Hello all
So glad I found this site. My dear sweet Sophie, 81/2 year old Flat Coat retriever, began limping on her front left leg at the end of May. Took her to 2 vets, series of 3 to 4 x-raays, started her on Cosequin, Rimadyl, etc. until the Orthopedic Vet specialist diagnosed her with bone cancer on July 3rd. She had her leg and shoulder amputation on July 9th and I brought her home on Friday, July 13th. Waiting for the pathology report but likely osteosarcoma. Although I am so very sad that my sweet Sophie had to undergo such an extreme procedure, she is managing to walk, go up and down 3 stair steps to get to the back and front yards. She is on Tramadol, Rimadyl, Cephlexin (sp?) for a slighty elevated temperature, post surgery and her incision/staples appear red but clean and healing.
She is mosty resting during the day, have some trouble maneuvering the hardwood floors (I've placed lots of area rugs for her to maneuever, and I am sleeping on the couch with her in the living room since our rooms are normally upstairs. She is 51 to 53 lbs and I do not trust the steep stairs or my ability to carry her .
Just wanted to share my story as I await the "next steps" of chemo. Although her chest x-rays and abdominal ultrasound were clear, I know enough about cancer that uncertainties still lie ahead. Comfort, quality of life, and freedom from pain are my goal with sweet Sophie.
Hi Sophie's Mom, thanks for joining us (your future posts won't require moderation).
I'm very sorry that you even had to look for a place like this; cancer is a very emotional journey for both the patient and the human, but the good news is, dogs take this situation much better than their humans do. Follow Sophie's lead and you'll see that the only thing that matters to her is that she feels good, out of pain, and get to spend quality time with her pack. It's funny how cancer really shows you what's important in life, just when you thought there was no value in it at all. Cancer still sucks, plain and simple, but it does give humans a new perspective on living. As we like to say "Be More Dog " and you'll find this journey to be a lot easier.
You have a terrific attitude already, and are to be commended for getting your house "tripawd-proofed." If there is anything we can do to make your journey smoother, let us know, we're here to help.
And when you get a chance, post some pics, we'd love to see what your pretty girl looks like!

Welcome Sophie's mum. You have certainly come to the right site for advice and support. Sleep is good. Magnum didn't really start to be herself until she came off the Tramadol, about 3 weeks after the amp.
Karen and Spirit Magnum
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
Welcome to you and Sophie. Sorry you had to find us here, but you'll be glad you did.
Once she is fully recovered, you'll see how awesome it is to be a Tripawd Pawrent. Keep us posted, and we're here if you have any questions during her recovery.
Hang in there and focus on spending lots of good quality time together.
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Hello Sophie and Sophie's Mom! You will be amazed how quickly Sophie will back up to her old tricks! We are nearly five weeks post op and those first few days of sleeping on the couch with her downstairs seem a long time ago! she is back at the top of the stairs at night time now and has no trouble at all on them Good luck to Sophie for speedy recovery.
