Buddy is our 8 week old tripawd (clubfoot) puppy! He is a golden retriever born right after Thanksgiving into a litter of 11! Buddy has been learning to run and walk and he tried his best to keep up with his brothers and sisters. We did notice he gets tired very quickly, but he has a big heart and does not give up. Recently I have worried about him on the stairs of our house. He can go up just fine but has been falling coming down. We try to get in front of him to "catch" him, but he is sneaky about going upstairs! He has started to accommodate his leg by "hugging" the wall as he comes down, I mean literally leaning on the wall of the staircase. This is working for him and I'm so proud! I know we will have many obstacles and we are thinking about a prosthetic in his future because he has a lot of leg that he wants to use but no "paw" at the end of it! I'm glad this forum is here and everyone seems to be very supportive and helpful.. I hope I'm posting this right!!!sf-laugh

He's a sweet little guy.  He will continue to find ways to adjust.  When we brought Trouble home after her amputation, she would lean against the wall to brace herself when she ate.  As she grew stronger, this stopped, but she found a way to make it work for her, and Buddy will too.

Good luck to the little guy as he grows and learns.

Perfect, thanks for sharing! Jerry also learned to lean against the wal as he hopped down stairs after his amputation. As a pup, Buddy will never know he's supposed to have a fourth leg. He'll grow  strong and do quite well, I'm sure.

Members can see pictures and follow his progress on Buddy's blog.

Oh my gosh!  What a cutie pie!

I feel a kinship.......

My Comet was born with a deformed leg, too.  I rescued her at 4 month-ish, so I don't know how she did at first.  But she did everything when I got her. She jets up the stairs and is very careful coming down.  She has never fallen (knock on wood).

I used to wonder about a fake leg, too but got over it after about 6 months of having her.   She's a senior now - over 11 years old.

Welcome!

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

He will do just fine! Thanks for the pictures! Really a good looking dog!

How is your little Buddy doing?  He is a cutie!!  You will be amazed at the instinct that will kick in for Buddy......he willl know what to do.  Try to be there to catch him if you can, or gate off the areas when you aren't around.  Our Paris also would hug the wall on the way down and she would walk along side of me.  For the first days after amputation we tried leashing her and holding her close, but she was faster than we were!!

I am so glad that you opened your home and your heart for your special Buddy.  Take care!!

Ginny & Angel Paris

Grateful for every moment we had with Paris…..no regrets!

Honoring her life by opening our hearts & home to Addy!
