They all heal at different rates.  Chuy will catch up with everyone else 🙂  Angel is just awesome, she has more spunk about her than most.

We visited Angel yesterday and will take her home today.  She was still sleepy from the drugs.  She tried to stand on her leg and cried.  She's been through so much.  They put a metal plate and 6 screws in her pelvis.  There was a Y-shaped break right on the cup that holds the head of femur.  She has a 3 inch incision there and they closed up the smaller flesh wound with staples.  They can bend her leg without hurting her and they say she'll have full range of motion after everything heals.  I can't believe everything she's been through.  She also faces the amputation in a few weeks and wound care every few days at the hospital.  They're going to try close the large wound as much as they can, but are waiting til the wound is in the best shape possible so they don't close in any infection.

It has now been 2 weeks since the accident.  I am wondering if I made the best decision for her after all these surgeries and more to come.  Of course we're not turning back now.  She's a fighter and wants to live.  I would take all her pain if I could.  It breaks my heart.  The total bill for what has been done so far is $7700.  We've taken out a personal loan and racked up the credit cards b/c we don't have any money in savings (we just bought a house in December).  But my mom always says 'you can't take it with you' and even though money will be tight for next 2 years I'd hate myself if we didn't try everything possible to save Angel.  And knowing the possibility of her surviving, I couldn't let her go.  I love her so much.  I know she'll die sometime but I don't want to lose her yet.  When we didn't know in those first few days if she would live, I just wanted to go to sleep forever it hurt so much.  But I had to be strong for our 5 other fur babies.

I'll let ya'll know how she does tonight.  Also I need some advice- I plan on taking off work tomorrow so will have 3 days with her.  She can't get around on her own yet, so should I take off more next week?

Oh wow - I'm just getting all caught up on Angel...I cannot believe what you and her have been through. What a gift you have been to her and as you said, her to you. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers and send lots of healing energy your way.

To answer your question - it's hard to say how much time off you should take from work - it depends on so many factors - will she be completely alone? Can you come home a couple times during the day to check on her? Do you have a crate for her where she sleeps during the day? Will it jeapordize your job if you do take some additional time off? I made arrangements for Zeus to not be alone for 2 weeks after his amputation. I took about 5 days off and then my Dad stayed at my house with him for the rest of the time. I know I felt better knowing that someone was always there for him until he was 100% able to manage on his own. Can you play it by ear or do you have to request the time now?

I hope she continues to amaze us all and do well in her recovery. Make sure you get some rest too OK? It's also important for the pawrents to get some rest too - we do so much better taking care of our fur babies when we have had some good rest.

We're sending love and prayers -

Keep us posted,

Love Heather and Zeus

Thank you.  We need everyone's prayers through all this.  I have a lot of sick time accrued but I'm scared to use it then get called out on it.  I'm coming to work Saturday for 1/2 day and worked all day last Saturday (to prepare for Angel coming home), so I have some comp time.  I have almost 4 days of vacation.  I'm thinking of doing 1/2 days next week using my vacation.  Then my husband is done teaching after next week and will be with her all day.  The ladies in the office are not nice people and I get crap from them if I'm actually sick and stay home!  My husband says to ignore them, they give everyone crap.  We'll figure it out so she won't be alone for too long at a time.

I'm so happy she's coming home but feel overwhelmed with everything.  God, my hubby and all of you are my support; God knows I'm not strong enough to do it alone.  I heard  there's a chat this Saturday night, I really hope to get on that.

I can't thank ya'll enough (can you tell we're in Texas!).  God bless you.

I agree with your husband, to heck with those ladies at work.  If they don't understand that Angel is a member of your family, they've never really loved anyone.  Take the time you need to be with her until your husband can stay home.  It can be overwhelming at times, do make sure you get your rest too.  Angel needs you to be strong for her, remember she can sense how you are feeling.

We're here for you too!

