Cocoa got a card today! It was a pleasant surprise -- even if it didn't dawn on me for a moment or two that it was really addressed to Cocoa not me! Cocoa wrote her vet and sent some pictures a couple weeks ago. The vet wrote Cocoa back!
Dear Cocoa,
I was so happy to get your letter and learn that you are doing well. I have thought about you often after you left the hospital and have wondered if you were doing ok. However, I felt very confident that your new mom would take excellent care of you and that you would have a loving home. Sometimes I never hear from my patients again and never know if they are doing well or not. Therefore, it made me feel great to read your letter. It brought tears of happiness.
I knew you were a special dog the moment I saw you in the exam room. I saw that you were all the qualities one would want in a dog: loving, sweet, brave and still so trusting even after such a rough start in life. I knew I had to do something to help you. Being able to help you once again reminded me of why I became a veterinarian in the first place.
Tell your mom that I think you will be an excellent therapy dog. I know you will inspire those who are going through rough times.
Take care and keep in touch.
Love, Dr. Pittman
P.S. You look great in your pictures! Send more when you get the chance.
How great is that?!
That made me tear up a little.
You are meant to be together.
I think my post disappeared and I didn't rewrite it, but I too had second thoughts about having Comet when I got her. I didn't have intentions of keeping her, I just wanted her leg fixed.
I went as far as placing an ad in the paper to give her away. I even practically begged a friend to take her. But my husband asked me if we could keep her. So, I did.
I've never loved anything furry as much as I loved her. I don't think I ever will. She was just special. We were so bonded and knew each other so well.
I suspect this will happen with you and Cocoa in time. I truly in my heart believe fate brought you together.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
I remember when you first posted the letter you were going to send to the vet. And then you went to another forum and said you were out of your mind and what were you thinking and oh dear God in heaven please help and...Yet here you are, calmer, wiser, happier. And so is Cocoa.
You two are a good team. Whether or not she becomes a therapy dog really doesn't matter. Her primary job is to be your friend, to bring something to you that you may be missing (and may not know you're missing). Everything else is gravy.
I'm delighted Cocoa's vet responded, especially with such a sweet and heartfelt message. But I'm not at all surprised. Vets don't go into business for the money. They do it for all the right reasons. And those are the same reasons you took a chance on a wounded stray pup and decided to become her guardian angel. Just watch: In time, she will become yours. These dogs end up saving us as much as we save them.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Simply beautiful. Your vet is a gem.
