Congratulations, Abby! Way to kick butt on Boris and Natasha! I'm asking mom if we can have a special treat tonight in honor of this milestone occasion.
I LOVE your video, and I totally agree! I think Monkeybutt loves you a TON. And this confession coming right on the heels of his love-note video for Isabelle. He must really love us Tripawd girls. I hope I'm not next on his stalker list!

So how is Abby's leg? Did a day or two of rest fix her up? We're on pins and needles here, Ma!

Well... It's kind of a long story and I have been up and down about it the last couple of days. Monday all day she was mopey, but then after a bad bout of diarrhea she was her usual terrorist self that night, racing around, etc. So we went to the beach yesterday and she was fine at first, but then started stumbling again. We turned back way early but she still was stumbling and breathing a little heavy and laid down several times, which is NOT normal. I was very upset the whole way home and imagining terrible things.... While I was waiting for her onc to call back, she started furiously licking one toenail. AND... She jumped up to race around and chase a fly again! I figured either she is the most stoic dog ever, or there is no spread if cancer to that leg... Long chat with her onc and he thinks it is just a combo of things all hitting at once: the heat got her down, bit of a tummy issue (probably drank a little of the nasty bay water), plus a problem with her toenail and/or a strained wrist.
Her toenail does look just a bit funny, like maybe it has a little tear in it at the base... I imagine that would be painful to get sand in... And would maybe make her stumble?? Might try a regular old walk today, although that is not nearly as much fun as the beach, and see how she does.
Sorry about the novella... But it seems like she just wanted to scare me by getting hit with heat issues/naseau/toenail trouble all at once!
Thanks for checking on her!! And thanks again to everyone for the good wishes for her ampuversary. (she is licking her toenail again as I type. Anybody have toenail pain advice?)
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I think toenail problems must hurt like an SOB. If it hurts to walk and she tries to compensate and walk a bit differently, she surely might stumble or trip.
Evelyn gets toenail problems all the time. I have no idea why. She has terribly long quicks so her nails are much longer than I want them to be. Cutting them, though, means I'm cutting off her toes! I won't cut off her toes. She has snagged them before and torn them all the way to her foot. Awful, awful, awful. The only cure at that point is to remove the nail. We've done that 2 or 3 times. I would almost want to put socks on her to prevent that, except she would eat my arm as I was putting the socks on.
Sorry I have no ideas about how to fix Abby's foot. I can restate that I think toenail problems hurt a lot. Maybe that's what's going on.

Thanks, that does help. I am really thinking (hoping) it is just that. Just wish she'd let me put some neosporin and a bandaid on it and take it easy today! Ha.
Thanks again for checking on her.

I'll second what Shari said.
Quad pug Tani hurt one of her toenails, or the skin and pad around it once- not sure how it happened no one saw it. But it was bleeding and caused her enough pain that she would hold her paw up in the air, and Tani does not usually show pain. So a quad pug can hold one front paw up in the air, but a tripawd has to hop or maybe in Abby's case stumble on it.
I hope she feels better soon. It is so tough when they don't act 'normal'!

Oh, Jackie,
I totally understand but that's because we imagine the worst! If Abby was a healthy puppy, licking a toenail and have tummy issues wouldn't be a big deal.
If your vet isn't concerned, then try not to worry.
Comet scared the bejeebies out of me after Christmas because she had diarrhea for a week. I took her to her ortho vet because I felt more confident in him at the time. He reassured me, it happens all the time after Christmas since dogs get junk. (which was true) So, put it in your head dogs get diarrhea!
As for the toe licking, Comet did it all the time. It's probably just sore from bouncing around. But sometimes it's just a habit too. Rocket does it and I find myself imagining all sorts of things in those 5 minutes he is doing it! I've imagined Rocket blowing out his knee at least 3 times just this week and it's just Wed.! A couple of weeks ago, I imagined his eye looked funny (that lasted a week)!
I know you are upset as most of us would be. If you can, think of good stuff when you get worried. Or distract yourself.
good thoughts, good thoughts, goods thoughts, good thoughts, good thoughts, goods thoughts

Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Thanks everyone. I try to not freak out, but it's hard to not worry every time she does something out of the norm. Like...now for instance, it is 8:40, the time we would normally be driving to the beach and if we weren't, then she would normally be bugging the heck out of me... But instead she went back to bed and is sleeping... I'm trying to not worry, because she is sometimes a very lazy girl in the mornings (one of our fave things about her...) but still... Can't help but worry that she is not up and hopping around and trying to herd me over toward my walking shoes. Especially since it is not that hot this a.m. and her tummy issues seem to have passed, so would not have thought she would be sleeping right now.
But I am thinking happy thoughts and not worrying.... Sort of.
Dododododododo!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.
Love Never Ends
Well, she woke up and started stealing my slippers, so we just went for a 25 min hop&stop around the neighborhood. I have been measuring her leg every once in a while so that I can determine if the "swelling" is in my head or actually in her wrist. It is a mere 1/4 inch smaller than yesterday so was maybe just a wee bit puffy. Seems ok now and I'm sticking with the toenail trouble theory.
All seems to be well!
