Hi Everyone!  I just stumbled upon this forum this weekend while doing research.  Very helpful!  Last week our 13 year old dog Sunny was diagnosed with a sarcoma on the top of his back left leg.  The good news is that we caught it early enough that it has not spread. However, given our options we have decided to amputate thanks in part to what we have read here.  Our biggest concern was his age, but seeing even older dogs going through this has given us a lot of hope.  I still definitely have doubts, but I think in part that is because we have options.  That said the surgery is scheduled for Wednesday morning and I am ready to move forward and get Sunny recovered, cancer free.  I even went ahead and made his first appointment for physical therapy post surgery today as well.  We had another dog who had to have back surgery and I was amazed at how much it helped him.  I'm hopeful that this will also help Sunny.  It also helps right now to have something positive to focus on.

I started a blog for him here.  Hopefully, eventually it will be able to help others like so many of the stories here did for me.

Tom,

Mischa and I will be thinking of you and Sunny on Wednesdayheart I was in your very shoes 2 weeks ago, and I completely agree; this site has been so helpful and reassuring! It definitely helped making the decision to amputate Mischa's leg a lot easier after reading so many other's personal accounts of very similar experiences. I'm very thankful for this site!

I hope Sunny recovers well! Hang in there 🙂

Best regards,

-Joy and Mischa

Thanks Joy and Mischa!  How is Mischa doing two weeks following surgery?  Unfortunately due to poor timing we have an out of town wedding next weekend which will only be about a week and a half post surgery.  We generally board at our vets and they have assured us they can handle him, but I still can't help but worry.  I go back and forth on it since I know being more confined for a long weekend wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for him in terms of his recovery.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.  The recovery period is proving fascinating to me because we had another dog who had to have surgery on his back for two ruptured disc.  Post surgery he had to be very confined to a crate which wasn't fun for him or us.  However, it honestly seems like most tripawd dogs get along pretty well after the first few days, all be it with a little help.
