We have an announcement to make, which you probably figured out by reading this topic’s title. We’ve always been a two-dog house, and even though it’s been hard on us so soon after losing Max, we decided long ago that we’d always do what’s best for Linda, and we didn’t want to make her be an only dog when she’s always had a buddy.
The problem was that Linda has always been a little timid around other dogs at first, so we had to pick the right one. We were initially considering an older dog, maybe a year or two old. That’s what Linda was when we got her, and we like the idea of giving an older dog a chance. But on the flip side, we thought a puppy would be more dependent on Linda, with less chance of her suddenly feeling dominated or pushed out of her place in the house. In short, the adult vs. puppy issue was a crapshoot that could have gone either way. But then a puppy in a local rescue shelter we support caught our eye, and we couldn’t stop thinking about him. It wasn’t long before eight-week-old Bernie the puppy became the newest member of our family. According to the DNA test we ran on him, he’s an Australian Shepard, Collie, and Pekingese mix. We saw a photo of his mom, and she looks like a black lab with a pit bull head. Basically, he’s a 100% pure mutt. Here are some photos from when Diane brought him and Linda by my station on the day she picked him up.

As you can see from the pictures, Linda was less than thrilled when we got him. Bernie tried to be friends with her, but she’d have none of it. She hated him, growling and snarling at him whenever he got near her. It was horrible – she even ran away from him if he got too close. It was a bad first week for us, because we thought we’d made a horrible mistake.
But I was at work one day a week later when Di called me and said something had happened. As if someone had flipped a switch, Linda suddenly decided that she liked him. They’re best buddies now, at least most of the time. Bernie is a very outgoing puppy, and like most other pups his age, he’s obnoxious as hell. In short, he’s a hyperactive menace to civilized life. But Linda shows a lot of patience with him, and every now and then she’ll bark hard in his face or squash him with her head if he gets too far out of line. Nice to see her taking on the role of big sister.

We’ve had Bernie a couple of weeks now. He wasn’t very big at first, and his body was fairly well proportioned. He didn’t look like he was going to be very big. But he seems to have undergone a growth spurt in the past week, and his head, legs and paws have gotten huge. He’s growing fast. Our vet thinks Bernie has a good chance of growing to Max’s size – 70 or 80 pounds. I look at the little monster now and all can think is “Yikes!”

Oh I'm so happy to hear that you've adopted this adobable little guy... and that Linda has finally accepted him! I love the picture of them together! Bernie is absolutely adorable!!!
I know that my Wolfie was so depressed after we lost Jake... and then right before Christmas, my hubby came home with this tiny little kitten... Wolfie was immediately in love with her, and they have become best buddies. I wasn't ready for another animal to come into our home... but seeing how happy Wolfie is now... I'm so glad that hubby brought her home!
Enjoy your new baby... and keep posting pictures!!!

Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
I am so happy for your family, especially Linda. Congratulations on the new little guy. He is adorable.

Awwww. A new puppy! He is beautiful. Maybe he will grow up to look like Tazzie or like Max's predecessor, Shadow. (Or maybe he has Dane lurking in there, but Pekingnese - hahaha).
Glad Linda has warmed up to him. She looks really happy. Keep us posted on their adventures.
Oh yeah.......I love the story and I really love the pictures, he is very cute and I am glad Linda is warming up!! We have been on a trip, but when I return home I will be looking for a new girl to bring home. Nothing will ever replace Paris, but we have always had a dog or two and I am just a better person with a dog!!
I am glad your family found a new soul to love!
Ginny & Angel Paris
Grateful for every moment we had with Paris…..no regrets!
Honoring her life by opening our hearts & home to Addy!
Awe, he's a nice addition to the family. He is quite striking, going to be a beauty when he's grown. I know Trouble was less than thrilled when we brought Duke home in May, but they are good now. I think Duke loves her more than she loves him, but that's ok. We actually are a little worried about Duke when Trouble's journey ends. He cries when she isn't with him.
Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul. Run free at Rainbow Bridge.
The November Five - Spirits Max, Cherry, Tika, Trouble & Nova. 11/2008 - 3/2013 An era ends as Queen Nova crossed the Bridge.
They are so cute together. Congratulations on the new addition.

From Linda's smile – and John's! – it looks like the pack is happy with the new addition. We are too, congratulations!

One last log on before heading for the airport and I am greeted by this great story and wonderful photos. We could not be happier for your entire family. Bernie is a very cute little guy and I am sure that he will grow up into a very hansome companion for everyone. My first was a shelter pup and I was able to enjoy her for 17½ years. Hope that you will be able to top both the enjoyment and longevity.
Spirit Cherry's Dad - Bob
I am melting! Who couldn't gush over that darling baby?!!! It just warms my heart you have a new baby and now a very happy family again! If he is as sweet as he looks, Linda for sure will be much happier dog!
I hope you guys post Bernie puppy antics! Puppies make everyone smile!
Ginny, good luck! Just an FYI since you are in northern Indiana. My ex husband has a no kill dog shelter in Middlebury (spell?) by Elkhart. I haven't talk with him in a few years, but I know he still has the shelter.
Bob - you're next! (I hope!)
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
He is so cute! We're glad that Linda warmed up to him - they will be great friends for each other. Congratulations!

Yeaaaay!!!!
You guys, this is such a happy post, thank you for putting smiles on our faces.
I love how Linda suddenly decided she adores him, that's just perfect. Bernie sure is going to be a big pup, look at those feet! But I especially love those ears of his.
Oh we can't wait to meet him, he looks like a fine pup. Congrats!
