On last Wednesday night, I let Chewy and his BFF out to play, we live 10 miles from the nearest neighbor and have over 35000 acres of wildlife refuge surrounding us so the boys have always been able to play freely and they never go further than yelling distance.  Neither came home that night, I panicked.  We spent that night and the next looking for both until the wee hours of the morning with no sign.  Friday evening as I was leaving work, I got a call, Chewy was home but injured.  We rushed him over an hour away to the emergency animal hospital for treatment.  Chewy had been gored by a wild boar, severe laceration to his front leg with a major break, the bone is broken totally in half.    We were given the options, put him to sleep, attempt a repair that won't allow him use of the leg and will cause pain for the rest of his life, ( he developed an infection in the leg while trying to get home), if the infection spreads then two weeks down the road he may require amputation anyway.  We opted to go with amputation to try and allow him a full life with as little pain as possible. Since it was the weekend, Chewy was sent home for the weekend with antibiotics and pain medication.  He went in this morning for his surgery.

Now the doubts of did we make the right decision for him? He's actually done well the last two days even with his front leg being useless. I couldn't even think about not having him around, this brave little guy was severely damaged and crawled for two days to get home. Our little hero deserves every chance.

We also found his buddy miles away, with a few minor scrapes.  From what we can put together the two of them came across a wild boar that they had a fight with, Chewy was injured and the two dogs headed home.  Coyotes were out that night and found the pair, Chewy's buddy took them on and led them away in pursuit of him.  Chewy was able to hide until it was safe to make his way home. His buddy was picked up by a kind man a short time later, the good Samaritan, is built like my husband and drives the same type of truck, so when he stopped to check on the dog who was dazed and confused, he climbed up in the back of the truck thinking his daddy had found him and he was going home. We were able to find him online as a found dog and bring him home.

We have learned so much from this, both dogs will now be micro chipped.  We will also add to our fencing to keep them contained and safe.

Waiting now to hear how surgery went. Hoping my little guy recovers quickly.

What a story, and what brave dogs to protect one another.  I am so glad they both got home!  Most dogs adapt really well to life on three, and Chewy is clearly a fighter.  The next two weeks will be had, but once the staples come out, about day 10 - 14, you will seem him start to act like himself again.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Holy smokes. Wild boars! All we have is bears and cougars. For some reason I think wild boars are worse. I'm so glad the dogs are home and safe.

Chewy will do great on three legs. It'll take some time for the healing and for him to adjust.

I look forward to photos of both dogs.

Hugs to you and Chewy and his buddy.

Wow!! What a story!! Are you in the US? Where do you have wild boars and coyotes?

The first two weeks may get hard, but Chewy is obviously one heck of a fighter and all of you will get through this!! If you run into trouble, have questions, whatever, feel free to post here. We'll do what we can to help.

And yes, as Kerren said, photos please!! 🙂

To a speedy recovery

Wild boars are all over the US in rural areas, and the coyotes thrive even in the cities.  Wild boar are vicious - my ex used to hunt them.  Every hunter in a group carried both his hunting rifle and a sidearm because the boar are fast and so dangerous.  And huge.  Chewy and his buddy had to have really worked together to survive the encounter.

What an amazing story of survival!!!

We have coyotes around here. You can hear them yelping and howling most any night. I've relatives who have had significant injuries to their large dogs from them. I also heard of a great dane, not far from down the road, taken down by coyotes.

I'm so glad to hear Chewy is on the mend. And thank goD he had his BFF to watch out for him. Would love to hear more about your sweeties!

And picutres!

Whooooaaah. That's crazy! I'm so glad the dogs are on the mend, they are incredibly lucky!

We've encountered many boars, coyotes and even peccaries in our travels. They are pretty nasty beasts when it comes to being around other animals. Wyatt Ray is on constant patrol for them.
