Tomorrow 9/27/17 will be ONE MONTH POST OP. Ruby is almost 3 years old and I had just received her into my life in May of this year. I rehomed her because my niece couldn't keep her on the farm killing other animals with her high prey drive. I picked Ruby up, very excited and proud to have this beautiful GSD in my life. She is a magnificent dog. She went around town with me to Doctor appts, bank, post office, stores, out for walks...she was such a steady good walker. I have an invisible disability and use the aid of a Service dog, mine are self trained. I was getting her used to helping me by giving her a job to do and then... well... Anyhow... let's skip to why we are now here, on this website and posting in the forums/blog.
I saw a small lump on Ruby's left stifle knee. I took her to the Vet on 7/17/17 and it had tripled in size, like a baseball. 7/27/17 Ruby had her first surgery to find out what was growing. They sedated her and then didn't really know what to do. The extracted some fluid and sent it off for culture. It came back showing signs of hemorrhage, but they were baffled. Kept treating it with novox and sent her home. The mass kept growing and getting bigger. Seemed like the size of a volleyball. I took her back to get a new opinion at a different animal hospital and that Vet owned the office my first Vet was in. So he ended up referring us to another hospital in a City beside us that had a Specialist to see Ruby's knee.
We ended up doing another surgery on her, this time to biopsy and culture again. I asked her to take the leg off during this surgery and was told that was a drastic solution for an unknown ailment because she was using the leg just fine. I couldn't afford all these medical bills and knew that the current surgery would be the last one I could get for her. I am low income, single, mother of one son, 4 dogs and 2 fish. My job is minimum wage. Those two surgeries were $1700, not including misc. other items I purchased to accommodate her better. So... the Vet did not want to remove the leg until they knew what it was. It turned out to be soft tissue cancer. I know there is a work for that, but I can not remember it and I always explain it as "soft tissue" because that is how it was described to me. She suggested we amputate the leg. I knew I could not afford to do another surgery. I couldn't afford the first two, really and I maxed my credit cards paying for those. My friend started a gofundme and over that weekend we raised $365 in donations from really kind friends, family and strangers. I still, knew it wasn't enough. The amputation price was quoted at $2,200. On 8/28/17 I went to the Vet to put my dog down because I couldn't afford to save her life. I was teary eyed and could hardly even speak when we all three got into the room together and I told her I couldn't afford the procedure. To my surprise she offered me a more affordable way to have the amputation done. Less than half of the cost of her price. Ruby was going to be saved!!! I was in such shock I didn't even know how to respond. I just didn't know what to say other than "please".
Ruby stayed with them and left for to get an amputation at a Vet I never met, in another City, far from where I am located. Her leg was removed on 8/30/17. She had a very difficult time during and after the procedure. She is still having a difficult time, as well. If anything could go wrong, it did. Ruby almost died once or twice thru this process. She is a heavy, heavy bleeder. She needed doner dog blood to keep her going a couple of times. She was opened, chopped off, closed and then reopened to make sure she was all good on the inside. She kept bleeding and seepage. She had pressure wraps on her... She remained in the hospital for two weeks or more. It seems like forever.
These past two months have went by in a blur and we are still trying to figure it all out. What happened so fast. Goodness knows. Finally, Ruby came home and she still had seepage, but the Vet had faith that I could handle keeping her cleaned up. And yes, I was able to. It took forever. We went back to the vet once to get the staples and stitches removed, but she kept them in for two more weeks. The seepage would not stop. She wasn't healing the greatest, but we kept giving it more time.
Last night, I took her to the hospital to finally have the staples removed only to end up leaving her there to have another surgery, to repair and restitch the incision... again. Poor poor Ruby. She has a wrap on her stump and she is in so much pain. It's going to be a long night for us tonight, as I lay out here beside until the morning when I can take her somewhere and get the wrap off. I made her an appt to go the local Vet and have him remove this wrap, but that isn't until 2:30 pm. I think I should take her in the morning instead, to the City beside me and have it removed.
I kind of ran thru Ruby's story there, in a nutshell. It gets more intricate, but it was a lot to type. I'm anxious to get her story started and out here on the forums. I have been keeping a blog about her and just decided to venture in over here. I didn't think this would be so prolonged for Ruby. I expected her to be well by now. I feel like we just had to start over again for the second time. It's discouraging when she can't get any better before being picked apart again. So not fair all that she has had to endure. I admire her for her strength and fight. She is a keeper.
Ruby is in pain tonight with this wrap on. She howls out with pain at times, moans long moans, she just is not comfortable at all. Breaks my heart to pieces. I hope I explained her somewhat good for you all and gave you a glimpse into her life. Thank you for taking the time to listen to what I wrote about my great dog Ruby.
WOW!!! WOW!!! As much as I've followed each of your blog posts, you really have done an EXCELLENT job of filling in all the extra details!
So, if Ive counted right, Rubynhas had roughly six surgeries I
Ipin avout two o ths, and Three of thise surgeries happened during the ampmsurgery and "recovery"! She is ONE TOUGH COOKIE indeed!!! And so are you!!
Inposted on your other thread tonight with some questions (Inkniw, seems like all I donis ask questions!) about her pain meds. She could be having phantom pain also. If your Vet gives you Gabapentin tomorrow, that ahould help. The compression bandaymis to help prevent bleeding, among other things.
I asked about her pain doses over there, so don't know if you've had a chance to respond.
IF lossivle, I would try and hold off fornyour afternoon appt and tak her to yiur regular Vet rather than back to the one who did the original amputation.
The Vet who took Ruby to the Vet who preformed the surgery so cheaply....did she know that Vet personally or anything about her certifications or skill level? Just curious.
Is yiur neice able to help with the expenses you've had to ha dle??? You've only had this zweet girl since May? WOW!! The MILLION DOLLAR DOG, right??
Thank you for taking the time to fill us in on Miss Ruby!! You are far stronger than you realizw to have dealt with all this intense pressure and stress!!!
Sonhowmoften are you giving her the tramadol? What amount? How much does she weigh?