Hi ya'll,

My little Angel is home!  She is doing really well.  I think she feels better now that her pelvis is repaired even though she has a 3 inch incision.  I can move her leg a bit and she doesn't even notice.  Before it got fixed if I accidentally touched it she would cry.  She's trying to scoot around on her stump.  The doc said to keep her quiet so her pelvis can heal, but little Angel wants to walk around so bad!  The doc said the large wound on her side in 1/2 it's original size!  It's healing from the outside in.  He thinks they won't have to graft anything, just staple it shut later.  She's doing so well he wants to do the amputation at the end of next week.  When we got home yesterday I held up rear and she peepeed.  Then she plopped down in the grass and even got belly up for a few seconds!  Last night she even pooped while I held her rear up.  My hubby's bring her in tomorrow for bandage change, then we'll have to see the schedule after that.

I can't stop looking at her sweet little face.  It is a miracle she is alive.  I didn't want to tell ya'll this because we look like horrible parents.  But 3 weeks before the car accident she was attacked by a neighbor's dog running loose.  Angel had squeezed through the driveway gate.  (We just bought a house on 2 acres and had to re-fence it and have been patching so many areas that the dogs can squeeze through.)  She had 2 bite wounds on each side of her belly.  They opened both up at the ER and found that one had gone through the abdominal wall, but hadn't puctured any organs.  After that we had to watch and wait for infection, cause infection inside the abdominal cavity can easily kill.  But she made it through that and now this.

I believe God spared her for some reason.  Actually most of my answered prayers have been about dogs.  We were trying to adopt a senior schnauzer girl from the pound but they rejected us b/c our vet records were scattered over 3 counties (we've moved twice and go to whatever 'low-cost' clinic is neaby for regular shots, neutering, etc unless they get sick we go to our regular vet).  Anyway, we were fighting the pound's decision and our vet said she would call them on our behalf.  I was so upset and was praying that we'd get that girl.  The next day was the day Angel got attacked.  Maybe God knew we'd have to put all our time and energy and money into Angel and that's why we didn't get the schnauzer.

I want to get Angel into being a therapy dog for amputees and even burn victims (since she'll have a huge scar and no hair where she lost the skin flap).  She loves people and maybe that is her calling.  Anyway, she has taught ME a lot and is such blessing.

Thank you all so much for your comforting words.  I'll send a few pics of my little Angel. And see you tomorrow at the chat!

God bless you

Hi everyone,

My hubby took Angel to the vet to get her bandages changed.  The doc said 1 more little peice of the skin flap is dying, but that's OK.  He said she's doing so good, he wants to do the amputation Monday or Tues!  She just amazes me.  She likes to sit outside for a bit, then when she gets tired I bring her in.  She hasn't cried at all and is putting a little weight on her new hip.  We just try to keep her quiet and keep her from licking her wounds.  I found out she likes hamburger with rice, but only if it's mixed up.  She really likes mashed potatoes and chicken.  She shared some of Brandon's breakfast burrito this morning.  Whatever dog(s) are with us when we feed Angel get the benefit of sharing her food, so they are pretty happy about that!  Well, I'll let ya'll know what happens!

Hi Everyone!

Angel came home yesterday.  Yeaaaah!   She is doing soooo good.  They amputated her right rear leg mid-femur.  They didn't staple her wound shut (on her side) bc they think it will continue to heal from the outside in.  So we'll be bringing her in every 2-3 days for bandage changes.  Her stump looks good, just a lot of fluid collected there.  They sent her home with a little cart.  But my hubby picked her up and I can't figure out how they got her in the cart!  She has strict orders not the use the leg that had surgery on it last week (broken pelvis).  She can use her cart twice a day for 10-15 minutes.  She has been a little groggy, but when she's awake she's alert.  She seems very comfortable and will lay on both sides.  (I was worried about which side she'd lay on cause one's the pelvis/hip surgery and the other's the amputation.)  She's doing better than I could have imagined.

I emailed the vet at the ER bc he had taken some pics of her that 1st night.  I got them yesterday.  They are horrendous.  I don't know how she survived.  The skin that was torn off was about 6x8  inches (on a tiny poodle!).   Her little paw was twisted off and hanging by skin.  She's my miracle girl.

I'll send in a few pics of her and her new tripawdness!

Love and prayers to you all!
