Born January 30, 2007.
Dozer is a gentle giant, Saint Bernard. He was the product of a puppy mill breeder that was not breeding for the good of the breed, but for money. He was breeding puppies born with hip dysplasia, and unfortunately Dozer was born with bilateral hip dysplasia. He coolwas diagnosed at 6 months when he started to limp. His first owner returned him back to the breeder and exchanged him for a new puppy. Dozer had been neutered by this time and the breeder had no use for him and was going to shoot him. Fortunately he was rescued by an individual that concentrated on puppy mill rescues. She posted his profile on petfinders.com .

This is where we come in.

Chester our 3 year old saint died the day before Dozer was born. He was undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his back leg when he cardiac arrested on the table. They were unable to save him.

After some time we began to periodically check the pet finders site for that special dog. We still had 4 dogs and 2 cats, so we were not really looking for another dog; but, if one called out to us we would see what we could do.

I have always been partial to saints, having had one growing up I was wanting another one. Shaun caught my bug and began looking also. One day I came home from work to see him crying in front of the computer reading Dozer's profile and story. I read it a knew we had to have him and began calling the rescue shelter.

One October day we started out on the long drive to get him. The second we saw him we knew we had made the right decision. We quickly got him to our vet for evaluation and we were referred to the specialist for a right total hip replacement/reconstruction. Dozer's right hip was completely eroded and out of the socket. He could not walk without dragging that foot. His Left hip was not great but was good in comparison. At 10 months of age he underwent this first surgery. There was a prolonged recovery, as he was treated with kid gloves- always on leash, never out unattended, etc. He did very well for about 2 1/2 years. In fact he grew to be taller than the breed standard. But he was lonely as far as doggie friends were concerned. We were never able to let him run and play with our other dogs because of possible hip dislocation.

February 2010 we found Maggie. These 2 were a match from the start, they bonded immediately. And have really been inseparable since. However, we started to notice that Dozer was getting a limp with a rotation in the right back leg when he walked. He fatigued a lot faster and fell down more. (He was never really very graceful) Another trip to the orthopedic vet showed his right hip was dislocated. He had outgrown the prosthetic and came out of socket. He was scheduled for a revision to the hip- an extension with a bigger ball to place in the socket. No big deal we thought.

He did great with that surgery for a bout 2 weeks. He developed a fluid filled pocket called a seroma over the hip joint. Again no big deal, this happened with the first surgery. The vet drained the fluid and placed two drains to relieve the pressure from the hip and allow more fluid to drain until it stopped. Unfortunately Dozer is an obsessive licker and dislocated his hip. They were able to successfully do a closed reduction and pop it back into place. This was the start of his downfall. The surgical incision opened up several times, developed several infections, more drains, and more pain. November 2010 was particularly memorable because we came home one afternoon to find that he had licked so obsessively at the drains that he filled his stomach full of air and bloated. On a aid note there had been an incident of bloat- partially in January 2010 but he vomited in the car on the way to the emergency vet and relieved the pressure. This time however was a complete torsion of the stomach. We were able to get his to the emergency vet again, in time for them to decompress his stomach and prep him for surgery. His stomach was tacked to the abdominal wall to prevent flipping. He made it through this with flying colors. No complications, no arrthymias, or set backs. Besides being so spoiled he would not eat for the staff, so I had to make a trip there on my lunch break to feed him so he could come home.
But the hip continued to be a problem. He was limping so badly and dragging the right foot that his nails were worn past the quick and would bleed.
March 22, 2011 he underwent surgery to remove the hip prosthesis and associated hardware. This turned into a prolonged surgery because the femur had to be fractured to remove the bone cement and wired back together. Again, the trooper that he is, recovered from anesthesia without issues. But he was in pain, slow to be able to move and did not want to eat much. March 25, 2011 he was still at the orthopedic vets. I went to visit. He looked good, bright eyed, attentive and started eating. The plan was to keep him over the weekend, get his meds down to one pain med and bring him home possibly Monday.
When Monday came around we had a different story. Dozer had fallen Sunday afternoon and crushed what was left of his femur and he was bleeding from the incision.
After many tears, phone calls and intense conversations about possibilities and prognosis' we made the decision to amputate Dozer's right hind leg.
This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He was up moving around within hours and able to come home Tuesday March 29, 2011.
Since that time he has been unstoppable. Stealing Maggie's bone, wanting to play and be with his people. He still has a long way to go for recovery- he is unsteady, slips and lands on his butt, tries to go to fast, licks at his incision licking the staples out, and has more drains causing us to have blanket and towels everywhere he might lay down.
But this is nothing to have him home and happy. Most importantly free of PAIN.

This is Bud. He is a large golden.

He is also a tripawd because of a bad hip, failed replacement and femur fracture.

We are a little over a month in the recovery process. We are still having triumphs and set backs.

