Any pawrents out there with goldens under the age of 2?
MB Wiggly Wrigley and I are enrolled in the Morris Animal Foundation's Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, which is designed to follow the habits, nutrition and environment of 3,000 golden retrievers over their lifetimes. Goldens, as a breed, have the highest incident of cancers. According to the Golden Retriever Club of America, about 60 percent of all goldens die of some form of cancer. The study hopes to determine factors that contribute to those cancers. While the project is only enrolling goldens at this point, the data collected will positively impact the health of all breeds.

Please consider participating in this important study. If we can help one dog avoid osteosarcoma, or any other kind of cancer, it will be an effort well spent.

Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
This is an awesome project, thank you so much for participating and spreading the word. Morris is definitely looking for more dogs to be a part of it, so hey people, enroll today!

I'm glad that you enrolled Wrigley. I had wondered if you and OK Scout enrolled your young dogs. Harley is my 4th golden and the third with cancer.
Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/
Jerry/Admin — Anything we can do to spread the word would be appreciated. Is there a way we could give this more attention? Although the study is only for golden retrievers, it ultimately will benefit all breeds.
Kathy, you and that handsome Harley are in my prayers. I am sorry you have had to go through this three times. Goldens are so sweet and smart that once you get hooked on the breed it is impossible to not want a one. My daughter, whose golden is Sammy's brother, is going to have a sonogram tomorrow for an unexplainable high white blood cell count. Of course, we fear the worst. Yesterday, when we were talking about the cancer rate in goldens, she said, "So, our hearts are just going to be broken over and over, right?"
(BTW, Kathy, Wrigley often sleeps with his head on the arm of the couch. It sure doesn't look comfortable to me!)

We've covered in the News Blog and the Forums a while back, so really by just keeping this topic active and also if you want to submit a guest blog post about your participation in the study, for our News Blog , we would be happy to publish it!

I contacted the Morris Animal Foundation about enrolling MB Tom when we first heard about the golden retriever lifetime study (in a tripawds forum post) earlier this year. We want to do our part (however small) to help understand why goldens are plagued by cancer-- they have the single highest cancer rates of any dog breed. In the words of an emergency vet we encountered in the days before Scout died, "goldens are cancer factories" We must do all we can change this, because goldens are the most wonderful dogs.
Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
Jerry, good idea about the blog. I may do that although, from what I understand, our participation mainly consists of an annual questionnaire and physical exam.
Catherine, I am glad you may be a part of this. Last I heard, they have several hundred dogs enrolled and will continue to add more until they reach 3,000. We are headed back to the University of Illinois tomorrow so Sosa, our daughter's golden, can be tested for Hemangiosarcoma. Wish us luck.

Beth, I just went back and read your post regarding Sosa. All fingers and paws crossed here that the high WBC numbers are due to a harmless infection. Please update us tomorrow on how the appointment went. Is there a test for hemangiosarcoma? What is it? I know you watch Sosa during the day and are very close to him, not to mention the link to your beloved Sammy. Thinking of and sending all the positive energy we can muster (which is oodles!).
