I think Martin was born sometime in April 1999.  (I celebrate his birthday on Earth Day.)  I didn’t meet him until June 1999.  My boyfriend at the time, Marc, was taking a break from work, walking around a run down neighborhood in downtown Dallas, TX.  He saw a little, black, puppy sitting on an old couch someone had left at the curb with some trash.  Being the nice guy that he was, Marc scooped him & took him back to his office. He discovered that someone had put a white leather collar on the puppy, but had never bothered to change it or make it bigger.  The leather had started to be imbedded in Martin’s neck!  He was much better after having that cut off of him.  I still have it, he must’ve been just a tiny thing when they put that on him.

Marc tried to find someone to take Martin home from his office.  No luck.  So he took him home.  He then called me to come see the new puppy.  A puppy he still wanted to find a new home for.  I love dogs so I eagerly came over, but with no designs on taking him home.  I just wanted to play with a puppy!

I walked into Marc’s kitchen, where Martin was.  I knelt down, stuck out my hand, palm up.  Then this little puppy calmly walked over to me and put his forehead in my hand, so gently.  I was a goner.  That was my dog from then on.

In all the pictures from that time frame, Martin is just smiling away.  I still believe he knows that he was rescued and has never looked back.

So we spent the next 11, almost 12 years, happily together, inseparable, for the most part.

Then, one day in early March 2011, I found a lump on his left hind leg.  I thought it could be another lipoma since he has 2 of those on other parts of his body.  But… this one felt different.  It scared me.  I called my vet first thing on Monday, but she couldn’t see us until Friday.  I anxiously waited for Friday to come around.  When it did, she took some samples to look at it under a microscope but couldn’t tell what it was.  So we scheduled a biopsy for the next Friday.  But over the weekend it got bigger.  He was starting to limp, his hind legs gave out him a couple of times, and his appetite changed.  That really scared me.  Martin Loves To Eat.  I called my vet on Monday, she said she would come in on her day off, Tuesday, to do the biopsy.  She called later that day to tell me it was a tumor.  That’s when the first mention of amputation was brought up.  I cried & cried.

My vet then referred us to specialists, an oncologist and a surgeon.   The test results came back that it was a soft tissue sarcoma.  My vet and the oncologist recommended amputation as the best way to get rid of the cancer.  I reluctantly agreed.  I just couldn’t imagine how he could live a happy life with 3 legs, everything would be different for him.  But I didn’t want to imagine the alternative, living without him.

The surgery was scheduled for March 23, 2011.  Before then, I took video and pictures of him with four legs.  Knowing that he was going to be changed forever just shattered me.  But then I then started researching online and found Tripawds.com and downloaded their e-book.  It was so helpful & comforting to read what all of these other people had gone through with their beloved dogs.  I read and re-read, and looked for videos of hind leg amputees.

We had an appointment with the surgeon before the surgery, because she wanted to do a CT scan to make sure she would be getting all the cancer when she amputated.  She also wanted to discuss the bladder stones that were found on the x-ray.  Then the CT scan showed another mass, an anal gland carcinoma.  I was even more scared at this point.  She brought up the option of having all 3 surgeries done at once, as long as his body could handle being under anesthesia for that long. It would be more cost effective and better than having to have him put under again.  I decided yes, to do all 3.

With trepidation I dropped Martin off on surgery day.  Later that night I got the call that he was out of surgery & waking up.  Sigh of relief.  Then he had to stay in the hospital for 3 nights.  I was sad not to have him with me, but knew they could take better care of him at that time.  I picked up him on Sat morn.  The technicians and the surgeon told me how he had gotten up & moved around in his cage on the day after surgery.  They reassured me that he was going to do just fine.

Me on the other hand, I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to take care of him correctly.  There were so many meds to give him, hydrotherapy, & cream to be put on.

So it’s now the 13th day post op.  He’s getting better every day, they took his staples out yesterday.  He’s still having some problems with the rectal area, they actually had to go back in and reinforce some of the suturing.  So even longer to recover and to wear that horrible, plastic e-collar.  And he still has to stay trapped in my kitchen with bath mats and towels due to leakage.  But at least has the Cool Bed III, which I found on Tripawds.com.  It’s taken him awhile to get used to it, but he lies on it.  His appetite is great, and thank goodness for peanut butter.  Only way to get down some of those nasty pills.  I also bought Honest Kitchen Ice Pups, recommended on Tripawds.com.  It’s great, I make the broth and get him to drink more water.  Which he’s not as good at as he is at eating.