Bud fell and hurt his remaining knee and hip. He is on a diet and we will follow up with a knee brace as a prevenative measure. He also batteling  skin infection.

We hope Dozer does very well in his recovery. Slow and steady!

Healing wishes for him and a hang in there for you!

Welcome to the family, even though your in for a possible rough couple weeks, the nice thng is your not dealing with cancer, so once healed Dozer should be in great shape. I sure hope his left hip stays good for him, those guys are big dogs. You got my attention right away, we've had 2 Saints over the years, I just love those things, courtesy of my daughter was how we got our second one, and also because of her we ended up with Gus, kids, their all heart sometimes. I think I would try to make sure he doesn't lick anymore of the staples out, you don't want the incision opening back up if he falls, although i don't know how easy that can happen, but I'd feel better knowing they were all there. Our vet told us to try to keep Gus calm for a couple weeks, I know, easier said than done, but he was concerned with fluid buildup with alot of activity, although it's great Dozer is feeling so good this soon. Don't get to worried if you see ups and down, pretty normal at this stage, might not even be himself at times but some recover better than others, maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones. Keep us posted, kudos to you guys for taking him in, great story. Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Thanks for sharing Dozer's story here.

Maybe you can start a sub-club with Bud for 'rear amps because of bad hip and fractured femur', that would be BHFF.  Humm, maybe that needs some work smiley.

Looking forward to following Dozer's progress.

Talk about feeling right at home.  Dog people are the best, and those with special needs are the bestest.   For all concerned I am going to staple dozer's open incision- where he licked to staples out- closed again.  This one spot is a problem,  as it is a high friction area, as well as over the biggest muscled area- high strain.  I am a Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner that is also the medical provider for the wound clinic so this is in my area.  I have a trick up my sleeve on keeping it covered.  But Dozer has some industrial strength slobber I'd like to market as adhesive remover.

I really appreciate the heads up on what to expect and words of wisdom. My rational brain knows these things but sometimes it's hard to remember. I hate it when my furry babies are sick or injured.  You can't really explain what is going on and why you're doing something.

It is a good idea about the sub-club for rear leg amputees from injury and dysplasia as each group has it's own set of problems.

For example: We have considered stem cell for the left hip.  Has any one done this?  Also, our vet recommended an injection that historicallly has been used on retired race horses for arthritis, has the precursors to lubricate the joints.  Bur first things first.  Dozer has to heal up.  The snot tried to head for the creek this morning.  Like he thinks I'm going to let that happen.

I'll be glad when he is strong enough that I can walk him and Maggie together again.  She's feeling left out despite the extra attention she has had.

Dozer, you are my hero! Wow. You've been through so much and you're still loving life to the fullest. Wowwweeee!

Thank you so much for joining us here. I know your story will bring so much hope to other giant three legged heroes. Your Mom is right; first things first, heal up and then let's talk supplements, etc.

Meanwhile we'd love to hear what her trick up her sleeve is for preventing you from bothering the incision.

Be good Dozer, don't bug your stitches and they wont' bug you! Keep us posted OK?

We re-stapled the incision, skin adhesive with steri-strips and waterproof tape.  So there are a couple of layers to work thru before getting to the staples.  It stayed in place until a few minutes ago.  Persistence also.

LOL, I'm glad you clarified cuz I was picturing you with the office depot stapler!!! hahaha

If my mom came at me with that, I would run faster than she thought imaginable on these 3 legs!!!!

So happy to hear Dozer is making great progress. And I agree, kudos for giving him a GREAT home with people who apparently really love him 🙂

Keep us posted….

This is Dozer's dad.  As you can see in his last post above - he was NOT happy the other night LOL.

In Dozer terms that means he was restless and couldn't get settled, or maybe the one look of discomfort during the 4th restaple - in most dogs terms it would mean a muzzle.

He is such a sweetie, he literally laid there while Renee stapled him as he and I shared a bone.  Yes, I am his people dad - and yes we shared a bone laugh

What a wonderful story.  What a wonderful family Dozer has found in you guys!  Bless you!

(is it okay if we "shoot" the puppy mill owner?)

I know you guys have been through a lot.  I think you two are handling the stress so well.  I fretted and stressed over having knee surgeries (both back ones) on my Comet who was born with a front deformed leg.  She came from a hoarder.  I think once Dozer gets healed, the three leggedness of Dozer is going to relieve so much worry!

I can't wait to hear more, it sounds like Dozer is going to finally be free to be himself!  YAY!

DOZER DAD:  HINT-  Try reuploading your avatar pic BUT use the "alternative upload" button.  Sometimes using the regular upload makes the pic a solid black.

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

FYI... Other things that can cause the black avatar include:

Invalid file format, only jpeg (recommended) or png are allowed.

Image is too small, must be at least 128x128

File is too large, anything over 200kb is overkill.

We just reset Dozer's avatar to the default. If you problems persist post in the tech support forum, or send a photo and we can make it your avatar.
