Ooops, and I forgot to say her tumor was low-grade and the lymph nodes were good so they all feel good about taking the leg and not messing with the tumor.  We were so flipped out by the decision and I'm serious, if I hadn't read all these stories I'm not sure if we would have made the right choice.

Lily's story was in the newspaper this weekend.  Rene posted the link under Shout Outs. "Zen and the art of the three legged dog".  I can't post it myself because I have a wobbly (cerebellar hypoplasia) cat in my lap hassling me.  I know, I should listen more carefully when people explain the link-instruction to me!

What a great report! Lily, you are a superstar!

That's good to know about how your other dogs treated her. It's been a matter of much discussion and fretting by nervous pawrents here. Feel free to report back in and let us know if anything changes with the pack.

It makes our day to hear that the stories here helped others like you. And now, by sharing Lily's story here, you are now helping those who will join the Tripawd community after you. So thanks a bunch!

And here is the link again to the post about the article.

Thanks for doing all you do for the special animals in your life. You are a role model for us all!

Hi everyone,

Today is Day 13 and we are all pretty excited to be almost done.  We were able to get 2/3 of her staples out on Day 10 which was a little early but she was seeming uncomfortable and depressed.  It helped with the itching too.  She is so low-key when she's just lying around and it scares us that she's changed and hates us, etc., but Holy Snout, when something good is going on she is back!!  We've extended her walks to the end of the block and she says she's ready for a ten mile run.  Her favorite thing in the world, the running hose, turned her into an acrobatic circus dog.  So when all the staples are out, 2 days from now, we think she'll be back to normal.  It will be hard to explain to her that she's still not ready to run with my husband but soon she can walk with me and the 2 other slow dogs (old and small).  Her muscles are still sore from the readjustment and she tires easily.  This has been pretty trouble-free.  My cat's recovery from his urinary operation was much harder.  And now, when we come home, she brings us a stuffed animal or a bone, or some kind of gift, like she used to, and we worry she'll hurt her back from that insane pitbull wiggle.  What a beautiful sight!

A beautiful sight indeed. Sounds like all is going as good as can be expected, and you are in the right frame of mind for adjusting to life on three legs. Thanks for the update, keep up the good work!

Yahoo!  We are done!

It's almost 3 weeks, all the staples are out, and wow, you were all right- she seems completely normal!  The weird thing is our bad night was on day 13, when she had (the rest of) her staples taken out.  All of a sudden she would scream like she had just stepped on a tack, terrifying everyone.  She had some big, thick scabs, which hid some remaining staples.  We took her back 2 days later and they removed all the scabs and staples and scrubbed it clean and presto!

It really is such a miracle to go through all this and have it turn out OK.

Bed update (for those with under-the-covers hogs):  Lily sleeps under my covers, along with our smaller dog.  And yes, I also have 2 cats on my head and one who insists on being on my face.  (If you're not going to call social services, we have even more than these.)  So it's been harder with Lily under the covers because it takes her longer now to settle in which means I'm holding up the covers with my legs forever several times a night.  I had finally had it yesterday and we moved a spare twin bed into our room, next to our bed so Lily has her own bed, next to me, and we can still share the covers.  I think she realized it actually is better to not have my legs on her all night.  My face-cat even slept on the new bed.  What a beautiful new day it is, with me having hope for better sleep!

Thank you again everyone,

Jody

what a great success story! I love it. it's so great to be on the "other end" of surgery. looking forward to the end of the recovery period. Our only issue right now is when Marley wants to get up - she's hates being confined - and we feel we still need to help her with the sling in case she falls. (she is 12 so we worry..) Looking forward to making it down the street again too! We'll be joining Lily soon enough I hope...

Dogs are indeed miraculous aren't they? Thanks for the great update. Congratulations to Nester!

Hi everyone!

We are at 6 weeks now and it's like nothing happened.  Lily walks with me and two of our other dogs now, for 30 or 40 minute walks.  I wear a fanny pack and clip them all on to it so my hands are free.  It works really well and we rarely get tangled.

OK, Lily stays out in front, DRAGGING the three of us behind her, my stomach almost being ripped in half by the fanny pack, and when I beg her to slow down she can't understand me because I'm breathing so hard that I don't make sense.

Then, I can barely get her to turn around when it's time to head home because my husband used to take her much further.  I'm sure I look pretty mean out there, dragging my poor three-legged dog down the path until she accepts this horrendous fate.  And then she's back in front again, dragging us three hyperventilating losers behind her.

So for those who worry about their former athletes… You may be surprised!

Oh Silly Lilly! That is so cute! So now you see, there's no stopping Tripawds. We're faster than ever when we're out for a walk.

How's life at home with the other dogs? Is she OK around them when things get wild, like when the doorbell rigs and stuff?

Hi Everyone!

We are just about at 4 months and everything is still really good.  Lily will not slow down and sometimes we worry her muscles are sore but that is it.  She is so smiley and she sometimes looks like a seal.

Wow is she lucky because Penney, a student at The Boulder School of Massage Therapy, needed 3-legged dog patients to work on and, well, we have one!  Once a week her huge muscles get some serious attention.  The other dogs and cats always manage to have some kind of ailment that day that needs attention too.  It's really strange.

We met two other Tripawds last weekend at the Longmont Humane Society's benefit walk, who did the three mile walk, and two people who told us they had Tripawd cats.  Lily goofed around on the agility course and did a great job.

You all helped me so much during all of this.

Thanks!

Jody, so nice to hear from you and Lily, thank you for the update. What a lucky girl, having her own masseuse! Can you send her our way too? 😉

So hoppy to hear you met other Tripawds, I'll bet it was like a celebrity convention!