She weighs 53 lbs I think at last weigh in. She is a little shepherd. Yes, I have only just had her a couple of months. My niece will start helping me to pay at least half of these expenses, it was we discussed. She is in the middle of a divorce though and can not contribute for another month or so.
I am waiting until 230 to see Dr. Fipp here in our hometown to removed the wrap today. The Vet who performed the amputation has been doing amputations for the past 30 years. She is in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She works at the Anderson hospital on Monday's as the Vet on staff at night. Let's see... Dr. F, Dr. B, Dr. T and Dr. S, those are who see her and Dr. T is the Specialist I could not afford that did Ruby's 2nd surgery for culture and biopsy, who didn't want to remove the leg right then until we got the news back that it should be removed.
I believe Ruby has had four/five surgeries now, it is hard to explain what happened without getting lost. The first two were kind of.... pointless, they were both the same surgery basically just different Vets. Then she went for amputation and now... restitching. During the amputation of that leg, she had to knock her out twice if I remember right... once to take the leg and another time to open the stump back up and make sure she was not bleeding internally, because she almost bled to death. Half of this entire time she spent in the hospital in Ft. Wayne.
I feel that these Vets pulled together with all their resources and accomplished obtaining this amputation for her and I'm grateful for that. If they hadn't she would not be here with us today. I really didn't expect any of this to happen and now that it has, we are knee deep into recovery. I feel like it has been a broken record and the same as when the cancer appeared... an anomaly. I have not been given the final bill for this procedure and everything that has went along with it... hospital stay, food, medicines, all the included costs that have gotten Ruby this far. I am scared of the bill, but we only talked about a set price associated with removing the leg. I think it was $750, I'm positive her bills exceed that amount.
The Vet is mailing me her medicine from her practice. She has gone above and beyond to help Ruby. We need the help! Ruby is full of determination. She is amazing!!! She does not prefer the little pen she has, she is pushing it around the living room when I am gone, or pushing thru it to get where she wants to be. I'm taking her to get the wrap removed in a few hours. I'm interested in seeing what it looks like now. Such a long bumpy road it has been. Hopefully this time I can keep Ruby from ripping the stitches out.
You are BOTH AMAZING!!!! 🙂 🙂 You have voth navigated this "long bumpy road" like Champs!!
I do believw Ruby has created her own little fan club with all these various Vets! We'll all continue to cheer for this strong-willed gal!
We'll be watching for your updatetoday. Make sure she has enough pain meds for the next two weeks. Check about the Gabapentin too.
Continuing to send hugs and healing energy!

You have shared so many good details about Ruby's journey. I didn't realize she was so new to your pack. So not only are you getting to know each other but going through this too? Wow! This will turn you both into a rock solid team (and the other doggies too).
But you forgot to mention her blog 🙂 Here's Ruby's blog everypawdy, it's a really nice one with lots of great photos and videos! See:
Ruby on three
I resized a few of your photos and noticed that you are uploading video directly to your blog. Videos take up a lot of storage space, and you will run out soon if you keep uploading directly. To get around that please start a YouTube Channel for Ruby. Uploading your movies to YouTube or another video sharing site is the best (and easiest) way to share movies on your blog or here in the forums. Once it's uploaded on YouTube, simply include the YouTube video display page url on a line by itself and the movie will automatically embed. If that is all greek to you, let me know and I can help you in a tutorial OK?
Meanwhile, have you applied for the Tripawds ASAP Fund? The Tripawds Foundation will reimburse up to $500 for the cost of amputation surgery, for people on limited incomes who qualify. Please apply today OK?

