Hi all,

First of all thank you all for being so awesome and for contributing to such an awesome place. When my 7 year old baby english bulldog Wrigley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on 10/21 I thought it was the end of the world and a certain death sentence. After an inconclusive needle biopsy the same day as her diagnosis, we ultimately decided that a right frontal amputation was the next best step to relieve her pain regardless of the pathology results from the biopsy. This was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make even though everything suggested it was nearly a no-brainer. My wife and I struggled with guilt and worried that she would resent us for taking her leg and thankfully this site existed to help us understand that our furry babies just don't think that way and that she would still love us. Our baby went into surgery this afternoon and roughly 2 hours later she joined the tripawd world. All reports from the doctors are that she was a complete champ and everything went as planned. They even commented that she had a great big airway (I'm sorry, a bulldog with a large airway?) which made anesthesia much more tolerable. We just got the call that she was out of surgery a little while ago and it sounds like she may have already been briefly standing up on 3 legs which would be amazing. We hope to visit her later tonight which I'm sure will be very difficult but cathartic for all of us. She will spend the night in the ICU for observation and then if all goes according to plan she will be discharged late tomorrow night to come home and begin her recovery. While we are immensely relieved to have her out of surgery, we know this is just the beginning of a long road. The limb will now be sent off for analysis and then we will likely begin chemo to hopefully give her the best odds of survival. If this terrible time has taught us anything it is that every day is precious and we never know when our time will come. We will certainly try to share our story as we live and fight through this so that hopefully anyone who has the misfortune of coming behind us has the resources to know that its going to be ok.

Welcome to the group no one really wanted to join!

Even though it was over 2 years ago for Murphy, I still remember how overwhelmed I felt.  His biopsy was also inconclusive, but it took a couple of weeks for the results.  So frustrating.

The first couple of weeks will be the hardest.  Most dogs come home on several medications.  Murphy came home on Rimadyl, Tramadol & Gabapentin ... all for pain.  Since there were 3 of us giving him his meds, I wrote out a schedule to help keep track of the times.  He was on them for about 2 weeks then weaned off.  We also used ice packs to the incision to help with swelling and massaged around the area to help reabsorb the extra fluid that can build up.

We have a ranch house, so stairs weren't a problem for us.  We do have a couple of 1-step areas, so I put a tap-light in those areas so that Murphy could see those steps if he was walking at night.  That way he could judge the step in the dark.  We just used them for a few weeks, until the batteries ran out.  Look into getting a harness for Wrigley, either the ruffwear or the  tripawd convert, both have a handle on top to help get her out of the car or with the stairs.

Murphy didn't really want to eat much after surgery, so we just did rice with chicken broth and some chicken.  We gave him his meds with peanut butter.

Feel free to ask any questions, post about your concerns or just keep us updated on her progress.  And don't forget pictures!

WRIGLEY!! I know the first words of "support" out of my mouth shou be..."PICTURES!! WE HAVE TO HAVE PICTURES OF WRIGLEY!" There can't be a person on the planet who doesn't love Bulldogs!!

Everyone here understands the kick in the gut that comes with that diagnosis. We also understand the depth of love it takes to make a decision to amputate. You've done your research and you are proceeding with a plan...and all with a positive attitude. You've seen the downloads and the links to other tripawd Bulldogs from Jerry. You know about scatter rugs for traction , a doggy bed that has enough firmness that it doesn't wiggle around when tripawds try to stand up.

Stay connected to us, especially during recovery. No matter how much research you've done, there's nothing like being supported by members whose dogs have had smooth recoveries, rough recoveries, fast recoveries, excruciatingly slow recoveries! Yep, a whole lot of first hand experience here!

Guilt??? Are you kidding me?? Wrigley is sooo happy you love him enough to give himmore QUALITY time with you lain free! You are giving Wrigley more time for spoiling, loving, tummy rubs, ear scratches, treats, loud snoring, and let me mention spoiling ine more time! Nothing like spoiling a tripawd!!

