Hi all. This is my first time here. I just had my 13yo hound mix Ramsay's right front leg amputated due to osteosarcoma. I didn't initially want to do this because I thought at 13 he was too old to learn to get around on three legs. However the alternatives weren't acceptable so I went ahead with it. An x-ray taken today showed that he also suffers from hip dysplasia and arthritis in his back legs (which I never knew). Even so, the vet thought amputation was a viable option so I went ahead with it. I hope Ramsay agrees. The vet seemed to think 6 months might be his limit and if so, I just want him to enjoy the summer as best he can. I will try to spoil him rotten of course. I got him from the ASPCA when he was 6 1/2 yo and had been there for 6 months. Every extra day is precious to me, so I will take as much time off work as possible to enjoy his company. I have two other dogs, so I will have to monitor them so they don't bother him.

I found this site while researching harnesses to help with dogs getting up. Anyways, I read some of the threads and am encouraged by how some of the other dogs responded to amputation at an elderly age. I love my wizened old hoodoo hound and hope he feels I made the right decision.

Welcome Ramsay & Steve! We're always happy to hear from senior dogs. Please keep us posted. Your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Did you end up getting a harness from the Tripawds Gear Shop? If so which one? We'd love to hear your feedback.

Welcome Ramsay and Steve! Sorry you had to find this site, but what a wonderful place it is for all of us here. There is so much you can do to help his arthritis. Shooter is also a senior guy, but so far has no other issues. I give him Cosquin DS each day and you might have your vet check into Adequan. Not only are you a great parent for providing him a fur-ever home, but for caring enough to make however long he has left the best time ever. That is real love!

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

I'm going to get the Ruff Wear harness but I haven't measured him yet since he just had the operation yesterday. I should be picking him up on Thursday so I'll measure him then. Until I get it, I'll have to use a towel.

Thank you for the information and support. I'll check with the vet on those medications.

Hey Steve, instead of using a towel one of the tricks we recommend is getting a canvas grocery bag, cutting the sides open, and using it as a sling. Hoist your dog by using the handles on the bag. That makes a good temporary sling.

Welcome Ramsay and Steve!

I also have a senior pup (12.5) who is fighting osteosarcoma. She had one of her hind legs removed on May 2nd and she is getting around great!

Good luck to you and your boy and celebrate every moment. Watching Roxy recover from her amputation has been such an inspiration to me.

Hi Ramsay and Steve------any decision made out of love is the right decision:-) :-)

As others will tell yo, it's less about age and more about vibrancy and sparkle in the eyes and getting joy out of everyday. And you weren't even aware of his arthritis or hip issues and obviously he isn't letting it bother him either:-) :-) And it's of unexpected at all for an stay to show signs of arthritis for pups of a "certain age"

This is a major surgery and it's always a balancing act getting his pain meds right........but once the recovery starts grabbing hold and he figures out all the adjustments he needs to make and you see his sparkle come back-----WOW AND BAM:-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

No one knows anybody's timeframe but we do know he will have an eternity of love and spoiling and treats and joy given him every single second and that's the payoff:-) :-)

He's very lucky to have you as his best buddy and wonderful advocate!

We are here for you so don't hesitate to use everyone here as a resource. Get a good night's sleep tonight as you might have a few "restless" nights ahead.....or maybe of!

Pictues----we love pictures and we love celebrating first poops:-) :-) Really strange group we are!!

Stay strong and sending you tons of supportive e edgy!

Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Thanks Mica for the encouraging words regarding Roxy. It's good to know there are others with senior pups who are doing well. I pick Ramsay up tomorrow and am a bit apprehensive. I've got my fingers crossed.

I'll give this a try. Thanks for the tip. I'll let you know how it works out.

I wanted to welcome you and Ramsay to our pack here. My little pug Maggie was only 7 at the time of her amp and had no other mobility issues. But my quad pug Tani is almost 13 and has terrible arthritis. We have been using Adequan since December with excellent results.

Let us know when you get your pup home and keep us posted on how he is recovering. Lots of experience and support to be found here.

Well I picked up my boy yesterday from the vet.

First impressions- It's going to be rough. It hurts to see him lurch about. He wouldn't get out of the car when I got home, so I had to call for assistance. Unfortunately, I have five steps going into the house, both front and back. He was hesitant going up, which I expected but he eventually went in. We took him out to the back. He wouldn't go down the steps, again which I expected, so I carried him. I have two other dogs, so I had them meet him one at a time. That actually went better then I thought. They didn't harass him all night. He tried to pee but almost fell over, even with me trying to keep him steady with a makeshift sling. Eventually he did by not raising his leg. I carried him inside.

After my help left, I feed him. He still has a good appetite so that was encouraging. I ended up sitting next to him watching tv with his head on my leg. I decided to sleep on the couch, so he wouldn't have to go down the hall to the bedroom. After a couple of hours, he staggered down there anyways, so I followed. I have taken my bed frame apart and just have the mattress on the floor, so he can get onto it easier. He half flopped, half fell onto it. It agonizing seeing him like this. He was restless, maybe in pain, although I had given him all his meds. I couldn't help but wonder if I had done the right thing. I know it's very early, but the way he is discourages me. I have to hope things will improve. If I didn't try the amputation, I would berate myself for the rest of my life for not giving him a chance. It still hurts though to see him like this.

In the middle of the night he had to go out to the bathroom. I carried him down and used the sling to help him around but he didn't seem to need it much other then when he peed. He actually walked around a bit. He wouldn't go up the stairs, so I ended up carrying him in. He laid down by the couch again (where I set up some blankets to make it more comfortable) and we slept until the morning.

So a new day dawns, and we'll see how we manage it. I'll try to focus on one day at a time and stay positive.

Yay for him being home!

I know it seems really scary right now but his homecoming sounds very typical. Many dogs are woozy and dont' want to move around. Try to put yourself in his paws, and you'll see he is handling this much better than any human.  With each new day he will make more and more progress. There will be ups and downs, but pay close attention, celebrate those little achievements and pretty soon the recovery will be over.

Hang in there and holler if you  need anything.
