Welcome Lycan! I'm a front leftie, too!  (I got the leg still - but it doesn't work)

Don't get me started on the gun shooting of dogs - you'll never shut me up! what-ever

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Gus here, count me in for left amputee, makes me feel normal, although anybody going by wouldn't know I'm missing a leg if I wasn't hopping so fast. Sounds like your doin' great. We pretty much let Gus do whatever he wanted from the start, he used the stairs the first night he was home, and at five weeks he was climbing up in the hay mows again. We don't tie him up so once he started feeling better he was out roaming the fields again, although he stayed a little closer to the house, but now he will go down the lane to check things out, but I will say he's a little more whipped when he gets back. You should see him dig with one front paw!!! Once Lycan gets past this part of the journey, you won't even know he's missing a leg, and he's even more unique now than he was before.  Paws up, Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Has anyone had any luck with feeding their tripawd pumpkin in order for them to pass solids? Lycan has only passed solids 3x since he has been home; it's been 8 days.ugh

no, when i've had a need to try to inspiring pooping...they wouldn't even consider the pumpkin.  my vet said ' just wait, it will happen when it happens...'  it did happen, eventually.  unfortunately, with the chemo, we've seen the other problem, where we're trying to firm up the poo.

good luck,  charon & gayle

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

We've used it in our family more for diarrhea than constipation, but for some reason it works for both issues. Metamucil will help too, as will steamed sweet potato and even a little bran cereal. Eight days is a long time, you might want to help things along.

Welcome Lycan - glad you found your way over from PBF. Still so sorry about your boy - but glad to hear he's going for walks and recovering OK. It might be all the meds he's on giving him some trouble with his bowels, so it can't hurt to try pumpkin, I've always had success with it for both diarrhea and constipation.

Boiled chicken and rice and water and/or canned food seemed to help Yoda when he had trouble with constipation after his amputation.

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com

My vet recommended pumpkin for constipation because it is full of fiber.  It worked.

Took him back to the vet today for pain when rising. She said he has phantom pains and prescribed Gabapentin and told me to feed him some pumpkin. Finally had a BM!

Yeay for BMs! WOoo hoo!!!!

I'm sure you'll see an improvement with the Gabapetin and the pumpkin should definitely help. Plus, it's yummy so that's a bonus.

Good luck, hopefully things will start moving along!

Staples came out today and the surgical site is nice and clean; they did a great job. However, he is still jumpy and cautious. I have to make it known that I am approaching him or he will get scared and start screaming, he is still a little down and out and he wakes up from what I think are nightmares; it makes me sad.

Oh, Lycan - we hope you are back to yourself soon!  Sometimes the meds can make our pups a little jumpy, although Holly wasn't ever on Gabapetin so I'm not sure if that med would.  We'll keep fingers and paws crossed that this passes and Lycan can relax.

Sending lots of hugs,
Holly, Zuzu and Susan

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Thanks for the update! Try to remain a strong pack leader for Lycan. If you are sad, he will be too. Work on rewarding his positive behavior and be sure to review the tips for managing phantom pain in dogs available in the Tripawds Downloads blog . You might also want to review the dog stretches and excercises recommended by Cal Animal Rehab in our three part video interview.
