Hello everyone!! I’m excited to have found a forum for tripods as I recently became an owner of one so here’s her story. Sorry if it’s long but thank you for reading on.
A little bit of my background first. I’m a vet tech at a small animal clinic. I love my job & the people I work with, we’re a close family. Unfortunately we work in a poor area where we see a lot of animal neglect, abuse & people who can’t afford much. So naturally a majority of us at the clinic have come home with a sick & unwanted pet that a previous owner wanted to euthanize.
In August we had a client come in with their 3 year old Cane Corso. They kept the dog chained up outside 24/7. At one time in March or even before then, she was attacked by another dog who bit her right front leg. This went unnoticed until the owner took her to a vet in April because she was limping. They did xrays & found that she had developed osteomyelitis (a bone infection). They put her on antibiotics and wanted to see her back in a couple weeks to see if she was improving. Fast forward to August, the owner never took her back to the vet so this had now been going on for 4 months. She came to us limping, she couldn’t put weight on her leg at all. She had several open wounds that had pus running down her leg. We gave them their options, treat it aggressively with antibiotics, therapy etc, amputate the leg or euthanize. They didn’t want to do any of those options (were absolutely appalled at having a 3 legged dog)& asked if we knew a shelter that would take her. So I step in & have them surrender her to me so I can treat her. I happen to love Cane Corsos as I already have 2. They didn’t even want to say goodbye to her, not even the kid.
So we try to save the leg at first. I did everything possible, cultures, drains, antibiotics, pain meds, injections, water therapy, lite therapy etc. At times it seemed like it was getting better, she was even able to walk on it again. Through it all, she was so sweet and tolerant even though I knew she was in a lot of pain. But in the end, her bone became too weak & was on the verge of breaking so at the end of October we decided to amputate.
When I first took her home she was terrified of other dogs, would attack any dog that got within 10 feet of her. She didn’t know what stairs were, scared of being indoors, basically didn’t know what being a dog was. With just some TLC, patience & love I got her over all of it. So I now own a 3 legged dog who is the sweetest, friendliest, happiest dog you will ever meet. She now runs around with her sisters playing, loves sleeping on her bed & being wherever we are. She gets to go to work with me everyday & has become our mascot as we all love her
Artemis and furmily, welcome. Bless your heart you are a saint! Thank you for taking her under your wing and helping her get to a place where she can enjoy the world as she was meant to. Vet techs ROCK! She sounds like a terrific girl and you were clearly her destiny.
We see quite a few Tripawds around here who lost a leg for very similar reasons. Our Wyatt Ray was a Tripawd by neglect / owner surrender case to a vet clinic. Many dogs here have gone through that terrible situation. Thank dog for awesome vet professionals like you with giant, compassionate hearts. You are such a gift in this world!
Hey speaking of vet clinics, did you know that we have Tripawds Outreach Brochures that are free to vet clinics? Yep! We would love to send some to you so please feel free to fill out the request form or message me your contact info.
Got any photos you want to share? Adding images to the forums isn't too hard but if you'd like help let me know. Can't wait to see 'em!

Welcome to the TRIPAWD family. Artemis has found his furever home and family. Its great that an awful situation like this turns into a positive one. We adopted Maggie after she was rescued and losing her right front leg. The amazing thing is, they do not hold any grudges towards us and just give unconditional love. It has been 2 1/2 years since we brought Maggie home and I am amazed how she gets around and is just a dog at heart. Artemis is going to give you all much joy and love for many years.

Thank you for adopting/rescuing her. Sometimes I am ashamed to call myself a human. But what you did reminds me, there are good people out there! I truly believe that you can find good in anything. Even though your girl started life in a horrible condition, because of that, she found you, where she belongs. She is one lucky dog! Would love to see more pics.
Nancy and Angel Brownie
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!