To end, (sorry this has been so long), but he’s walking better & further every day.  The little booger would walk further if I let him.

Thanks for reading our story.

wow, what a story!  welcome to the site.  gayle too had a soft tissue sarcoma, grade three.  she lost her right front leg february 17, 2010 and had five rounds of chemo (doxorubicin).  gayle is eleven and has never looked back.  she enjoys every moment of every day - just like martin will.  sounds like he has a few more challenges than some, but that just means he will be braver and will rise above quicker.  never doubt the strength and ability of a tripawd.  there is so much martin will teach you, really.  how about a few more pictures of the handsome lad?? again, it's nice to have you here and we look forward to the continuing adventures of martin.

charon & gayle

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Hi and welcome! My Dakota is 9 and lost his left front leg to a soft tissue cancer about 6 weeks ago. He is also a rescue (turned out on an Indian reservation) and was dying when we found him. Dakota is a royal pain in the behind sometimes, but he's my royal pain. He knows who found him, who saved him and who will never leave him. He's really a sweet dog (just incredibly pushy and needy).

You are in good company here with lots of rescue stories and a wide variety of reasons for amputation. Two recent members, Maddie Mae and Cocoa, were rescued after horrific injuries and kept by their rescuers--those bonds are very special when formed like that. You already know that, though.

So again, welcome!

Shari and Dakota (and Evelyn the monkeydog, the worst roommate ever)

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/

Hi Im glad Martin seems to have come through his surgeries ok and seems to be recovering well. It sounds like you have had plenty to be scared about and hopefully all will be smooth sailing now. It is a difficult decision to have the amputation done, but most of us have developed deeper bonds with our furkids since their surgeries. If you have any questions this is sure the  place to go for answers The folks here helped us so much when Cooper lost his leg last year. Welcome to the group! We are sending lots of healing thoughts Martins way!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your kind words.  It means a lot to me and I look forward to reading more of them.  As for pictures, I was kind of waiting for some of his fur to grow back in before I let anyone see.  But, thankfully, all of you know what a half shaven, new Tripawd looks like.  I don't know how to do it yet, but I'll try to get some pics posted.

Welcome Martin and Trina!  I'm so glad to hear Martin is doing well after his surgery.  If Martin ever gets tired of peanut butter, you may want to try braunschweiger.  That's a little tip I learned when my Max had his amputation way back in November 2008.  It's some kind of livery-meaty-patty thing, and DOGS LOVE IT!!  Good luck, keep us updated, and Yes, post some pics.

Hi Trina,

Thanks for posting Martin's story here- what a trooper!  That is a lot to go through, glad to hear he is healing up OK.

Instead of the cone of shame you might consider one of these options in the Gear Blog

As far as posting pictures- here is a link to the instructions.  The pics have to be hosted somewhere on line.

Sounds like you are finding your way around Tripawds just fine!!

Looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing more about Martin and his new three legged adventures.

Here are instructions for adding images to forum posts. If you don't share photos anywhere online, the easiest way may be to start a blog for Martin.

Thanks for joining and sharing his story, we're happy to hear you found our canine amputation e-book and Tripawds Gear helpful!

Not. As you can see we link relative keywords like Tripawds dog amputation help and advice community instead of saying "Tripawds.com"! big-blink

Welcome to the family. With so many mentions of Tripawds.com I think she just won the race in the Tripawds.com car!!! Don't worry about pictures and no hair, just part of the journey. Isn't it amazing how these guys can do just one little thing and melt your heart forever. Kudos for taking him in, sounds like your having a good recovery so far, at 13 days you should hopefully have the worst behind you. Don't be afraid to ask anything, experience gives the best answers. One piece of advice since your new, watch out for monkeydogs, they are pesky little varmits, basically 4 legged dogs that get jealous of all the attention the tripawds get and try to butt in, but don't worry, there is enough tripawds to keep slappin' em back to monkeycamp, hang around here and it won't take long to finds out what they are!!!!!!! Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