Try a d get a good night's sleep...you may have a few sleepless nights for a bit. Besides, Wrigley will be high as a kite not feeling a thing!!

Sending love to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Welcome Wrigley and family!! 🙂  Wrigley sounds like she is a real trooper and it is great that she came through surgery with flying colors.

The first couple of weeks post surgery can be a bit of a roller coaster ride for all of you...and for us humans it is often a time of second guessing every time the going gets a little rough.  But once past that initial post op period and all the needed pain meds you will see your Wrigley living life to the fullest again, pain-free, and you will know you made the right decision.

Welcome!  Everyone one else here pretty much covered everything but wanted to stop by and say "hi".  If you have any questions once Wrigley is home post away.  You will find a wealth of knowledge here and we're always willing to help.  I stayed glued to this place and just let the love and support wash over me during Maxs recovery.  Glad to hear surgery went well and I'm sure you're anxious to get him back home where he belongs!

So update time! I just got off the phone with the vet techs and Wrigley is doing AMAZING so far. She is doing so well that they were ready to discharge her almost immediately this morning but unfortunately that will have to wait until later this afternoon when both my wife and I are out of work. I am already so proud of her based on the reports we've gotten. She has apparently already been standing and walking/turning and even pooped already as a tripawd! Just like any other good bully, reports of a strong appetite are not surprising at all. Her demeanor seems to be great and it sounds like there is a good balance of her pain meds to where she is comfortable and yet still mostly her normal lovable self (giving lots of kisses to all the nurses!). While we haven't seen her in person, we did get a video and picture sent to us by a friend who is a vet at the hospital and Wrigley looks really great. As high as we are now on the roller coaster of emotions I'm sure seeing her in person for the first time will be tough and lord know we will still have plenty of hard times as she heals and adapts to her new life. I want to again sincerely thank all of you for your support and for concentrating so much knowledge and information into this place. Honestly I'm still a little scared for what the future may hold for us but today is a great day and you all have been a part of helping us to get to this first big milestone. I will certainly post pictures as soon as possible because she really is the cutest bulldog ever and with only 3 legs she might even be cuter...

Great idea. More vets should do this! Visiting in the hospital can cause stress in dogs who are likely to still be very sedated, get quite excited to see their people, then wonder why they left without them.

Sounds like Wrigley is in good hands. Please keep us posted.

YAAAAAAAAAY!!! YAHOO!! WOFF!!! WOOF!!! Good job Wrigley!!clap
And poop too! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR POOP!

Yes indeedy, today is a great day and that's all that matters!!!

When I picked my Happy Hannah up, I didn't even look at her incision! She wasn't, so why should I? I just looked into her happy druggy eyes and told her what a good girl she was over and over! She just wagged and woo woooed and was ready to go home! When I fi ally "glanced" at it when home when she wasn't looking, the huge amou t of fur they shaved was more of a shock than anything else.

Now she may have some ups and downs for several days and nights. She still has the good hospital pain meds in her and she probably, for now, thinks she can run a marathon. Just rest a d potty breaks for now though.

Looking forward to more great updates!

Hugs to all!

I promised some pictures so here we are! Wrigley is the mostly white one and her sister Addison is the mostly brown one. They are both 7 with birthdays in early July.

These two are from a while ago of my girls enjoying a typical night on the couch (no room for anyone else!)Image Enlarger

This one is just the other night after Wrigley came home from her initial needle biopsy, clearly she is a little grouchy due to pain and pain meds and Addison is trying to reassure her that it's going to be ok.

Here's another grouchy one of Wrigley (kids never smile when you want them to!) from the night she came home from her biopsy (notice the wrap where her IV was and the shoulder area where they took the samples)

This is Wrigley this morning with her pretty blue soft cone. Is it just me or does she look much happier in this picture (post amputation) compared to the other one?

