Elly turned 2 years old yesterday!  She has been with me now for more than 14 months and has made great progress in overcoming her fears.  I need to get a blog post done and update what we have been doing, but for now I will share a video I made yesterday showing off some of the tricks she has learned.

Some of the tricks are pretty new so there are still lots of treats being handed out. We are working on 'chaining' behaviors together (several behaviors for one treat) which Elly does not particularly enjoy big-grin

Some of these tricks are also great for strength and balance training but in this video we are just doing them for fun.

Enjoy!

PS I'm definitely going to try some of these. How do you get her to do the roll overs?

Wow! This is just spectacular. Ollie will be so impressed when I show him the video. He hasn't mastered any tricks other than shake.

Now, Elly, make sure your Mom has CAKE for you!

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Wow impressive indeed!  How far you have come in 14 months is a true testament to yours moms love and patience.  I wouldn't know where to even start to teach these tricks.  Maybe mom should do a "how to train your dog video" for us. 😀  Happy Birthday sweet girl you are rocking it along with your complete adorableness!  Steak and cake for supper for you and Obie.

SUPER DUPER impressive! clapShe's got quite a large brain in that tiny little head of hers!

I'm curious, what kind of camera are you using? That's a fun point-of-view to watch.

OK Wyatt is feeling competitive, we're going to have to start getting back into our trick dog training!

Thanks everybody!  It sure is fun to work with Elly after 16 years of pugs.  It always makes me laugh when trainers say that dogs will do tricks for praise...they obviously never tried training a pug big-grin Elly is at least half pug (supposedly) and the treats are a big driver for her, but she seems to genuinely enjoy 'school'.

Clare- roll over was actually really easy to teach Elly because she likes to play on her back and loves belly rubs so she does not object to being on her back, some dogs just don't like it. I'll try and make a short vid and show how I learned in one of our classes.  Roll over is really good for core strength.

Sally- I have to give lots of credit to the instructors and classes we have taken, I've learned so much about training.

Kathi- doesn't Ollie get the paper and slippers?  Those are pretty good tricks.  Elly will get one of my slippers but only when I am in the shower and she usually takes it downstairs.

Rene- I used my GoPro on a stick.  I've been thinking about filming some of our balance stuff mostly so I can see how she is doing and how she plants her feet so I have been playing around with angles.

The most useful thing I taught her is 'tag' which for us means touching something with her nose.  I've used that to get her over her fear of plastic bags and her fear of going under things.

The hardest thing I have taught her so far is 'bow'.  It took me months of trying before I figured out how to get her to understand what I wanted.

Loads of tips here. Thank you, Karen. Meg loves lying on her back, Elsie doesn't. So that may be the issue. It's actually Elsie I want to teach to roll over, as I figure she'd look like a capsized beetle (I know, but we have to amuse ourselves somehow...) But I'll keep trying. She is at least EXTREMELY food motivated, which is obviously a help. Elly is very clearly enjoying her training. You both are. That's what's so lovely. And I am definitely going to look into getting a GoPro stick. Rene's right. The POV is great.
