My beloved 2 yr old companion, Waylan was hit by a car tonight. I just heard from the vet that they have to amputate his hind leg. The vet is hopeful that they can amputate at the ankle. I am in shock and disbelief and very saddened by the news. Any support, kind words, or advice would be greatly appreciated.
A little about my baby. Waylan is a mixed breed. He is 1/2 brittany spaniel 1/4 lab and a 1/4 grey hound. He is beautiful and looks exactly like a brittany spaniel. He is white with liver spots. He is very rambunctious and full of energy. He loves to bird hunt, swim, and chew on bones. He is also very mischievous. You definitely have to keep an eye on him. I love him dearly.
Tonight, we went outside for his nightly bathroom break before bed. He ran across the street. I saw a car coming and instantly had a bad feeling. I yelled Waylan stay but he ran to me. He got hit. It was the worst thing Ive seen and heard. I quickly picked my baby up and took him to the vet. I keep replaying the incident in my head and blame myself. I know I shouldn't but I do.
I now find this website and watch videos. I am inspired by these dogs and I know Waylan will strive. It is still just a shock and hard to understand why.
Welcome, and best wishes for Waylan's speedy recovery. We're sorry to hear about his accident, but glad you found us.
Partial amputations can cause various issues from delayed healing or repeated injury of the limb, to long term orthopedic concerns. But they also allow for the use of a prosthetic. We just recently published a series of video interviews discussing the benefits of braces and prosthetics. Please consult closely with your vet regarding post-op wound care and seek the advice of a certified rehab vet regarding ongoing care. Without any sort of prosthetic, Waylan will likely try to use the remaining limb causing damage from impact and/or long term orthopedic issues . But every dog is different, and please keep in mind we are not vets.
Regardless, if Waylan is otherwise fit and healthy he should adapt quickly and do quite well on three legs. Consider downloading the Tripawds e-books for more fast answers to common questions and a more in depth discussion about recovery and care.
Please keep us posted!

I know yoj are scared out of your mind! Of course you are replaying it in yor mind! It's a shocking trauma to yor senses. And accidents happen. Period. End of story. There is no real "why". We are here for you, okay? Cry, scream, vent, but whatever you do, do not waste one second on guilt!! Not one second! Waylan would NOT want that and you owe it to Waylan to do what he wants, right??
Okay, let's B R E A T H E.......B R E A T H E.....seriously, it helps! And again......B R E A T H E...
Yes, I don't know where you are in Waylan's situation today, but Admin.'s advice is realy good. And, I'd just like to add to try and get an Orthopedic Srgeon and his surgical skill for the operationif possible.
Please update us as soon as you can. You are not alone on this journey, okay?
Hugs toyou and your sweet Waylan. Whole lotta' love foing n with you two!