This is video of her this morning moving around a little bit. You might be able to hear our vet friend in the background encouraging her, it has been a godsend to have someone "on the inside" to give us updates, I know most people aren't so lucky.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Houston, we have Poop!!! Wrigley finally pooped at home for the first time today (roughly 4 days post surgery). I can't say for sure that is was the pumpkin she got last night and this morning that helped move things along but I'm sure it didn't hurt to have all that fiber behind whatever had built up. This post probably seems really dumb to those who haven't yet had their amputation but as I'm starting to understand, it is not unusual for the anesthesia and pain meds to cause wicked constipation. She has been such a trooper the last few days and has been amazing and finding her balance. Wrigley is still figuring out things like backing up and turning (I've learned how much dogs use the front for steering and the back for speed) but she's done most things on her own so far outside of any stairs. She's peeing (and now pooping) completely unassisted which is great and she seems to be doing ok even on the few slippery hardwood/vynl areas that aren't covered with rugs or runners. She goes a little too fast sometimes and does stumble occasionally (like on uneven grass or misjudging the height/distance to get on her bed or in her crate) but most of the time shes back up before we can get over and assist her. Her incision looks great and we've had no issues so far (*knock on wood*) with any oozing or fluid buildup. We have found that a white t-shirt has been great to protect the area, keep her warm, and act as a pseudo assist harness. She's been getting a fresh t-shirt most days and then we just cinch up where its loose and tie with a rubber band. Using a light colored t-shirt is nice for detecting oozing/leaking too. Overall we are doing well so far and I couldn't be more proud of Wrigley for being such a fighter. I'll try to get some pictures and/or video to post when we can.

They are both Adorable!   Sounds like she's got a handle on this recovery thing.  I'm sure the pumpkin did help. I give both my dogs pumpkin everyday just to keep them regular. Plus it's just good for them. Give both Addison and Wrigley a kiss on those smoochable heads for me.  Love love this good update!

I wanted to type up a quick update for everyone since it's been a few days since we posted. Wrigley is doing incredible, I'm so proud of her. We are now a full week into life as a tripawd and she really seems to be adapting well. I can tell with each day that she is learning her new center of balance and she's doing a lot completely unassisted. She can already do the big 4 (pee, poop, drink, and eat) all by herself without any help which is great. The number of stumbles has dropped with each passing day as she seems to figure out how to modulate her speed. She has been wearing a t-shirt (changed almost daily) since we brought her home which I'm really glad we did for multiple reasons. For her mom and dad the shirt has helped us move past the constant reminder of what she went through because we don't have to see the fresh incision constantly. We have found we are much more comfortable carrying her when she has the shirt on. We also really like that the shirt is protecting the area from getting any dirt or water on it and can function as an early warning if the incision starts leaking anything. We got her one of the Big Barker beds and she absolutely loves it (as does her sister). Her stitches come out on Friday and then shortly after that I think we'll start transitioning away from the t-shirt towards a harness which will be more helpful as we move towards tackling a few stairs. All in all she is doing really well so far and seems to be getting stronger each day. We still have a long road ahead but we are ready to fight as long as she keeps showing us she wants to fight. Hopefully we will get her biopsy results from the removed limb soon and then we'll plan out what the next step is but until then we'll try to enjoy every bonus day we can with our baby. Thanks again to everyone for your prayers and support and we'll try to continue to update semi-regularly as possible!

Loving this update!!! LOVING IT!!!

And these licture!!! OMF!!! Cutest pups ever!!! Cannot stop smiling!!

It's always delightful to hear how well dogs are doing this early in the recovery! To hear that a BULLDOG is adapting so well this early in is an extra delightful treat!!!

Glad you go the Big Barker Bed . I really do feel like the support in that particular bed helps in the healing process and prevents some of the stiffness and soreness some dogs experience in recovery.

Wasn't able to see the video doggone it! I have a tavlet and it said something like "plug in required". I KNOW It had to be adorable though!!!

You are doing an excellent job of taking care of Wrigley! Loving and spoiling a Bulldog is so much fun. Loving and spoiling a tripawd Bulldog....of the charts fun!!

Thanks for the update and PRECIOUS pictures!!!

Love and hugs to all!
