Hello everyone!

I've actually had an account here for a few months, but haven't been active much.  I enjoy the newsletter, and have read a few posts in my time on the site, but this is my first post.  I guess I should start by introducing my own little Tripawd, and letting you know a little about her, right?

Trinity is a Border Collie/Newfoundland mix - she's got the temperament, fur, and water affinity of a Newfie, but in a "more compact" Border Collie size.  She came to join our family near the end of 2009.  My best friend, who was volunteering at the Houston ASPCA, called me up to say, "There's a dog here you just have to meet.  I will caution you, she only has three legs."  On my next day off, I went in to meet her, and within minutes I knew she was coming home with me.

At that time, the only information I was provided with was that she'd had her leg amputated after getting hit by a car.  While I was standing in line to pay, a woman came up to me and asked if I was adopting Trinity.  Mind you, standing about five feet behind her was a cameraman.  After eyeing both her and the cameraman warily, I answered in the affirmative.  Turns out she was the producer for the show Animal Cops Houston.  She was able to give me more information regarding how Trinity came to a tripawd: she was hit by a car, and after her owners neglected to take her to the vet, a neighbor reported them; Trin was seized from them (By the time the ASPCA got ahold of her, infection had spread more than halfway up to her leg, and her right front limb had to be amputated at the shoulder.)  The produced asked if I was willing to have her contact me in a few months to film her "happy ending."  I said sure, fully expecting to never hear from her.

Fast forward to April 2010 when Trinity's episode aired; it was the first time I viewed footage of just how bad Trin's foot was.  Even with my background in nursing, it was extremely difficult to watch the episode without feeling sick.  The highlight of the episode was when the surgeon (on the TV) called out her name (to TV Trin), sweet Trinny Lou perked up and ran over to the television.  She barked at the screen, tail wagging as if she could recognize the man that had helped save her life.

She initially had a horrid fear of cars (with good reason!) & storm drains (not sure why?).  It ended up taking six months to reliably leash train her, and to this day she'll startle if a car honks too close to her.  Luckily, obedience training helped A LOT.  I taught her the command "ignore," and if there is something that I know will either distract her, or frighten her, I give her the command and she will zero in on my face and ignore everything else.  It has helped immensely with both her car & storm drain fear, her wariness of small dogs, and her love of squirrel & bird chasing.

I think I've talked enough, now.  Here's hoping I can meet some of y'all in the forums!

Welcome to the forums! Your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

What an amazing story! I'm so glad you decided to stop lurking and share your story here.

We always love to see pictures, hint, hint!

Here is how to add pictures to your forum posts.

I recently adopted a small pug mix girl who lost a back leg after getting hit by a car.  She has been with me for about 4.5 months.  She too was very wary around cars, she is better now but usually will stop while we are walking and watch the car go by.  Elly is also very curious about storm drains, I wouldn't say she is afraid of them.  But she will usually stop and sniff at them from the sidewalk above.

I like your 'ignore' command.  I'm working on 'watch me'.  Elly is kind of reactive with bigger dogs in certain situations, although she is getting better.  And she has something in her mix that makes her quite a tracker- if she gets a scent it is hard if not impossible to get her attention.

Again welcome, and nice to meet you and Trinity!

Welcome Roxy & Trinity Louise!  So sorry your poor girl had to endure all she did before she picked you for her forever home!   Your love for her just shines through your post!  You are an amazing mom making sure she has all the tools she needs to live a wonderful life.  Love the "ignore" command!  The beautiful Trinity Louise sure knew what she was doing when she "picked" you out.  Looking forward to hearing more about this beautiful girl and of course pictures too please!  Would love to see the segment on tv that aired about that special girl.

Wow, Thank you for adopting and sharing Trinity's story.  🙂  What an amazing thing you did for her.  I don't understand people not wanting to take care of their babies.   I would do anything for mine 🙂

Make sure to share lots & lots of pictures (we love them)

Hi Roxy and Trinny Lou, and welcome to the greatest pet support group in the world..... Wow, what a wonderful and happy start to her life being with you, and an eventful story..... I remember all those animal cops shows, Houston was one of my favorites, along with the original show NY City animal cops, but had to stop watching them, they truly depressed me. But I am ecstatic to see many adopted out to those such as yourself, that give these abused and severely neglected pets a new lease on life. Thank you so much for that 💜

Like Michelle and the others have already said, we do love any pics and videos you can possibly share with us, and continue to keep us updated with happy stories of sweet Trinity🐾

😊👍🐶

Well,  y'all said you wanted photos....

