It has been a long time but I wanted to give an update on my Bailey. He has done so well. Four days after his surgery he was up and down our porch stairs with zero help. His recovery went smoothly without any complications. Within a short amount of time he was no longer complaining of pain. I think we had him off all pain medicine around 2 weeks. Initially we were told that we should expect him to be with us for 3-6 months, maybe 6 since his lung x-ray was clear. His surgery was in February and here we are in December and he is still doing well!!!
Last week we thought that it was time to say goodbye. All of a sudden he couldn't walk without falling down, he lost interest in his food and what he did eat he ended up throwing up. His eyes were moving oddly and he was so lethargic and just wanted to lay there. When we went to the vet the next morning she looked at his eyes and said that the movement was actually a good sign. Since the movement was side to side it indicated an ear problem rather than a brain problem like an up and down movement would indicate. She said that it could be what was causing all of his problems, the dizziness, the nausea and so on. So she did an ear swab to confirm and sure enough he had a major infection that was causing all of his problems. Now a week later he is just about back to himself. The vet also listened to his lungs and said that she didn't hear any tell tale signs of the cancer overcoming his lungs yet. I can't tell you how happy we are that we have more time with our first "baby". I am hoping that we may make it to the year mark.
I wanted to thank all of you for your stories, videos and wealth of knowledge that you gave to us. Amputating his leg was one of the hardest decisions that we had to make but I am so glad that we decided to do it. I can't imagine how much harder his life would have been with that painful limb still attached. He is truly doing amazing!!

YAY FOR EAR PROBLEMS!!!!!!!
And you know what? It is never too early to start the pawty for annupcoming ONE YEAR AMPUVERSARY!!! Those kinds of milestones require partying weeks in advance building up to the big day! Ice cream and cake, burgers and steaks for Bailey starting now!!!!!
Thanks for bringing us all some good cheer! Grinning ear to ear over here!!
LOVE AND HUGS!!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I'm so happy that Bailey is doing well and I have no doubt Bailey will make it to that year mark!!
Those ear infections sure can throw our pups for a loop. Thank goodness you and the vet caught it because I've always heard that if left untreated it could affect their hearing. It's crazy how something so minor can disrupt the equilibrium. My husband dealt with vertigo (problem within the inner ear) several years ago which caused dizziness and nausea. I'm so glad Bailey is on the mend because I know what my poor hubby went through.

I am so happy to be reading this about your sweet guy Bailey......whenever I read happy updates here on our beloved Tripawds, I am filled with joy.
You ironically became a member here on Tripawds the same exact day I lost my precious Lab Tripawd Polly......so yep, anytime I can celebrate another pup here doing well against this ugly, crappy disease, it truly makes my heart very happy.
Hoping Bailey continues to do great, and celebrates many happy milestones ahead!
Bonnie & Angel Polly
Sahana, my husband has had a few bouts of vertigo as well. Not fun at all. The vet said that dogs with it and 4 legs still fall over so she said it is especially hard on a 3 legged dog.
Bonnie, so sorry to hear about your sweet Polly but how crazy that the day I joined was the day she passed. The disease is so horrible!
Thanks everyone for the positive comments. I hope that we too will be celebrating his ampuversary. I will try to update more often.
