Emma was born July 4, 2006. Her mom was a black cocker spaniel and her dad was a black lab. She looks exactly like a miniature lab. About 9 months ago we got Emma a yellow lab boyfriend puppy named Sampson. They have been inseperable and are so in love with each other.
Emma and Sam managed to dig out of our yard on Thursday January 14 2010. She was hit in front of our house by a nice lady who called me at work crying her eyes out. The cops took her to our vet, who said her leg was broken badly, and they wouldn't be able to amputate or try to repair until Monday. When my husband went in to talk to them they were very rude about us not having the $1,000 to have the procedure done. My husband has been laid off of work for 9+ months and we're barely making it on my preschool teacher paycheck. The vet told my husband that we should just have her put to sleep since we didn't have the money. My husband carried her out to the van and took her to another vet who agreed to work with us on the payment. They were nothing but sweet. So Emma had her right front leg amputated on Thursday afternoon and came home late Friday afternoon. She seems to be recovering well and is a great little patient! The only issue is her being apart from Sampson. The vet recommended limited contact for a while while she heals. So happy to have found the tripawds site and to have all your useful knowledge and experience. Thanks so much!
Jennifer and Emma
Ohhh, so sorry to hear about that rotten experience with your regular vet. Way to go Emma's dad for marching out of there to another vet! Great job BOTH of you for doing your darnedest for her in these tough times. Many of us here can relate as many of the tripawds here are dealing with cancer and their people often have to make really tough treatment decisions based on finances.
I had Yoda before Gerry, and he had bone cancer, and I was really cutting it close, especially since I knew my employer was in trouble and, at the least, there would be more layoffs coming. I got lucky and landed a good new job just in time. A month later, most of my former co-workers were laid off and a month after that the whole place closed.
I wish you all the luck I had and MORE on the job front! Have your dogs cross their paws and hang in there. At least Sampson is good medicine for Emma for which you won't have to pay anything extra when she's ready to come home.
Yoda was a front right leg amputee as well and he did wonderfully right from the start! Results vary, but with motivation like playing with Sampson, I'm sure she'll do great!!
The first two weeks after the amputation can be pretty rough though with plenty of ups and downs. The pain meds can really mess with their heads, for one thing. Hopefully this new vet will be open to having you call in with questions, because I highly recommend that. But you've also got loads of experience here at Tripawds to ask, "Is this normal?" And eventually you'll be past the two-week nerve-wracking recovery phase. Gerry went to the park today, for example, and he's only a month and two days past his amputation. Yoda too was back at the park a month after his amputation. No one at the park either time could believe it because they were running their tails of like they were born on three legs!
Welcome Jennifer and Emma!
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.
Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com
Welcome Emma and family
You certainly sound well on-track to have figured out the vet and amputation situation the same day your poor pup had a horrible accident. That's amazing but terrific. It sounds as though Emma will do just fine. Most of our dogs have bone cancer but there are dogs here for lots of other reasons. This is a great place to find information and support.
Yoda! I knew your Mom started a new job but I hadn't heard all the details about her previous employer! Your Mum is smart!
Welcome Emma! I'm sure you are still overwhelmed with all the abrupt changes you faced. Kudos for giving Emma a chance even though the finances are tight. You will be rewarded many times over. The dogs are amazing and the pawrents you meet here will blow you away. Keep us posted and don't hesitate to ask questions. Someone is always around to bounce ideas off of.

What kind of jaded vet would suggest death over life because of money!!!!!!!????? Good grief. I'm glad you were able to get a vet to work with you. I'm glad you found this site! Good news...it's free!
Good luck with your baby. And good luck in finding employment for your husband soon.
P.s. You can try CareCredit if you feel like you need an emergency credit card. Most vets and doctors take it and it seems they offer easy approval. You can apply online and will know in a few minutes. It is just for medical stuff.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Hi Jennifer & Emma, Glad that you found another caring vet who was willing to work out something. I just shook my head when I read how cold and blunt these so-called professionals were.
Given that Emma is so young, she will adjust it well. She will be up bouncing, hopping in no time!.
Wish Emma a speedy recovery!
So glad that you and Emma found your way here, you won't find a better support group!! I am so glad you loved Emma enough to find a vet who had their heart in the right place!! Please keep us posted to her journey. I hope Sampson and Emma get to be together soon...

Wow I just realized that you are not too far away from me. I am in Eugene area...

Awesome husband! Way to march out on that vet. I would also be writing up a review on Yelp and city search about that vet.
You will find a lot of support and information here at Tripawds. Please post all your questions! And when you have time, start a blog and let us see pictures of the two dogs....we are nutty about pictures around here!

May 2001-Jan 21, 2010.....I'm a dog and I'm AWESOME!..... Always.
Welcome Jennifer and Emma,
I'm so sorry to hear about Emma's accident and amputation... but I'm happy that you were able to find a vet who would let you do payment plans. Unfortunately, most vets don't do this, and I was also very lucky to have a vet that made an exception in my case as well... Glad that Emma is recovery well... Looking forward to hearing more updates (and maybe some pictures) of your baby!!!
Angel Jake's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Welcome Emma & Jennifer!
I had to pay for Maggie's amputation with CareCredit...no interest for the first 12 months. GREAT option for those that need it for sure.
Sounds like it's a good thing your hubby marched right out of that vet's office. Compassion...what happened to compassion? Jerk...wouldn't be getting any more of my money to work on my animals !
Hope Emma's next couple of weeks go well...she will probably bounce right back faster than those of us that have cancer to deal with?
Tripawds is a great support system!

Jennifer--I'm sorry you have to be here, but glad you found us! My Cemil lost his left front leg almost a year ago because of cancer and I'm finding that having to make decisions based on finances is pretty tough. Lucky you to find a vet who will work with you!
Looking forward to reading about Emma's recovery milestones, and seeing pictures!!

I, too, and so sorry about Emma's accident and your bad experiece with the first vet. It really does suck to have to make decisions based on finances. I hope your husband is able to find a job soon. It is hard with this economy. I am a preschool teacher also so I applaud you for keeping a family together on your salary!
Like others said the first two weeks can be hard. All dogs adjust differently. Try to not panic about everything. (Yeah right). Anyway, welcome to tripawds. Maybe Emma and Sampson could have supervised visits. I think it would feed her soul.

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
Welcome Emma and Family! We are glad that you are with us. I joined the site about a month ago and have found it to be one of the most resourceful sites for three legged dogs out there. Since finding the site, I even adopted an additional tripawd because I knew that I could do it and if I ever had any questions I always have this website. Jedi was hit by a car about a month ago at 5 months of age. It's been just over a month since the surgery and he is recovering very well. Just stay positive and never let your Emma see that you are sad or scared. Also, if Sampson means so much to Emma, I would suggest that they see each other at least a little each day, it can be a form of therapy for Emma, and Sampson is going to learn to take care of Emma.