Trin when we first moved to our new location 2yrs ago, with her full coat of fur...this is pre-grooming.  Don't judge my horrid carpet, life with a Newfie mix is hard!

  "Is it massage time, ma?"

Within a few weeks of living in our new apartment, we discovered Trinity had allergies.  The vet put her on allergy meds, but that didn't help.  All it did was make her sleep all day.  It got really bad, and I felt horrible for her.  She was itching & scratching herself to the point of bald spots.  Months of doing what the vet told us, but still no relief.

A few months later, another another trip to the vet, this time w/a different one at the clinic, and because she was now scratching to the point of open sores.  I brought up my concerns about how much I hated how "drugged out" she was, and the fact that it wasn't helping.  Trin was still scratching even in her sleep.  The new vet recommended lower doses of meds, a change in her cocktail, a change in her bathing schedule, wound care, and supplements.

This is Trin after getting her beautiful coat shaved to make it easier to bathe her & clean/dress her wounds.  As you can tell, she is not impressed with her new haircut.

"Mom, I hate it.  Put it back."

You can see some of her bald spots in this one.  At this point in treatment, her neck and throat skin was healed and growing some fur back.  (That's her sister Nibbles, the photobomber, trying to steal a treat right out her mouth.)

"Hey, you know we're 'posed to share!"

Here are the girls waiting for daddy to get home.

"I totally heard the keys.  Think he brought us anything?"

Slowly but surely her fur grew back in, and then all of a sudden, Ms. Trin decided her butt was too cool for fur.  The vet recommended switching her to a grain free diet. After a few months of only moderate change, we tried single protein, limited ingredient food.

I'm happy to announce that after roughly six months of grain free food & three months on her new regimen of supplements, Trin's skin is healed, her fur has grown back enough that the few bald spots she still has aren't visible through her coat.  She's currently down to twice daily Rx allergy med, a zyrtec @bedtime, w/the occasional benadryl for 'bad days' (at the peak of treatment she was double the dose of Rx allergy med twice daily, 50mg of benadryl twice daily -sometimes with an extra dose midday- & zyrtec @bedtime).

As you can see from the two tiny pills next to the dish, today was a 'good day' even with all the running/rolling around she did in my best friend's back yard while we planted trees.

  "That's dinner isn't it?"

Hope the photos make a few of you smile!

Hugs from Trin & her mom, Roxy

Thanks for the pictures!  I totally get the carpet thing... I had a Newfie mix years ago, my Bo-dog was on the gigantic side.

I know it works, but I'm always slightly amazed by how much diet affects health.  My quad pug Tani was diagnosed with IBD when she was young and the vet thought it was a protein issue so he told me to put her on a food without chicken.  Luckily finding a food without chicken led me to grain free food.  Tani rarely had a tummy issue after that, and chicken became one of the major proteins I fed the pugs.  Clearly it was a grain issue combined with the 'name brand' food I fed (those were my novice dog food days!).

My quad pug Obie came to me from rescue with some skin and allergy issues, minor by comparison to Trinity. What worked the best for him was getting him off kibble as his main food source, even the high quality, grain free I use.  I feed the pugs Honest Kitchen as the main source with some canned food and kibble as treats and snacks.  HK is pricey but not too bad when you are feeding two small dogs. Obie is down to one benadryl a day now, but his worst allergy season is coming fast so we will see what happens. Sometimes I still have to put him on prescription meds.

I love that last picture- she is beautiful!  But then I'm a sucker for all black dogs.  My last four pups have all been all black, but with my latest addition I branched out to black and white smiley

She's beautiful!!!! I'm so glad you guys found each other!

I can definitely relate to the allergies. We're still trying to isolate both Mel's and Meesha's maladies. We're close, but in the meantime it's Benadryl twice daily. If not, Mel will actually scratch open wounds around her eyes.

Now the hair thing, we've recently moved and don't have carpet any more. That just means the hair forms communities in some of the strangest places. My plan is to get an iRobot (maybe two) to constantly vacuum since that's the only way to keep the hair in control. Forget that daily brushing crap. That's just an invitation for more to be set free . . . but I digress.

LOVE, LOVE Trinity!
