wonder if this is a new breed of dog, starting with Bo.  Did I ever tell you that I named my car Bo?  I spell it Beau though... (yep, I am a car namer...)

Maybe there is a genetic component between them.... Sammy was thrown from the car in front of me over the side of a big hill.  That was in Maple Valley.  Who knows where his family is from...

Thanks for sharing the picture, he was sure a beauty.

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Yep, Bo was one beauty! May I ask what his personality was? Cooper is a gentle giant, he is very laid back and never hurries hardly anywhere. I have seen Cooper move "fast" maybe three times. He has only ever growled at people a couple of times, and I trusted his judgment implicitly, and he only ever took a snap at one person that I know of which was the vet that said the best thing to do with him was put him down. Boy did I have fun with Bo's picture and Coopers picture at work today, every single person thought it was a " before " and " after " picture. I have to say, when I first saw the picture of Bo in your kitchen I was sitting there scratching my head wondering where the picture was taken, then it became obvious this was NOT Cooper. wow.

Wow! I had to do a double take - it's uncanny how they all look identical! Amazing! Too bad they don't do ancestry.com for dogs - I bet you'd find some connection or link between them somewhere.  What a great discovery! laugh

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Those two are so close!

Coop's dad - I fixed it. The pics were in your post.  If the pics are over 500px wide, it doesn't like it.  I just fudged the sizes on both.

Hi Coops Dad,

Bo was very laid back.  He was not at all aggressive- but he was VERY protective of me.  If someone shook my hand he would get between us and push ME away.  I don't remember him acting menacing to the other person- he just would push me away from the perceived danger.  He did not see all that well- especially distances, so would sometimes bark at movement he could not define.  And he had a very deep WOOOOOOF.  It would scare the c**p out of people, but he was very gentle.   He was one of the smartest dogs I have ever known, it seemed like he learned everything the first time we showed him.  I would walk him without a leash and he did a perfect heel every time (I would never walk off leash on the streets now, but then I was young and showing off oh-my).

And it was really hard to keep him out of water- any water.  If there was nothing else around he would run through puddles with his head down to splash himself.  Not long after I found him we took a family trip to the beach.  I used to body surf often, and was a very strong swimmer.  So I left him on the beach and went out to body surf- and he kept coming in after me trying to save me!  We had never trained him- but that is what newfies do- water rescue.  I finally had to have someone on the beach hold his leash so he wouldn't drown in the surf trying to save me.  He would also come after me when I would swim in rivers.  In the rare occasions we took him out in a boat he always wanted to jump out to swim.

I'm glad you are having fun with his picture.  He was sure a great dog, thanks to you guys I have taken a happy trip down memory lane.

Now, how I got from Bo dog to pugs is a whole 'nother thing... at least I stuck with the black dog theme big-grin.

Karen,

Well, there must be some very strong Newfy traits that just go and go - reading your rendition of Bo was like reading about Cooper written by you. And yes, water.... if there is water Cooper wants in it and I also cant take Cooper in the boat because he would just jump in. He will just walk right off a bank into the water without regard. and he swims like a fish! he actually seems to be able to float or tread water as he stays stationary in water over his head, what he lacks on hard ground he makes up for in the water! Thanks for sharing Bo with us! Bo will now be in my memories forever!

Well, sounds like Bo and Cooper are the related ones.  Sammy is a speed machine and hates water.  He won't go into it unless coaxed and still can't swim...

He hasn't ever growled at anyone, other then the vet techs at toe nail trimming time.  It takes 3 of them, with a muzzle, to get his nails done every month.  His mouth will start quivering if you brush him on his hind end then he will let out these high "girly" screeches to let you know he is completely bothered, but that's it.

He loves all people!
