Hello all, great site and forums. I was referred here by my vet because just recently my best friend Loki was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He's just turning 3 years old.
I've read a lot about osteosarcoma since, and although it doesn't look good, whatever, I'll do what I can and spoil my puppy rotten!
Loki has had previous problems in his back right leg, totally unrelated to the osteosarcoma. So when we got the x-rays for that, we were in complete shock. The good news out of all of that is, that because we had the x-rays taken for something else, we were able to catch this extremely early, our vet is sure of his diagnosis, even though according to the x-rays it was just starting to show..
Just brought the little dude home from his amp a few days ago, and it's already extremely difficult keeping him still so his stitches heal. I'm glad he's feeling good about the whole thing.
Things may seem dark, but we're happy, Loki's happy, and we're just hoping for the best right now. The only problem we're having are the medical bills. We've already maxed out our credit cards. And the reason why that scares me is because of the number our vet gave us.. We don't have money for anything else as of now.
Other than that though, I created an indiegogo campaign to raise money to help pay for his treatment, and so far there have been great results! I've also been browsing through this site and forum and was very pleased at how dogs can get around with just 3 legs! And judging already by his attitude he's a lot happier without that old bum leg of his!
I was looking at the meet ups section and I'm bummed I can't make it out to the Naperville dog park this sunday. Loki obviously can't make it until his stitches are out and he's a bit better. Maybe the next one though.
Thanks for reading!
Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not require moderation.
Loki is so young! While many pups are diagnosed later in life it seems lately we have seen more youngsters come here.
What kind of pup is Loki? Its hard to tell from the avatar picture.
We all understand the financial burden a cancer diagnosis brings. Don't feel bad if you can't afford everything the vets recommend. With cancer it doesn't matter anyway- sometimes no amount of money will effect what it chooses to do.
While the Tripawds site does not allow personal fundraising, the indiegogo site sounds like a really good idea, I don't think I've heard it talked about here before. I hope it works for you guys and maybe it will be a good option for other members- thanks for mentioning it.
It's true the stats most vets quote are quite dire- but that doesn't mean it applies to Loki. My pug Maggie lost a leg to mast cell cancer and her prognosis post amp was 6 to 9 months due to lymph node involvement. She lived almost 4 years and did not pass from mast cell cancer. Many pups here outlive their prognosis- there is always hope!
If you haven't already you might read through Jerry's Required Reading list, or download the ebook Three Legs and a Spare. Both are compilations of info from this site.
Sounds like he is doing great so far. More pictures would be welcome when you have a chance.

Hi Loki's mom! Welcome! I noticed that you mentioned a vet referred you and you appear to be close to Napervillle. Could you tell me which one? I dropped off some Tripawds.com literature to some vets in the Naperville area and I am curious to know the name. You can PM me if you want to keep it private. Also, did you make it out to Dog Days in Wheaton last Saturday? We had a Tripawds booth out there. I'm sorry that you have this diagnosis but we will do the best we can to help anywhere we can. Cadence just made it to her one year ampuversary and some have many more ampuversaries than that. So just remember although the text books say "doesn't look good", our furkids do not have an expiration date stamped on their behinds.

Cadence Faye: Born 10/30/04, stepped into our hearts 12/23/2004. Rear leg tumor found 7/24/11 by mom and dad, Xray on 7/25/11, Osteosarcoma suspected 7/26/11, amputation 7/29/11, Carboplatin started 8/23. Met free so far!
Hi to you and Loki - sorry you had to find us here. We also had a very young dog get OSA - she was only 15 mo.
As you'll see in my signature, we lost her in January - I hope that doesn't make you feel sad, because believe me the "extra" 15 months we got with her post-amp were amazing and wonderful. She was a total inspiration. She did pretty much everything post-amp that she did before. She was an amazing dog.
Once Loki is all healed up, he'll amaze and inspire you too! Try not to think too far ahead into the future and agonize about the 'what ifs' - just Be More Dog and enjoy every day, like Loki will!
We're here if you have questions during his recovery.
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
I can't add much but just wanted to say welcome to you and Loki. You have come to the right place for information and support. We will try to answer any questions that you have. You are not alone.

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. Hi Loki and Family,
Welcome to Tripawds, we're glad you found us. You have a great attitude about living life to the fullest despite the cancer, and this will carry you very, very far! Always remember that there are no "right" or "wrong" choices here . . . only the ones that work for your pack. No matter what treatment choices you pursue, or don't pursue, none come with a guarantee to beat the odds. So in the meantime, making the most of each and every day is the best thing you can do for eachother's hoppiness. You and Loki sound like you won't have any problem with that!
Please thank your vet for referring us. We would be hoppy to send their practice some business cards, so feel free to drop their name and we'll put some in the mail.
I hope you can make it to the next Naperville area gathering! Keep us posted on how you're doing, we're so glad you shared your story.
