I am from northern Minnesota and I have a four year old male Great Dane. I noticed in mid October that he had a slight limp and some swelling in his front left wrist area. I initially considered it to be a fracture as we were previously at the park playing.

We had an x-ray done and it showed signs of either osteosarcoma, bacterial or fungal infection in the bone. A bone biopsy was performed a few weeks later (at no fault of the vet but because financially I could not afford the cost of a bone biopsy and had to save $ for the procedure).

It took a bit longer to get the results back because of the size and density of the bone. Two pathologists could not confirm osteosarcoma because it could be too early on in the disease. Since the biopsy his swelling has grown immensely - to the size of a baseball if not bigger. The vet was concerned of this and referred us to an oncologist. I am still waiting to get a call from them to consult on treatment options and cost.

Amputation was discussed as an option from my veterinarian as I already know I won’t be able to afford the cost of treatment. My fur baby does not use or put any pressure whatsoever on his leg so I feel like he may be okay as a “tripawd”. Though cost still plays a factor in that category.

Would anyone have any idea where to begin to look for financial assistance for such instances? Any advice or ideas are welcomed!

Hi Ami and welcome.

I'm sorry you are dealing with these decisions for your boy. What is his name?

Note that we do not allow fundraising on this site- I know you didn't ask but while wearing my Moderator hat I feel obliged to mention smiley4

Here are a couple links with financial assistance ideas:

Hi Ami, welcome. I'm sorry about your pup. Sorry the tumor is growing so fast, it does sound like he's in pain if he's walking on 3.

Stay on top of that oncologist and call them every day to see if there's been any cancellations so you can get your dog in asap. You don't want that leg to fracture. Even if you can't do oncology treatment, even just doing amputation will give him more quality time and pain-free time too. Have you talked to your regular vet about just doing an amputation surgery? If they know of your financial situation they may be able to provide some level of care so that your pup won't be in pain. Talk to the practice manager to see if they're willing to work with you.

Also, see if you qualify for the Tripawds Foundation ASAP Program for help with surgery costs.