Thank you both!!! I have not applied yet for the $500 grant for the amputation expenses. I've been so overwhelmed with the situation that I haven't sat to write the essay yet. I keep speaking on these posts and blog which burns up that energy that I have for that. I will try to re-read the instructions again and complete that. I thought I would need to wait until they present me with that final bill for the amputation. I will look it over this evening and try to get it ready to submit at the 1st of next month. I think that is one of the stipulations. I just got home from Petsmart with the good foods for her. They had some freshpet on sale so I bought a couple small rolls of it and a collar for Baker so he won't be "naked" anymore. I was looking over the harnesses and such for future reference for Ruby to improve her quality of life in the future. I will look into putting her videos somewhere to post a link to them better also. thanks for the advice!!!
Isn't spoiling a tripawd the best fun?'! My dogs go bonkers over Fresh Pet!! I get them the refrigerator bag as apn extra goody topper sometimes. I think the roll is a little better price though, so I'll try that. GGood stuff!
Glad Baker got a collar so he won't go out nekked in public anymore!! 🙂
Be sure and keep.plenty of CHOCOLATE on hand for yourself!! It's a great stress reliever! 🙂

it really is the best fun! They absolutely LOVE freshpet. I really liked that complete meal bag of food, but I only bought that once as the price was way more. The tubes are interesting. It breaks up to be a lot of food for them, but doesn't smell the greatest. I have to cut it into little pieces and distribute between the four accordingly. It is also going to help me to manage their diets better. I hope. I still use dry kibble as well. I also get the Pedigree single serve foil packs to top their food with. Maybe not as good quality, but they love those also. This entire experience that I am going thru with Ruby has changed the whole pack for the better actually. Nakoma and Ruby are still learning how to love one another, but it is smoothing out. They have not always gotten along in the past.
One hour countdown for the wrap to be removed now!!! I'm going to get ready and write some questions out before I forget them! Update to come soon!
YAAAAAAAAAY!!!! WOOF!!! WOOF!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 YIPEE SKIPPEE 🙂 🙂 🙂
And wonderful that she's resting comfortably!! I know the whole ordeal today had to wear her out!!
Saw on your blog thst Dr Fipp is willing to take the stitches out so you won't have to make thst long drive to the other Vet. Even sounds like he would be a good "go to" Vet should you have any questions or need any help!! 🙂 🙂 So glad for you!!
I know you're exhausted too! Hopefully you and Ruby can get some good rest tonight. Keep her pain pills steady and must short, short potty breaks, okay?
You're doing such a good job!!! 🙂 🙂
Lots of hugs!!!!

I'm filling out the application for the ASAP grant. Well, writing the essay. I noticed that it says I need the bill for the amputation related cost and I have not been given the bill yes from that Vet. I don't see her for another two weeks. I know I have to wait until the 1st to apply. I just don't know if I will be able to submit it all in time for the deadline of 60 days post op. She is at day 30 right now. That is a bit stressful, but I will see what I can do. Maybe I will call and ask for a bill so I can apply for this. Ruby's care is continued though and that is probably why I have never received anything. If I don't get it soon, we will not fall in line with the time frame that we need in order to qualify.
I'm sure Rene will PM you and help you navigate through all this with solutions. So PLEASE DO NOT STRESS!!! You jave so much on your plate right now!!!
She'll see this and get in touch with you, okay? No worries.
Now, how is sweet Ruby doing? Did she eat her special yummy food yet?? 🙂
And have you jad your yummy CHOCOLATE yet? 🙂 🙂 🙂

That is a bit stressful...
Don't worry, the next Tripawds ASAP deadline is on the 15th of every month. You should be able to get the invoice emailed to you and that will suffice. Please feel free to contact the Tripawds Foundation with any questions.
thank you! I think I will have enough time to submit it most likely next month.
Ruby is doing well this morning. So much better that the wrap is off of her now. She sometimes shows pain, like panting or slight cry when moving off the couch, but it is getting better. She doesn't like to take her medicine much anymore, but I'm still able to get it in her. Really hoping the Vet mailed out the Clavamox and I will receive it today. She has two pills left right now and I'm sure she needs it for the next couple weeks. Her sutures look like they are almost doubled up. I will try to get a closer pic to show what I mean. Almost looks like a railroad track. No seepage. Just a little crusty around the staples which I will keep clean. I can not wait until these next two weeks pass and she can finally get those out. I didn't get any chocolate! I will try today to get some goodies. Yesterday took a lot out of me with taking Ruby and Baker to the Vet and running all around town getting stuff done. Today I am just resting with them and cleaning the house. All is going well!!!
Just take it easy today. And cleaning house is overrated!
Why don't you also email a photo of the stitches ro Dr Fipp AND the Vet who did the surgery? She especially should be able to comment on it. And in your email, ask about the Clavamox! Better yet, call and confirm! Dr Fipp can also put it together for you. That maybe the quicker route to take.
Sounds like Ruby is doing well considering.everything she has been through!
Yeah, when it comes to Tramadol itnis a very, cery bitter tasting pill and you have ro hide it really well in yummy food!!
Have a good day today! You deserve it!
Hugs
